What was the early faith of Ashoka? Ever thought about it? Have you carefully observed and analysed the inscriptions written by King Ashok? Where he has promoted Dharm across his kingdom. He mentioned about Ahinsa and Jeev Daya principles, which are primarily closer to Sraman Jaina Dharm. Not Boudh Dharm. But sadly, wrongful interpretations lead to neglect of the Jaina association with Ashoka. In later years he again picked up, on his Jain connection and became Dharmic. Certainly, he did promoted Boudh Dharm in a big way, during his mid life.
@@akashjain1201 I agree, the contribution and impact of Jain Dharma have been underestimated and not recorded properly in the mainstream and popular discourse. But there is no denying the fact that Ashoka was one of the greatest Buddhist Kings who not only shaped the philosophical geography of India but entire Asia. His impact is still visible across different parts of the world, but sadly he was forgotten and ignored in Indian history, till the evidence of Ashoka's contribution became so loud that it could not be further ignored. Sadly many other Buddhist kings and the overall contribution of Buddhism in Indian civilisation has not yet received the significance and mentions it deserves. It still gets marginal mentions in the history of the subcontinent.
@@BodhisattvaTravels Kings and Queens were never Sarvagya or people with absolute knowledge. They always switched among various prevailing faiths of their ruling period. Which is normal behaviour in a dharmic society. Before advent of Islam & Christianity. Only select Dharm & Dashanic faiths existed across Bharat. Like Sraman & Ved. Basically they were different approaches to reach the final truth. But not every ruler and sage believed in Anekantvaad. Dharm is often unique and exclusive. Later we also developed hate and mistrust over contrary school of thoughts. Hate became stronger than practice of real Dharm. Resulting in persecution and killings, suppression and dominance. Some might even say today, that Jain & Boudh Dharm came from an alien land.

This group sounds like one of the modern religious cult followings around various gurus in different parts of the world rather than a longstanding religion. It doesn't seem to have had much of a following. These disappear after the death of the founder. By the way Buddhism also died out in India, and would have disappeared from history if it were not for monks who had traveled to other countries keeping it alive. Religions are dependent on patronage from rulers for survival - or rather it was in those times.
It still does, to be honest. Rulers or the state being patrons of religion is why various current religions still exist. This also extends to say influential people like billionaires and businesses funding these religious groups. Once these dissapear, the people of those religions will either die out or become a tiny minority before it finally disappears. This is why any religious group that instinctively chooses to stay away from political power is only a few generations away from extinction and irrelevance
Most religions starts out as a small sect following a Guru, founder, etc, etc. Just 0,0001 % become actual religions. Often because they have a charismatic follower taking up the banner when the original founder dies. This turned modern sects as Mormons and Jehova witnesses into accepted religions/ denominations.

Fascinating. I studied comparative religion for a year and a half at my Norwegian university, but I never heard of the Ajivika or that 62 religions were introduced in 6th century BCE India. Please make more videos about the 6th century.
The famous" Brahmajala sutta" ( Discourse on Web of beliefs) by The Buddha was in response to the 62 beliefs present at the time He became a Fully Enlightened Being. ( There is a very good English translation by Bhikku Bodhi, renowned American Buddhist monk.)
Jains are atheists as they reject Ved whereas Buddh follower don't reject Ved and are not atheists.though both are Brahmic .2.Jain path most impractical of any sects whereas Buddh followers are Monists. But history is perhaps dirtiest trick to malign a faith.
Most of the 62 religions/beliefs got absorbed into umbrella term called Hinduism. Actually religion like abrahamic one is very foreign to Indian sub continent. People of different philosophical and beliefs did debate and sometimes had clashes but more or less considered all paths to lead to similar realisation. That's why for most part they lived in peace.
With everyone talking about resets , “ end times”, and upsets in organized religion, what kind of greatness do Indian people possess to have maintained a religion thousands and thousands of years old?
In Abrahamic religions, there are linear concepts with a single afterlife. In Indian religions, everything is in a perfectly balanced, constant, eternal, cyclical system. The most crude but easy way to visualise it would be to see the graph of a sine wave over time. There are no sharp changes, only constant changes according to a set formula. Everything is the same, but encompasses all the variety you see in human society. Note that events like the dinosaur killing asteroid strike (KT extinction) are not accounted for. But what is accounted for is endless universes, countless worlds, innumerable afterlifes, different states of existence, levels of being, consciousness being independent of bodily functions, and so on. Abrahamic religions are very strongly based in what can be materially observed. Indic religions are extremely theoretical, sound like highly developed fiction, but the amount of truth that is embedded and woven into this rich mixed fact-theory complex, forces you to think about the parts that seem imaginary - commonplace rebirth, consciousness after death, karma spanning multiple lives, and so on. Indic religions also accord extreme complexity to God, acknowledging that creation is supremely complex and its purposes are often beyond obvious reasoning, e.g. "blessing in disguise", actual purpose versus apparent purpose, etc. In short, it's the difference in vision between a simple straight line versus a finely engineered sine wave. There's no real greatness to Indian people as such. We're just as stupid or intelligent as any other people.
Both budda and ajivikas were influenced by Nirgranthas i e early Jain's. Jain's are most underrated tradition yet they are still so dominating. But it need courage to accept that.

I only recently learnt about the Ajivikas quite recently, and wrote a blog on how close their philosophy resonates with our latest understanding of Physics. Fatalistic determinism is quite hard to absorb, even in our day and age, and I could only imagine how scary a prospect it must have presented back in those days. No wonder they got persecuted and driven to extinction, but its a sad loss, as their liberal philosophy of not associating bodily needs with sin, was so far ahead of their times.

Why are the Buddhist and Jain writings about this religion so harsh? It is excruciatingly painful to think that we don't have free will. Even today, the most learned Hindu saints, who seem to have at least heard of this school of philosophy, only try to merge it back in to the Karmic school, trying to establish a middle path, rather than accept it in its raw form.

Lol that's what I thought...

Ajivakas are mentioned in many places of the buddhists suttas( discourses)

Some people are talking about killing of Ajivikas by king Ashoka without proper knowledge. For them:: There was not any talk of killing of Ajivikas but Jains both times(Nigranth Nathaputra) in sanskrit text Ashokavadana, for sketching picture of the Buddha touching feets of Mahavira. They have just become ignorate believing a myth story associated with supernatural beings like Nagas and Yakkas. In Mauryan era, there was not yet the tradition of worshiping or depiction of the Buddha or Mahavira both, they were worshiped in symbols. How can a story associated with myth figures n irrelevant historials chronology accepted as historical event??? I know most have never read that story, just read in WhatsApp university syllabus.
If you look at edicts of King Ashoka, he patronized all sages of all religions and full of tolerance and respect to all religions, he believed the households of religions should stay together, households of all religions should get knowledge of doctrines of other religion. This exchange of ideas would lead to flourish of core ideas of religions. A man with such fantastic ideas could give order to kill any non Buddhist. No...
This is just fiction story of Buddhist sanskrit canon. How can a book in written down after hundreds of years of the historical morachy and in unknown language (sanskrit was not existed Mauryan era)be historically reliable? NO...
Furthermore, Ashoka's descendant who succeded his throne after his rule were believed in Jainism n Ajivikism both. If he ordered to kill Jains n Ajivikas, how could his descendant believed in Jainism n Ajivikism? This proves these are false allegations.

Whereas ajivikas were atheists of some sort
Could you also do a video on who Gautam Buddha’s guru was? Thick Nath Hanh has mentioned it in one of his books.
First of all, gautama Buddha had no guru but siddhartha gautama had.
The first teacher of Siddhartha gautama was Arada Kalama. His second teacher was Uddaka Rāmaputta. Siddhartha reached the highest level of those sects yet something was missing for him. He felt like he hadn't found what he was looking for. Then he left and practiced extreme asceticism with five other ascetics. He took it so seriously for 6 years. He got nothing but skin and bones. Finally he figured out the truth path lies between intensive pleasure (29 years prince's life) and extreme deprivation (6 years of extreme asceticism). The middle path that led him to Buddhahood.
There is no teacher for samyak SamBuddha.
