Thank god their is still some common sense on this subject. Having a non fanatical approach to solving our energy needs long term would get so much more support. First, the planet has had climate changes and will continue to do so probably regardless of what we do. But we risk finding solutions and alternatives if it turns into another items to push radical agendas. Or every time there is a hurricane, we falsely claim it’s due to global warming. Or if there is a forest fire in a forest full of dead trees we refuse to harvest. The solution must be accompanied with technical progress and not regressive to humanity. Elon is a person of action and has done more than anyone on the subject. Science and technology got us to where we are, it should have the ability to find acceptable solutions.

    • @antoniomura1458
      @antoniomura1458 15 годин тому

You do know scientists are able to differentiate between man made global warming and heat from natural sun cycles. Also we don't need constant economic growth to develop the necessary science to restoring our climate. That would be like saying we shouldn't redistribute already existing net wealth to poorer countries, like they should apparently just all grow their economies without reliance on foreign aid. I guess according to you limiting wealth for rich people and countries is "fanatical"?

Elon Musk. Love this guy, represents the better side of the human being, and really the capacity and state of most of our hearts. He is a DOER and visionary, doing a LOT of good on his own, without support of government /our collective resources and will. He is leading.
However, I think maybe his non-chalant demeaner and words give the impression that the situation is less serious than it is,though does gently allude to this threat.
The ocean acidity and warming threatens more than the coral reefs (whose loss would be a tragedy of loss of beauty and ecological vitality). It threatens: a die off of the ocean phytoplankton which produce much of the world's oxygen and are the basis of all ocean life, a large part of the ocean's capacity to absorb excess atmospheric carbon (our carbon production), and the collapse of the Atlantic conveyor which is responsible for Europe's relatively warm climate with climate change elsewhere as the atmosphere seeks a new equilibrium. The ocean no longer acts as a carbon sink /it's reached the carbon saturation point and it is the ocean carbon sink that has protected us and planet from the carbon we have produced since the begining of the industrial age, otherwise we may have already experienced the irreversible (in human scale time) collapse of the exceptionally benign and benevolent earth systems that we and all life enjoy and depend on.
Carbon sequestration /putting primeval fossil carbon back into the ground can be achieved rapidly in several ways including the conversion of world agriculture, now petro-chemical ag, to organic agriculture, and even more so with the use of biochar in this new agriculture. This plus the natural earth systems that absorbed primeval carbon to give us today's climate will restore our benevolent climate - the rain forests, the oceans, the weather.
Linear (slow) climate change, as Elon has noted, is not so alarming but he also mentions that the change is "exponential" in geologic time, which is VERY DANGEOUS, especially when this change could at ANY MOMENT accelerate catastrophically due to any one of a few tipping points - release of methane and carbon deposits in the oceans and frozent tundra. When this happens, game over, with catastrophic changes in the food supply and habitat of humans and all creatures. He points out that the chance for climate tipping can vary greatly, but given the consequences and the fact that we must ultimately convert to the energy of today's sunlight, why not do it now and avoid the risk - why play with fire (the fire of fossil fuels)?
I would like to see Elon take a much stronger stance for emergency action to avoid the catastrophe of abrupt climate change - abrupt not only in geologic time but human-scale time, ie a few years.
Again, I'm not criticizing Elon. He is one of the best proponents of sustainable prosperity for us an all life, he cares and he is a man of action. Amidst all the selfish squabbling vested interests and the common person, people look to him for an unbiased view, wisdom and practical action. Not an easy role to be in, but ultimately we all hold the responsibility and there is a higher power at play that is omnipotent and loving.
I was disappointed to hear that Trump has appointed Elon to help in increasing government efficiency, something he can do well but does not make the best use of his knowledge, awareness, creativity and positive will. He should be the "sustainable living czar" or "New Paradigm Creation TAsk Force Director", charged with re-inventing our civilization, creating a new, sustainable, benign way of life with prosperity for all life and perpetual beauty and vitality of the Earth. Unfortunately, Trump's focus seems to be on on restoration and increase of wealth generation at the expense of Nature and the health of the planet which are the source of all wealth, not on sustainable wealth production and prosperty for us and all life.
Elon could envision and help achieve the New Paradigm of Civilization and the Earth. I think he will help do this one day, he is alraedy doing it with his business creativity, but I hope one day he will be part of a government leadership team which will direct an emergency mobilization to build the New Paradigm. We have both a moral and survival imperative to do so and I think Elon already recognizes this because he has the heart and sense of personal responsibility, which we must all awaken to for this is our individual and collective task and privilege, not just the task of Elon..

I prefer Elon’s opinion in this topic, I’ve spent too much time listening to people who think we’re all doomed and there is no way to save humanity. I think a lot of people just focus on the negatives, maybe they should get out in nature like these guys and see that the earth is still very much alive and not going anywhere.

  • @tangobayus

    Carbon is not a problem.
We are a carbon-based life form.
If you remove carbon, you remove life.
If you return to pre-industrial levels of CO2, you will return to a pre-industrial life-style.
    Do you want that?
    CO2 is plant food.
We need more CO2 to grow more food, not less.
    Less CO2 means global starvation.
    Do you want that?
Have you forgotten your high school biology?
Do you need to review photosynthesis?
Do you know that greenhouse growers increase CO2 to more than 1,000 ppm?
    Why do they do that?
Where is the science that proves that .04% of the atmosphere governs climate?
You've been misled by a lot of fake "science."

Elon has plenty of different ideas. Sending HB crew to the planet which has not even oxygen looks like a suicide mission, if it has nothing to do with saving of Earth. But why not trying on our planet somewhere high in the mountains to get more oxygen of the atmosphere first or to reduce the % of O2, just using a smaller part of equipment, then embracing more territories on this planet instead of sending people to the space. Elon has a concept, still unclear, what the Marsonauts will have to cope with. We had already some good guys walking on the Moon... They had to get back home anyway. I am afraid the climate will certainly change up to 2031 drastically and non one on the Earth is able to establish even smaller living conditions on Mars in this period of time left for us. One thing is to manufacture an electricity driving device or better internet, the other is the global move to other planet, where NO one has ever been. I think it makes sense preparing a better technology how to run the climate changes on this planet. Climate change can not wait, guys! Mars can not save the mankind in 10 years, even If we get 0,001% of our earth-like atmosphere there and the day temperature will be like in the Antarctic. I love scientists and especially fiction ones, i admire such people, but they can not solve even a smaller problem when it is something to do with a situation in the outer space!
Renewable energy is not a solution when its not enough. One can dress rags, eating less, moving less but it will not help to make out of Mars a planet with habitable conditions.
