These women are from the United States. The video celebrates the tradition of African American Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) women wearing fashionable hats in church and at religious events. This custom of females wearing a head covering in the church sanctuary which led to the custom of wearing stylish hats to church is (or was) also practiced in some other Black American churches. It's my experience as a Black Baptist (in the USA) that nowadays only a few Black women wear hats in church on Sundays or at other church events, even during the Easter service, when it was traditional for women (and girls) to wear their most stylish hats.
The second song reminds me of something from the past. Makes me want to cut a step. I am going to have to play this for an undetermined number of times for an undetermined number of days. It is more amazing than the hats.which I have basically forgot all about... am I the only one that feels a little stirring in the feet? Cant be! A little teary eyed? Can't be! a little troubled on the inside? Can't be.
Sometimes I can't stand sitting behind these mother's @ church bcuz I can't see...their hats be so big...especially my grandmothers hats lol!!! But they know they can get SHARP!!!! I usually like the short ones like Twinkie has on @ 3:29 but, I LOVE and want that one @ 8:31...now that was SHARP!!!

Some of the larger wide rimmed hats, those are more than likely Donna Vinci and are going to run you at least $200. I love them, but some of the rims can be too, too broad and can take up almost an entire back seat of a car, lol!

Now I grew up COGIC and so did my parents, I showed them this video and they could not stop laughing. A lot of church people don't even dress like this any more only COGIC and some Baptist churches that I have been in not to say African-American Methodist.. and other churches don't have someone that dress a little over the top
At the core wearing these hats and outfits are a status symbol. They are worn for a purpose. To show wealth, status, and to attract attention. To show off. There’s no difference from everyone else in the world. Wearing revealing clothes is considered immodest. But the reality is this form of clothing is also by definition immodest. You either follow your Bible or you don’t. But I figured out that most of the people I’m these church aren’t concerned with how well they follow the Bible but rather adapt and fitting into their culture or community ie the cogic church or whatever organization they are in. They create rules for themselves and use the Bible to support them even if it contradicts. People in the church don’t like to think to deep into these things because if starts to mess with your world view which is uncomfortable but ….facts remain. On a “sin” level this is no different than arriving at church looking like Beyoncé on stage lol
Brandi Nicks that’s a valid question and I’m glad you asked! The way COGIC men and women dress for church and convention stems way back to the infancy of our great organization. The birthing ground of the Church of God in Christ is Memphis Tennessee and the charter members if you will were all from surrounding cities/towns and stateside the the south. The occupation for most blacks in the early 1900’s living in the south where sharecroppers who’s wardrobe pretty much consisted of overalls, flannel, and burlap. When it was time for church and great meetings of worship. They were very much excited to put on something much greater than denim overalls and burlap skirts. It was tradition to put on your absolute best to see the king even if it was borrowed. And so even today that tradition is undying in this body of Christ to pay homage to those who built this grand ole church. I agree some of our looks are a bit much, but COGIC begets COGIC it’s an understanding and a respect. It may not be important to you, and you may even think it interferes with our worship but allow me to clear the air and say that how we dress is a form of worship as well. It may not be for all to understand but it’s what makes us set apart for sure. God Bless you WOG!
