I heard people talking about the media meltdown this week and THIS song immediately came to mind! Haven't heard it since maybe the early '90's!! And I know its from the early-to-mid-80's. Classic Steve Taylor.
I haven't heard this song since 1986! My god, that's before most people were even born!! Guess I'm getting older now. I remember driving the back roads of Kentucky during a summer mission trip to go get fast food somewhere and listening to this on my cassette tape in my 1977 Mercury Bobcat. So many good songs on this album.
My friend got me to go to this video shoot at a Colorado Springs Highschool Amphitheater. I can't see us in the crowd but we're there dancing our butts off! The best part was when he was off stage looking at the video shoots and we got the band to play Wipeout for us! Good times!
I thought this video was a figment of my imagination. How glad I am that my imagination is not this terrifying haha. I remember having nightmares every time I watched this in my youth. I'm glad I found it again. The message is right on.
This video scared the hell out of me when I first saw it as a little kid. For the next few years, I would do whatever I could to keep my dad from watching Christian video shows out of fear that I would see it again. Over 30 years later, I still find it kind of unsettling.
Babysitter took me to see this dude when i was a kid. Probably the only way she could go to the show and see her bf. You're welcome, Donna. I still have the tape, too. I always talk about the R.E.M. show she took me to the year after but this show was just as fun.
I haven't heard this in decades, didn't know about the video. This is genius and funny not to mention right on spiritually. Who says Christians can't be relevant, creative and still be Biblically correct!!! 🙌🏿

did the person who commented that that person got that this songs lyrics were about how you cant serve god and money delete the comment i cant find it now, only in my notifications, it seemed like a good comment but i dont know how you got that from these lyrics??
the song is about how all of the governmental and hollywood leaders and elite are really just people-- their wealth and status mean nothing when it comes to the final days before God.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Steve Taylor was a True Original Musical humorist taking aim at Christian & Cultural hypocrisy equally well. Look at this Meltdown Album 1984 & later "I Predict 1990" & "Squint" - fabulous quality work that was not as widely known as should be. Underappreciated as Steve & Some Band (as he called them) transcended easy categorization. But gems in every sense of the Alt Rock scene.

This was one of my favorite songs in high school. Steve's songs always had a clever message.
This takes me right back to the 80's. Still good, nearly 40 years on. I love his clever lyrics.
