I really don't comment on videos that much but i just have to tell you something. YOUR VIDEOS ARE SOOOOOO AMAZING AND INFORMATIVE!!!! i literally just found your channel like an hour ago and i am COMPLETELY IN LOVE WITH ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS AND ALL THE WONDERFUL DETAILS. You can truly tell when someone takes their profession seriously, and i see that in you. You are an AMAZING dancer but aside from that you are truly beautiful and you radiate confidence and beauty. I really felt the need to tell you this and that you have inspired me so much just in the past hour! I wish you the best in your career with dancing and youtube. I can't express this enough but you, VERY AND TRULY RADIATE BEAUTY AND CONFIDENCE. Thank you so much for all the work you put into your videos!! I love you so much!!!

I don't usually ever leave comments on youtube videos but I just had to drop a line, say hello and say what a wonderful, graceful and inspirational person you are. Gorgeous dancing aside, you radiate beauty from the inside out and I'm so excited to see someone like you inspire lots of other dancers out there. Wishing you continued success in your dancing (and video) career!

I just sprained my (already mid recovery)ankle during a performance, danced through it finished the show. But now I’m in a boot and I feel so discouraged feeling unstable, my range of motion isn’t nearly where even a normal persons range is. And it’s hard knowing getting back to the basics will be a struggle. My pt has never worked with dancers but told me I probably won’t be taking class for another 2 months. It’s heartbreaking but i love you’re positive energy and I’m looking forward to working my way back to class

I would love an easy bar. Beeing someone who just does ballet for fun, I sometimes find it really useful to go back to the basics to work on them, as I feel it helps me getting better with the more complicated stuff as well. So an easy bar would be appreciated.

Thank you for this video. I am dealing with tendinitis in my foot and I was recovering nicely and had just started your 12 week programme...and then I managed to hurt some muscles in my back yesterday (not serious; mostly just muscle spasms, but PT can only see me in a few days). It's very frustrating because I was enjoying the 12 week programme. Just trying to be patient and let myself heal.

Such a wonderful video! I'm completely behind you on "mindfulness". I think being in the moment also keeps you focused on what you are doing My adviser says it this way: "when you are doing the dishes, Do The Dishes". as if it's the most important thing. There isn't any such thing as multi-tasking, only doing 2 or 3 things badly.
Don't worry about the same background. Newscasters sit in front of the same background all the time. You're doing wonderful videos! Keep it up!

Awesome video with great tips! Could you possibly do a video on specific things that dancers need to do to keep their bodies healthy and not incredibly sore all the time(other than the stuff you mentioned in this video like eating right, getting enough sleep, etc.)? It would be especially helpful to know what are good things to do before/after class to help prepare/cool down your body and ways to help recover from general soreness and pain!

Oh yes! I've been waiting for this video for a while now, I'm so glad that you've made it! I'm such a klutz sometimes and I often injure my self alot- in ballet or just in any sport. Recently I really strained my hip, but it wasn't the bone, but instead the tissue that i damaged. The doctor said it wasn't serious but it's been a month and it still hurts so much! I can't even do the splits any more because there's just too much pain! gosh talk about developes!!! but i'm going to the doctor tomorrow and hopefully it isn't anything serious because i'm going to ballet summer school in a month :/

I just broke my ankle and needed surgery for it earlier this month. Unfortunately, this year was the year my teacher told me that I could start competing with the dance team so I was scared that I wouldn't be able to compete since our first competition was in March but luckily, my doctor said that I would be back to dance by February and my teacher said that I could still compete!

I partially tore a ligament and completely tore another ligament, partially tore my peroneal tendon, and had a stress fracture in my 5th metatarsal about 5 months ago. The doctor said I didn't need surgery. I was in a boot for about 2 months and then I did 6 weeks of physical therapy. I'm just now starting to go back to dance, and I'm literally taking classes with 10 year olds to get back slowly but my foot started hurting again. I have been following everything the doctor has told me, but there has been a little bit of swelling around the ligament I completely tore and a little bit of bruising along the peroneal tendon. I don't know what to do...

thanks for this video, Kathryn! it is really helpfull and inspiring!
I just had a sprain on my right ankle 3 days ago, during allegro jumps... not so serious, but I try to stay the most calm I can, try to not walk, and will wait few weeks before going back to ballet class.
A friend of mine told me she was not so surprised it happened because I do not have a correct position of hips/knee/ankle/foot in plié. I know that the foot and knee have to stay in the same line when you do a plié... but she told me "it is not so much about alignment, it is more about the position of the weight of your body". Do you have a specific advice to help me to improve that?
many thanks for everything you do on youtube :)

I had a pulled intercoastal muscle last year and finally came back stronger to do my ballet workouts. Ughhh dance injuries DX
I hurt my knee last week during ballet and had to wear a knee support during dance on Saturday which just hurt it more and then when I was stretching on Sunday it just got worse and I could barely walk as it clicked strangely and it is hard to straighten it.
It started easing a bit after a hot bath yesterday afternoon and now it isn't as bad but I'm worried dance today will hurt it.
I've always been prone to ankle injuries but since an accident two or three years ago in which I sprained my knee when it hit the bottom of a swimming pool on holiday my knee has been another common area for injuries. I know it would probably be best to not dance or take it easier but I hate missing dance and missing one lesson is bad enough never mind a week.

Easy Barre please please please! I have arthritis in my toe (and excess fluid, and a bone spur, and a semi hollow bone, making chances of surgery helping very slim) I was out for a month in a boot last October, danced 6 months and couldn't tell how much I was compensating until I ended up with stress fractures in both feet. Back intothe boutfor anothermonth. So, the fractures healed (I think) now but I'm choosing to be out all summer to prevent rebreaking.

This past summer I broke my right foot after falling in ballet class. Fast forward two months and I am back in dance getting back into the routine. Then a few weeks later I begin to feel pain in the same foot, and the doctor says my bone is so inflamed that I need to stop dancing for a couple weeks. After being in a boot for the second time, I mess up my hip and knee from being so lopsided for so long. A couple months later with PT, when I am finally back in ballet ready to begin pointe again, I break my OTHER foot, (the left one) while walking and rolling on my ankle. Very frustrating cause this is my third time this year in a boot and going to PT. doctors are currently testing my bone density:/

Oh man. When we lay down the dance floor in my tech theatre class and tape it with gaff we're always making sure we keep the panels a certain distance from each other. That's so the dancers don't injure themselves by getting their toes/nails caught in the cracks. :(

Have you ever had tendonitis on one foot because of pointe? aside from everything the doctor says, rest, anti inflammatiory, stretching, and staying off pointe, how do you strengthen your calfs and arch without aggravating it? It takes a long time to recover from tendonitis and some people just dance on sore tendons.

I have had a chronic injury for 4 years in my adductor gracilis, I think it's because I always stretched before class, and must have stretched cold. Then I managed to stretch through the pain, but then after 1 week of not dancing/stretching it would get so tight all over again :( I am now going to go back to ballet after 1 year, and it is super super tight again, my orthopedist told me that there is no chance of it tearing and that it is mostly mental, and I need to stretch through the pain. But I am so so afraid of it tearing, and I'm afraid to go to class with no turnout because I can't stretch it before class when I'm not warm:'( Please do you have any suggestions for this? Where regular running warmups don't work because you need to use the actual turn out muscles?

I've been having trouble with my left side of my hip. It's not painful, it just feels stuck and even to stretch it or turn it out, it's just so incredibly hard to get warm and turned out. I was "professional" for about 2 years but life happened. But now trying to get back into ballet, I've noticed this problem with my hip. My right side is normal. Was wondering if you suggest a chiropractor or a physical therapist? I'm thinking most of my hip issues might be a spine issue because my left upper back and neck is always rock hard too. 😞 Thanks for any advice!

    Hi Katie,
So it was the last 5 minutes of pointe class after 3 hours of ballet and we were doing an des dan turns (sorry if I spelt that wrong) for the first time and I did fine the first 3 times but then to the left I finished the turn by rolling on my ankle. It didn't hurt, and I didn't hear any snapping or cracking. But I went to point my foot after and couldn't because of pain so I stopped dancing and iced it. I didn't end up going to the doctor because my foot didn't swell and it's about two week later now. I've just been doing arms, and I just started up class again, because it's a lot better and I can now point my foot without pain. I cannot wing my foot fully though. I do barre and some center but no jumping or turns. I am hoping to get better soon because of auditions coming up for summer programs.. Any advice?

I have sprained my ankle three times in the past year, and broken my cuboid (bone in the side of the foot)! I’m supposed to have a Broström ankle surgery as soon as my vitamin levels are normal. Does anyone have any experience with the recovery of this surgery and the prognosis for returning to dance? My main concern is I was so close to pointe work before my injuries. If I’m having surgery, will I ever be able to continue to improve in dance like it never happened?

I've been injured more by ballet than anything else--excepting bicycling. I sprained my ankle (repeatedly), bruised my foot, shattered my toenails, etc.And many of you "consistent full-time danseurs and danseuses" are thinking, "You call that a history of injuries? That's laughable! You've barely even had a paper-cut! And... maybe you're right. Maybe I do need to need to push myself to get busted up a little bit more. It's simple, Simon. See.... it ain't a sport unless there's a chance you can get really, really hurt.

Strength training very very slowly. After you injure yourself the first time maintaining the function is much harder.
(Not a professional dancer but too used to injuries.)

I learnt the hard way by ignoring the pain until it got unbearable. Currently not dancing and that's no fun :-(

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die".
BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again".
And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, or struggling or doubtful, simply be honest and tell Him that. He is not intimidated by ANY sin or struggle you are facing. ANY. He hears and will answer. If we pray for Him to come in, regardless of the condition, then He will.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER.
If you have any questions let me know
    X
