    I think for your water level issues being too high your best bet would be to get an electrical timer one of the old school analog ones with the pins with 5-minute interval pins and set down every other pin your pump will kick on for 5 minutes every 5 minutes therefore allowing your bed to drain out and fill up drain out and fill up best way you don't have to change your design according to having a bell siphon or say a bottom drain

  • @Impulse_Photography
    @Impulse_Photography 4 роки тому +14

    Your drain needs to be on the bottom, and you need to make a siphon to cover the drain so you can build-up back pressure. Your inlet needs to be on the side - I would have got a tub that is much deeper.. You need to search the whole siphon thingy out and see what I mean. Once you added the filter to the fish tank - the plants became pointless decoration. This is no longer an aquaphonic system. It is a regular fish tank with plants getting clean fresh filtered water - the plants will die and the fish tank will continue on because it is independent of the plants.

    • @dontbea7237
      @dontbea7237 2 роки тому

      Out of curiosity what is the purpose of a fish tank filter what does it actually do as a person who holds 12 fish tanks totaling 1500 gallons of water I would like to let you in a little something the purpose of a fish tank filter is to remove the solids harbor beneficial bacteria that converts said solids to a safer non-toxic nutrient minus plants you would have to do a water change weekly to remove nitrates and nitrites this way your water would not have a toxic buildup of nitrates therefore putting this filter on the tank remove the solids any algae and converts said solids into nitrite which is then converted to nitrate which is beneficial for plant growth otherwise you just end up with a stew of solids in your plant bed the filter was a great idea it'll also promote oxygen in the fish tank prior to being pumped to the upper deck therefore the air Stones were kind of an added benefit but not necessary without a filter system this setup would have stunk like s**t and she probably would have quit the whole aquaponics idea all to begin with

    • @bantsone2345

      close, but... a filter is just a stage to harbor "good bacteria" for a well established tank and healthy fish. you sound very intelligent, a bit overly dramatic imo. maybe im reading you wrong. fish go poopy and pee pee in the water. pond filter brings what plants crave... Brando! (aka poopy, pee pee fish water) and ALL plants in fuggin nature love this stuff man. like, you be buying your eggs from wal mart all your life then all the sudden your grand ma gives you them good eggs straight from the chicken ass this morning. but hey, fresh filtered water will work as well with this set up. plants need water. as long as your fish are poopin and peein them plants are suckin up them nitrates and stuff and removing them from the water. thus returning water with nothing but good bacteria back for your fish to flourish. symbiotic to eachother like the good Lord intended. Nothing independent about it brotha. without a buffer for solids that do nothing but clog up your system, a filter is needed. otherwise you will never get glass clear water... i need that clear water. with the right fish you be eating good if they are not pets.
      advice: tube up "the bell siphon" and find out where you want your water level and nature will constantly fill and drain your grow bed. as long as you have a good light cycle you can grow anything really. Not necessary but, i would add a sump tank to your system. perfect for hidden filtration/heaters etc... you could even add your hang on the back filter and hide your hose in tank decoration... if no sump try adding a "swirl filter." i see folks makeing em outta 5 gal buckets. put a little design into it so it dont look like its a project that belongs in the garage. not that its wrong, not everyone has a garage rock aquaponics. if you cant tell im a believer lol. been fish keeping all my life. aquaponics interest me very much. apologies if im coming off as a "know it all" because thats not my intention.

      highly unlikely. you don't even factor in the cost to maintain food for the fish and electricity to keep all these going. might as well just go to the grocery store. this system is not cost effective at all. the theory behind it is awesome and if you plan to use this system you you better find some way to hook this up to a solar kit because that is the only way you will get your money back in the long long LONG run.

    Your pump is supposed to take the fish water waste to the grow bed where the plants feed on them and clean the water at the same time, but you have a filtration system in the aquarium cleaning the tank which does not make sense. The filtration system is not needed as it is in the grow bed where the water is being cleaned. You also need worms in the grow bed to break down the waste so that the plants can feed on them.

    You have a couple of small design issues with how you are setting up. For a flood and drain system (which you would do with the $35 in pebbles you purchased) you need to use a bell siphon you can make one with PVC easy can cheap and still use the $14 bulk head you have. Or you can covert to a floating raft system (remove the rocks) this will limit the type of veggies you can grow as some things can not always be in water like tomatoes. I really enjoyed your passion and work you put into this. I did a lot of the same stuff starting out in my first trial. I can suggest some better videos if you want to keep going with your system. Feel free to reach out. This is a great community you are joining.

I have some pathos and sweet potato growing from an older potato in the upper plant bed(which are doing great). I will have an updated video soon. I think I will do some research on which plants will work with a constant flow system (if that is the correct terminology)eeek. We would like to do some test on plants first before we add any fish. Let me know if you have a system too and share how you set it up.

    • @xxblatxx

      set your level so the tank can accommodate all the water when your not pumping.. im pretty new to all of this as well. but im pretty certain you dont want your roots submerged all the time.. that can cause root rot. roots need to dry out somewhat to grow.. they search for water (and grow) in turn your plants will grow). so find a level in your tank that gives you that middle ground.. love your effort. well done. :)

    No offense but I feel like you took a bunch of weird ideas and added them together lol. I know this vid is old but I hope this helps.
    Using the filter while isnt necessary is a good idea.
    However, ditch the filters they come with and use ceramic rings instead. You never need to replace them despite the b.s. on their packaging. Just check it every month or so and if it looks bad take some tank water and rinse it off in the sink.
    They will grow bacteria that will help break down the waste into what the plants use.
    Dont use worms of you're using the filter there wont be any food waste for them and they cant live in the pellets constantly flooded. They will drown.
    Put the airstones in the aquarium itself.
    Some plants will grow ok constantly wet but some wont. You would have to use a bell siphon instead to flood and drain for ones that cant be constantly wet.
    If you arent using flood and drain you honestly didnt even need the pellets. You could've just put in something to hold the plants up above water and theyd be fine(like a styrofoam raft).

      Johish, We are still working out some kinks. I have pathos plant in there now since it can sit in water and of course, that is working well. I have cycled the water using our turtle tank water. I'm planning on adding some feeder fishes or some inexpensive fishes to start. So no I haven't purchased fishes yet. I have a sweet potato that is growing but its starting to brown a little now. I also added a tomato plant and it's doing the same. I know it is because I don't have a proper ebb and flow going so the roots are rotting. I have an avocado seed in there that is doing well for now. But like Ippaku said below i need to set it up a little better.

    That filter is effectively negating any benefits of the cycle; the _plants_ are the filter. The fish (preferably a big pooper like Carp- Koi, Gold, Pleco, Corey) provide the nutrients for the plants. A symbiotic circle. No other fertilizers are necessary- just flake food, Bloodworms, etc. You must cycle the fish for one month minimum, to have any viable water.
    Be prepared to lose a few fish at first- so don't waste time, money, and life on any delicate "ornamental" fish. Pet Shops might carry "Feeder" fish- those are usually low quality Gold fish, which are perfect here. Still use a heater; "Cold water" fish like 76F-78F, and your plants don't want cold water either.

    • @Anna-tc6rz
      @Anna-tc6rz 5 років тому

      Lol you dont understand how it works do you? Filters grow beneficial bacteria that break waste into what the plants use. It will also keep the water clear. • @pershop4950

      @@Anna-tc6rz hubba is correct for aquaponics, as far as piping in the water without a filter. but there are still bacteria that convert the waste into a form that is usable by the plants, so anna is correct for the nitrogen cycle and plants taking up nitrates.

And there is no benefit to waiting 2 or 3 months to get such a small harvest. Financially you're paying an exorbitant amount of money for whatever you're producing when you calculate the costs.

      All of home gardening is like this, but people still enjoy it. Eg, wait all summer long for some peppers and tomatoes while using resources to keep them safe from bugs and keeping them growing, or go the store and buy a pound or two as you need it? The store certainly is "more efficient".
