WE MAKIN IT OUT OF THE DUNGEONS WITH THIS ONE 🔥 🔥 🔥
I'm so grateful for Richard Dawson's music. The last few minutes of this, the "When the sun is" section, is truly magical. It's like a stolen chorus from an eighteenth century ballad opera -- overheard by a travelling Suomi hurdy gurdy player through the walls of Drury Lane theatre in the 1740s who, when he got back to Lapland as an old man, taught what he remembered of the song to the tribal women, who then passed it down through the generations until at last the tribe faded into the tundra like a memory. While the last shaman lay dying on the shores of lake Orivesi, he visited Richard Dawson in a dream in the form of a herd of magical reindeer that taught him the chord changes. And here we are.
I love that. If it's genuinely yours (Sorry for being innately cynical, but we are where we are), thank you.
it's that but it's also The Moody Blues. It's magnificent
How beautifully described, you have blessed the song with a timeless touch
If you like that "Sun" section you'll probably like Polyphonic Spree. They don't have the awesome rough, raw edges that this has, but the melody lines are akin.
1st Listen > Me: Wtf is this?
2nd Listen > Me: Okay, this is different. Pretty creative freak folk.
3rd Listen > Me: IN THE KIIIIIINGDOM OF BRYNEICH!!!
So true :)
Same
At 5:05, when the chorus shifts from "climbing" to "dying" - it gets my skin crawling. You can hear the emphasis in their voices of being excited, frightened, captivated, by what is about to happen.
Holy Christ this is so amazing. Can't forgive myself not discovering this great man before. Feels like I've been given the best christmas present ever.
Happy Christmas!
this is genuinely one of the best songs i’ve ever heard, the outro is magnificent. goosebumps
One of the best albums I've ever heard.
The majority of contemporary bands: “Look how retro and distinctive we are with our 90’s/80’s get up.”
Richard Dawson: “Hold my Brythonic flagon...”
Aye
As some people once said 'Bringing retro to it's logical conclusion'.
@@krazimac209and then comes the Ancient Sumer revival
One song he is The Hangmans Beautiful Daughter album by Incredible String Band, the next he is Neutral Milk Hotel had Jeff Magnum kept raging another decade. Thank you for being unhinged and inspired, and not prog. Amazing lyrics, here:
In the kingdom of Bryneich
Verging on a muddy crook of Coquet
A dice of houses cast with clay and sheepdung
Through a soup of starlit peatsmoke
Gradually emerges as we descend
"Bring the goose my child!"
I carve a notch into the squirming post
It smells like a smithy
"Hurry now and drink the bowl before it congeals"
There comes frightful news from town
Of great evil abound
The heartbroken potter's idiot boy was snatched from the speltfield
Scouring a fortnight in the hills
All they found, pointing from a sett, a small grey hand
"Tie the goats to my cot
With tansy rags their faces cover
Push straws into the windows
Damp the coals, and bar the door with hornbeam limb"
Blinding colours leap
Along bemirrored tower walls
Stretching as far as the eye can see
I am woke in icy beads
By a clamour coming from the broadbeans
The snapping of stems and a foul-smelling bloom
Paralysed I watch my child's breath
Glide like a jellyfish across the black morning
When the sun is climbing
We'll find the harrow smothered in slime
When the sun is climbing
We'll put it in the dog's noses
When the sun is climbing
We'll break upon the heath
When the sun is climbing
We'll dash across the Ringing Meadow
When the sun is climbing
We'll weather a storm of living needles
When the sun is climbing
We'll tarry by the Pool of Plenty
When the sun is climbing
We'll hurry down the Valley of Eagles
When the sun is climbing
We'll hear the distance of the North Sea
When the sun is dying
We'll cross the Causeway of No Memory
When the sun is dying
Our trees will billow in dunes
When the sun is dying
We'll wade around the shoreline
When the sun is dying
The algae as a nap of fire
When the sun is dying
Below the surface of the water
When the sun is dying
In the face of the cliff a ghastly doorway
When the sun is dying
We'll pitch a tent of pigskin on the beach
When the sun is dying
The ebbing tide will soon reveal it's secrets
Yes this guy is very much Neutral Milk Hotel mixed with Incredible String Band, with a zest of Comus to boot, perhaps a sprinkling of Spirogyra.
Incredible string band I definitely got that.
This is the music the villagers play before they burn you in the wicker man.
Seriously though I love it
I read a comment that Richard said
“This song is about when a people or a country scapegoat and look for fantastical solutions to problems which of course are caused by their own. For instance, in the song [the scapegoat is] an ogre, but it could be, for example, refugees or immigrants or something like that.”
Not the beeeess!!!
The shivers you get listening yet another time to a song you've just discovered... My God...
COME TO DADDY
Say what?
these chord changes are really interesting,, and such cool voice leading
One day, I hope the world will see his genius.
Would love a kareoki version. Imagine that in the pub. Amazing
Ogre is one of the very best english neofolk songs of all time. One surface reading is it's the story of a man (probably a blacksmith) who murders a boy to use their blood in a magickal ritual to save his ill child, the spell doesn't work, and the villagers are set on revenge and finding his hiding place
I love when I hear a song like this for the first time. The melodic structure and orchestration blows my mind. I'm sure neurons are firing and my brain has just grown another fold or two just for having listened.
I think I'm addicted to this.
The closest thing already in existence would be Comus, but comparisons don't do this man justice. He's a true original. And this is striking work, it really is. It resonates with my gut in a way that's hard to describe, as well as turning my braincells into fireworks. Long may he continue.
This isn't just a song. There's something uncanny, almost primal, in it.
I started with Henki and then went to Peasant and then after 10s of full album listens I jumped to 2020 and I absolutely love them all! Now I’m starting to dabble in older stuff like nothing important….. the man seems to get better with age and I am super looking forward to whatever comes next! Another collaboration with someone would be cool!

this entire track is magnificent
This is an amazing song and everytime I hear it it brings a tear to my eye in the last bit of it. the melodies and composition is just so great
This song is like an onion - it has layers.
(Seriously though it's good)
...and makes me weep. It's amazing
it's so good!
shruk
Funny remark as that's what they said about the Incredible String Band, which is sort of in the same 'area/genre'. As an example: ua-cam.com/video/vdtnMzPWqIs/v-deo.html
Carol Ann Duffy esq. Love this song/vid.
The last few minutes of this might be the best pop moment I've heard all year
Raining Outside This ain't pop but now I really wanna hear a good pop cover of this song with a grand kanye level production.
This bloke is my latest obsession. He's like the love child of Incredible String Band and Alasdair Roberts who is writing a new soundtrack to the original Wicker Man. Incredible.
Did anything come of that Alasdair Roberts soundtrack?
Thank you for writing this comment :)
My bloody god you're great, personifies everything I love about creating wonderful sound.
The only comparison I can think of is with Comus, and their extraordinary album "First Utterance". But even with that singular reference, this (song and parent album) is gloriously unique. Its shabbiness is its beauty, and Dawson is a startling genius.
I hear some Cardiacs as well.
The greatest harmonies
Playing the Witcher 3 for the first time recently so I’m pretty into this
I know that music is subjective.
BUT SERIOUSLY. What monster would dislike this.
me tbh
an ogre.
Jet From Gladiators I love the song, but it is so tonally bizarre I totally understand, in fact I would have expected, that most people would hate this. I personally love its quirkiness, its atonal short moments, its unpredictable resolutions etc.
Believe me. There are people...
I was one of them but it was an accident :( I finally fixed it now though
What a perfectly crafted song. Richard's voice is gorgeous here. Best one on the album.
Richard Dawson has the most trustworthy face
The way he's grinning while he sings at 3:30
Richard Dawson is THE REAL FUCKING DEAL
Jesus wept, this is wonderful. Thanks to my fellow residents of the pond for bringing this to my attention.
G'day pondie
@@zombryn Alright, fellow pondie. Hope your day has been most worthy of laudation.
@@jimfitzgerald8639 That's the way we all go!
How do you make such a vivid portrait of a setting in time man this shit is beautiful.
New to this guy. Love it. Stunning.
This is every Ben Wheatley film in song form
Richard. I am very happy to hear this. It's majestic. Thank you
I keep coming back. Nothing comes close for ages…
MY ONLY CRITICISM IS HOW WELL GROOMED THE BEARDS ARE
no need to shout.
I HEARD YOU MAKE VERY NICE GUITARS, NIGEL. SLEEP WELL.
AYE, THA CANNY TA.
I cant stop looking at their beards now
TOLD YOU, MATE.
I think this song took my maidenhood.
This sounds modern yet a thousand years old at the same time
Watching on repeat. Magic.

He is one of the greats, oh so rough and oh so tender.
SHOUT OUT TO DAWN.
Oddly mesmerising video, and a great song!!!
Over and over I return for a taste of those days watching Richard in a half full living room. Still as majestic
Love you Richard. Can't wait to see you in June
Such a fantastic song, I keep coming back month after month
Don't know how I feel about Dawson as a whole still, but this song is a,kind of unflinching, abrasive masterpiece.
It eschews traditional views of the times in which it places itself to focus solely on tradition, reality and emotional truths.
LOVE!
someBODY once told me this album is fucking great!
Donky
expert level D&D music
post-shrekcore
This is so beautiful
My second favorite song of all time.
whats your first?
Drackaris Emily by Joanna Newsom
Bucky Dent great taste sir
I can’t find that song
jesus what is going on in the arrangement to this song holy shit
Beautiful. A little reminicent of Canterbury / Robert Wyatt with some Wickerman. Really really good.
This is bloody amazing
I have not even tried to compare this to any other group/ singer whatever . Mesmerising!!! 20/20 is also a work of sheer bliss!
How I can’t explain this man to my pals; “Smash the genius of John Frusciante, Pavement hooks and my neighbor (who cuts his own wood with a hand axe for heat) together at a ren fair.”
You just have to experience him. Wonderful.
This is more like Tunng, Elephant 6, and Everything Everything's first record met at a ren fair.
Still listening... thank you.
Richards voice is incredible. He sounds a lot like Peter Gabriel at the end. Amazing song.
chris pease Sounds nothing like Peter Gabriel, this guys singing is so flat it's a joke.
Incredible string band, influenced. Wild.
Album of the year 2017. No question.
I mean, you may have questions. But not me.
Awesome!!
This is as mad as a bag of cats! I love it!
Very cool.
CLASS MAN - PROPER CLASS X
Amazing, thank you richard.
Love the song, love the video, love Dawson. My new hero.
BOOM ........hairs tingle ........magnificent work
i get called weird for listening to this but it’s so beautiful i do not care
Reminds me of Robert Wyatt's "Shipbuilding" somehow
Yes I've been thinking of Wyatt as well while listening to it
wonderful song...
I love how that outro just kind of comes out of nowhere and blows you away
Not from nowhere. If you listen to the bridge just before, it gives a hint but its all the chord progression changes from minor to major. Karma Police by Radiohead does a similar thing
Underrated af
I love this one.
Oooh, it goes all 'Polyphonic Spree' @ 4:00 !
Yeah. Much better though. Sounds a cult hit, or a cult making a hit
sparkly
That was awesome
this guy managed to make medieval music sound cool
These are my people.
Meant to search Richard Dawkins... I ain't even mad though
You got lucky haha 😝
Dick Dorkins aint here.
What a smelly guy
I feel uneasy listening to this.
You make me glad to be a fairy
when the sun be vibin
Amazing.
Thank you RTRFM for always exposing me to far out music!
I want to hear more music like this.
so sick
Man, I wanna know what this song is depicting.
Richard said elsewhere....
“This song is about when a people or a country scapegoat and look for fantastical solutions to problems which of course are caused by their own. For instance, in the song [the scapegoat is] an ogre, but it could be, for example, refugees or immigrants or something like that.”
I'm still fuckin' watchin' this video.
Now I'm dancing to it in a friend's living room whilst house sitting.
Loving it......
My god. This is great.
Perfect
Absolutely gorgeous. Another astounding track, well done x
Watched on repeat for 3 hours
I feel like Richard has really bad coffee breath when he sings.
He actually has nice breath
I can't unsmell this now
Lmao I bet he likes his coffee 😋☕️
This is a great song!
He would make a great Henry Vlll.
canturgan
True ! Haha
