I can't say that I, or anyone I know, ever believed that Bush did 9/11 or Reagan created/spread HIV/AIDS.

I also used to be a conservative. The wakeup call for me was when everyone on talk radio was talking about Obama's "Civilian National Security Force", as if there was going to be martial law and troops marching down the street.
