I am Japanese. Thomas Lockley makes me angry, and many other Japanese people are also angry. We believe that we have the right to defend our history and culture. We don't have any problem with Yasuke being a black person or Yasuke being in the game; this is not about race. We are angry because Thomas Lockley and Ubisoft have been trying to change our history. By the way, Thomas Lockley is NOT an associate professor of history or even law. He is an assistant professor who specializes in language. He is an associate professor of English teaching law students English.
There is so little record of Yasuke and no concrete evidence that Yasuke was a heroic, legendary samurai. Some people claim that Yasuke was a samurai since he was given a place to live, a stipend, and a sword (a short sword more like a dagger). However, there is only one version of "Shincho Koki" (Nobunaga Chronicle), known as "Shincho Koki Sonkeikaku bon", that contains the information that Yasuke was given a place to live, a stipend, and a short sword. Since it is the only version of Shincho Koki that contains this information, experts such as Yūichi Goza (a Japanese historian) suggest that the information about Yasuke might have been added on and needs to be considered carefully because of the uncertainty of authenticity.
Because Yasuke was a foreigner who served Oda Nobunaga for only 15 months, it would have been impossible for him to be a high-ranking samurai, the way people in the West think of him. If Yasuke were a samurai, he would have been a low-ranking one, not a legendary and heroic one. For someone to be a high-ranking samurai, he must have a last name, and Yasuke didn't have a last name.
The idea of samurai in the West significantly differs from the definition of samurai in Japan. In the Azuchimomoyama era, when Oda Nobunaga was a daimyo, samurai were not the only ones given a home, money, and swords. There is a record of farmers, merchants, and even sumo wrestlers being given a home, money, and swords as rewards by Oda Nobunaga. It was quite common for farmers to possess swords in the Sengoku period since many of them were recruited as "ashigaru" to fight in battles until Toyotomi Hideyoshi's sword-hunting order in 1588. Asgugaru were foot soldiers allowed to carry and use swords, but that did not make them samurai.

Recently, the Sekigahara Gun Corps, which suffered copyright infringement from UBI, received a response from UBI. The content of the response was that since the materials had already been printed, they would not make any corrections. It seems they will push forward with sales, finding it too troublesome to remove the parts infringing copyright, without offering an apology for the infringement. According to UBI's reasoning, if their characters were already printed and infringed upon, they wouldn't be able to criticize it. It seems UBI is declaring their own works copyright-free. LOL

Considering Japanese folks were able to find out that the contents of Lockley's books are being taught and referenced in actual school books, It'd say it's historical revisionism. It's not a concerted effort or some huge villainous plan. But rather multiple waves, layers, and types of slowly trying to revise history going on behind the scenes for a long time now. Their cumulative result was ACS. And so when people dug up the corpse, the rot was deeper than everybody thought it would be. It's like how one lie, when spread out by multiple mouths eventually becomes truth several generations later.

I'll point this out. There is no evidence that Yasuke was a samurai. He did serve Oda Nobunaga, had a house, et cetera. However, that is not unusual for valued servants. William Adams (who was the inspiration for John Blackthorne in James Clavell's Shogun) was a retainer for Tokugawa Ieyasu for several years before he was given the honor of being a samurai.
Which goes to a different point. Japan was very meticulous about its records in this time. They had detailed records to make sure people where who they claimed to be. For example, there is a record that William Adams and his shipmate Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn were made a samurai and there is a record of that happening. There is no record of Yasuke becoming a samurai.
Lastly, Yasuke was not treated like a samurai. When Oda Nobunaga was killed, based on what we know, Yasuke was just let go. He literally disappears from history after this. He goes with some Jesuit Missionaries and is gone.
A high ranking samurai would have either been taken prisoner, killed or committed seppuku. If the samurai refused to commit seppuku, he would be tortured. That is not how they treated Yasuke. He was simply let go.

People do also misunderstand what 'servant' means here though. A retainer served a master, but they weren't necessarily a serf, a peasant, a slave. A retainer was a position of some elevation. It could even come with some degree of authority. But it also didn't imply nobility, or being a saumurai. Your influence and position was tied to the success of your master, the one you served. There's a bit more historical and cultural nuance to this than either side of this stupid internet slapfight seems willing to actually bother engaging with.

We Japanese have always loved the culture of "If" since ancient times. We often created works with settings that differed from reality, such as imagining if animals behaved like humans or if historical figures had a different gender. This is because our culture has a long-standing tradition of embracing imaginative scenarios. Such "Japanese IF" concepts from overseas are culturally accepted and welcomed.
If Yasuke were imagined as a samurai or an emperor, we would enjoy it. However, the UBI case is clearly different. There were delusional people who padded hundreds of pages with facts that are not even 10 pages of historical data, and what is worse, they claimed it as fact without any permission. Some of them even maliciously post on social networking sites about non-existent black samurai as if they were facts, not as a hypothetical "IF."
This is nothing but an insult. Take a cue from Ghost of Tsushima, which has done a very good job of incorporating fact and IF while respecting Japanese culture.

"Shreksuke, a tall swamp man, arrived in Japan in 1579 and made history as the first foreign-born man to become a samurai warrior. Shreksuke was originally an orge from forbidden swamp and was brought to Japan by knights. The powerful Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga was fascinated by Shreksuke's tall stature and green skin, and upon seeing him, ordered his servants to try and rub the "green ink" off his skin. Despite this strange encounter, Nobunaga took Shreksuke into his service, granting him a sum of money, a house, and a katana. From then on, Shreksuke loyally served Nobunaga as a honored samurai, fighting alongside him in fierce battles. He went from being a swamp thing to a member of the Japanese elite."

What's funny is there have been legends of female Japanese warriors, mostly wives avenging their fallen husbands, who they could have focused on for those DEI points, but the found the idea of an African samurai so much more appealing that they ignored those women for a foreigner those life under Nobunaga isn't as documented as these brave wives. Not to mention that the whole reason why in Japan it is popular with women to practice fencing with naginata is because back in the day, it was mostly up to the women to defend themselves and their town while the men were at war, and the naginata was a popular weapon for women to use

They keep 'missing' opportunities. Happens so often, almost seems intentional except there's no profit to it.
It's not very hard, I really don't understand why they do what they do. I personally think AC has always had the most extreme potential of any game I've ever played. They can literally go anywhere and do anything whilst following the eden story in the background. They go can to any time and any place. With the abstergo devices they've created literal infinite potential. You can connect any character in any non-sensical way. Let them meer historical figures in historal places. If AC goes interdimensional it's probaly in reach of the lore. Modern day shooter? Lore accurate. Medieval knights? Lore accurate. The fall of easter island? Can be easily made lore accurate.
And yes! With AC origins/odyssee/valhalla and their history exploration stuff, I *absolutely* loved it. Get kids gaming and get gamers learning history. Keep those bits factual and you've not just made a game, you've made the most high quality interactive history simulator.
In a game series with near infinite potential, barely can't do wrong as long as you're commited... how can they make these kinds of 'mistakes'?

The AC producers seemed to make a point of not doing any research and disrespecting Japanese culture as much as possible. The Shinobi were neither their own fighter class nor were their deeds deemed lower than the one's of a Samurai as they claim in the trailer. Samurai was a rank, Shinobi was a job (different types of spy work, not a trained fighter class) done by ambassadors, messengers, servants or geishas for example. Samurai sometimes also did assassinations or spy work, therefore they took on the job of a Shinobi. So exactly the opposite of what the AC producers are claiming. A Samurai wouldn't walk through town in his battlefield armor, like he does during the whole game. Also Iga wasn't a secret, hidden village in the mountains, but an important and well known center of commerce with a lot of trade routes. There were no secret Ninja training facilities in the mountains, that's from Batman for heaven's sake. They show cherry blossoms (Sakura) and silver grass (Suzuki) right in the opening sequence together, but the first only appears in spring and the second only in fall, they refused to do any research or even just talk to one Japanese person.

The hive mind of Ubisoft fandom and others who can’t count to 5, endlessly parroting, "It's a video game, not a documentary, so just ignore it," as if it's some profound wisdom.
They conveniently overlook that these so called "video game inaccuracies" aren't the starting seeds of larger misconceptions. Once these distortions are repeated enough, they become part of the accepted narrative. Fast forward a few decades and, surprise! Those "harmless" errors make their way into history books, documentaries, and even statues. Cleopatra, anyone?
This is the exact fate being crafted for Japan’s culture and history. They start by falsely elevating Yusuke from a servant to a Samurai in games and movies because, after all, "it's not a documentary." But when the Japanese community dismisses these distortions as trivial, they risk waking up one day to find their accurate history erased and replaced with Western fantasies.
Not to mention, the same folks endlessly chanting, "It's just a video game," would have an absolute meltdown and scream about systemic racism if, say, tomorrow Ubisoft released a game set in Africa featuring a European or Asian protagonist who’s magically presented as a Zulu warrior or some historical African king. Suddenly, the "it's just a video game" mantra would vanish into thin air, as if it never existed. They’d be up in arms, flooding forums and social media platforms with outrage and condemnation. The double standards would be on full display, and their hypocrisy would shine brightly for all to see. When it’s their cultural icons and historical accuracy on the line, "it's just a video game so who cares" would conveniently become irrelevant.

and as crappy as it was for this sort of thing to occur to start with, 'pets' do not get to be samurai. and if he had elevated some random foreigner with no skills, no training, and no ties to japan or the bushi or buke castes, nobunaga would have faced outright revolt for slighting his actual samurai with such a bald faced and outright offensive move.
it would, almost literally, have been like spitting in each of their faces and telling them they weren't as worthy as this random nobody from another land who had nothing but a name that nobunaga himself had changed (at least for the duration of his stay). the loss of face would have forced their hand, and giri would have required them to rectify the issue. had this actually occurred, nobunaga would likely have not lived past the declaration.
no revolt occurred, and it was a specific man that assassinated nobunaga. one who had long had contention with how nobunaga had run things. this discontent having started well before yasuke even came on the scene. one whose ploy to take over, ultimately failed.
so this idea that yasuke could have been 'samurai' utterly ignores the reality of the era, the castes, and the basic concept behind the japanese social structure itself, even aside from the castes.
