Man. The production value of your videos are really out of this world. This is perfect.
Honestly I can't understand how his income is greater than his expenses.
I didn't know Stiffler was a photographer!
brilliant !
I love the finale picture with the vintage gas station. Lot of work, but: Superb. 👍
I am trying to prepare a shoot for my fathers 75' Grand AM and this is PERFECT! This helped me a lot and this was only the second video I clicked on. No time wasted. Super stoked. Thank you!
Not many people put this much thought into a video , great job guys
I love that you did the photography AND the editing work yourself (with help of course). I've seen too many videos lately where the photographer just hands the photo off to somebody else to edit.
The only way to achieve the vision you want is to do it all yourself. Especially for a present!
Why someone dislike this video? They dont deserve to watch this mastery! Good effort fstoppers!!
I really liked this and no kidding the first photo took a huge amount of effort. The second one though does seem better, although for me the tires seem overexposed? Still it was a very cool trick to light up individual parts of the car and merge them in photoshop.
The best tutorial I have ever seen, Really. I have spent way too many hours watching good titles with poor production and execution.
Your tutorials are worth every second.
Thanks for taking the time.
this is legendary. These types of videos get me so hyped!
Thanks @Fstoppers. Valuable information including how to get out of a ticket when one of my lights is out. Just tell the cop, no problem. I just Photoshop it on!
man, this tutorial was incredible, I was unaware of this. Incredible.
Brilliant video...will have to give that a try with my Harley...Thanks tons for all your videos!
This is the best video I've ever seen about photography
Thanks a lot for that
What a great and informative video Lee . I like this kind of tutorials. Best wishes.
What a great idea to use a location with a white overhead! Thank you.
Now I will just have to keep my eyes open.
BTW, on the old gas station photo, I would have liked to see some light coming from inside or at least detail on the windows. Nice job!
Amazing photography skills... great looking car.... Photoshop rules!
just awesome! fantastic in covering so much info in such concise and fluid manner. and second that mike kelley dvd, its great.
Kind of takes the fun out of photography if you have to go through all this to be satisfied with an image.
My sentiments exactly. You don't have to be a good photographer just a computer genius.
I will try the easy "use the gas station island roof" technique and let you know how it goes. It was brilliant and thanks for sharing.
Vin Weathermon lol
Shooting the car in a controlled environment inside would have been one way but this was awesome! nice work!
never wanted to shoot a car before, but this is really awesome, inspiring
Great tutorial! I don't get to enjoy high level editing videos like this very often. Also, I would have never thought of using a gas station roof for that nice diffused sky light - thanks.
Long exposures with led light panels give you a similar look, with the streaking reflections. I do this multi flash and layering technique a lot with cars.
Dude, you are awesome! I have never seen a guy with such a pleasant and winsome character! Keep up the good work. thx for sharing! Greetings from Austria
These F Stopper guys are savvy businessman
Beautiful image & perfect tutorial
Great tutorial! I really appreciate your work.
you could have fixed the reflection with polarizer filter
I think a polarizer would have just removed ALL reflections and left the side of the car Orange. We were going for a smooth and consistent highlight, not the removal of all highlights. I could be wrong though
my idea is to have one without any reflections then mask parts which he likes
as far as i know, CPL removes reflections other than those from metals
Timeless video.
Great tutorial. I don't understand why do people hate him so much.
thanks Llee i really enjoyed that and learned a lot from it
and am downloading it now
Wow that overlay was cool
Such great information thanks for making this video!!
awesome tutorial, thanks very much, great video too!
This video is a bomb! It has so much information! I learned loads!
What a great video, I got brain fried by the complexity of the first shot, but awesome job! The real gold was the tip for using a ceiling as a replacement for a full length soft bank I will be experimenting with these ideas. Thanks guys.
I think both images look great. And if you were to do this for a specific brand, the client or art director or brand manager would let you know which one they are looking for. Personally, I prefer the first image. The gas station and the car match perfectly, there is a connection. The Car with the highlights and shadows alone...not so much.
this is brilliant! thanks for sharing guys
FSTOPPERS ROCKS....COMMENTERS BELOW SUX!!
This is a really great tutorial ! Thx a lot!
That was... impressive! Forget photography, my personality improved!!! ;-)
more than awesome review, thank you so much!
Great job and thank you for this tutorial Lee! top as usual ;)
As an additional point, one might try roughly cutting out the areas to be used rather than inserting the entire image. It will reduce the working file size quite a bit...
This is awesome!
Reminds me of the time I bought a '67 Jag XKE roadster for my daddy!
Like just for the car! The tutorial is great too btw.
vadimyakus I
That’s full on! But I will have a go 👌
mind blowing tutorial.
Absolutely no budget while he uses a 5k light and battery.
Rental?
you can do it with a speedlite
Simply fantastics
Lol he is a professional photographer but he didn't think to use a polarizing filter to get rid of the reflections.
a polarizer doesn't take them out completely on a car. buy one and try it
You can stack images with different polerizations and paint in the clean surfaces.
He clearly stated that he is not a professional photographer, right at the beginning of the video.
@@MauroSanna but he got all the octogons and all the other tools which he said he spent allot of money on lol
@@Henr1k painting them in looks like shit, it's best to get no reflections in-camera at all.
Great work
Wow what a shoot and monumental post production , but as I am just getting into automotive photography for the multitude of boy racers and enthusiasts around me here in Scotland , so after looking into location work and light painting and the time consuming post production that it would end up being out of most folks budgets so knowing I would have to set limitations it has become a matter of which ones so my thought process after seeing an overcast sky is amazing was to look at a car as just an object same as any thing else just very big , OMG you seem to coming to a simmilar solution , anyway first limitation as we get really shit weather here in Scotland is location so I am trying to find a disused warehouse or barn to get a controlled environment to work in , my lighting options may seem mad but there is common sense in it , if a white roof bouncing strobes off it , shooting strobes down through a white king size bed sheet or using a 7 foot shoot through brolly for fill light and 6 foot strip boxes above , also like you I have come across the issue of lighting wheels seperately but that is no work at all with seperate shots layers and masks which I want to minimise to keep costs down for clients coz this is not for fun it is for business . I had also figured out cutting out the car in PS and creating a colour complimenting seamless which has dimension too by creating where a seamless gathers some light as it sweeps to the floor and as seen in your work a car really stands out as a poster with a seamless look and no distractions so this vid has been a god send to me and confirmation of many aspects relative to what I want to achieve after a total head fry stage , yep there is a lot to said for the purity of a fine art look over some gimmick over done looks which I see all over the place but man your petrol station shot was epic . Any way as I progress I will be happy to share solutions to problems as most of the time that is what it is all about , solutions for an intended outcome within the budgets of a potential market and repeatable in a consistent way .
Art is a process and you have expalined very well! Thank you for sharing!
How big was your psd file size when you were all done with the first picture? This shoot is so awesome! Thanks for the video.
Thank You for sharing!
I love the gas station concept! But how did you determine the intensity of the flash itself? A flash meter? I am obviously new to this concept, but it looks like its walking around with a flash set at max? That is too simple.
you really know how to go around the houses make things difficult for yourself....shoot the car on a overcast day bracket, if you want flash highlights then do that, then cut out with shadow composite the flash high lights.
it kind of was an overcast day....
you put the car under a white roof at night....do it in the daylight
How can I make a background like that at 19:13?
Life made difficult lmfao. But those tips and tricks are priceless :)
BEST "tutorial" video EVAR.
Thanks man.
Honestly, if I was passing by I would have taken a few pictures with my phone and be perfectly happy
Omer Magen but this is for advertising purposes not a shitty snapshot....
Since u are doing the composition in photshop anyways, why did u not shoot the car in studio or controlled lighting? and add it to the exposure of the gas station? sometimes i do not understand.
the final image lacks credibility, the lighting is overdone and looks unnatural.
I think you have over complicated an otherwise simple shot imo.
With digital art, the artist paints how wishes to perceive the outcome. It's his vision. Being natural has little to do with it.
The idea was to create a stylized photo that matches the time. Back then it was black and white photos mainly, but if you look at stylized pin-ups from that period, the colors match perfectly well. Like he said, he got a little 'over cartoonish' at some point and had to tone it down. With a car and settings like that, not going crazy would be a waste of location!
This whole "natural" argument is ridiculous. The minute you bring out a light, scrim, flag, etc, it's no longer "natural". Not to mention that when you start manipulating pixels, "natural" is out the window. Natural is a snapshot.
I'm a digital artist. I light the crap out of my scenes. "Natural" is boring and left to people who don't know how to light and composite.
Great Vid Lee... I can't seem to find a different vid you did where a car was at a gas station ( I think ); it's not the camaro but you went through a step by step similar to this one. May I have the link to it? Thx
Pretty awesome!
Researching about the Einstein light right now.
Could you tell me what model(s) do you recommend?
Thanks!
greatttt video!!!!!!!!!
Nice Picture Nice Work
What would be a good flash unit to buy to do the technique used in the later half of the vid in the gas station? Would a speedlight suffice? Or do I need an einstein flash unit.
Posted on the FB page how I did a simulator photo without all the Photoshop >>>yes I know my specular hi-lights are not so soft ... but its a different look.. Have a look there on Facebook .. Thanks
Nice Video
Interesting. You essentially did a form of light painting of your reflections
old video, but you could have used a CPL filter for the reflections.
Thank you !
Thanx for sharring with us the experiece.
That was not an easy work.
Looks like CG, but super cool techniques.
Last summer my sister-in-law got a new car, so I wanted to take some photos of it. I tried a similar technique to this for the first time and was pretty happy with what I got. Not perfect, but I didn't spend a ton of time on it either.
This is the shot: fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1/1185189_10151896193310505_362693492_n.jpg
I then tried a little different approach, but the same basic idea, with my car:fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/557807_10151898438350505_2053195146_n.jpg
Again, not perfect, but it's a start. I'm just waiting for the weather to stop being so crappy so I can do some more.
Did you keep the camera settings the same? Can you post what settings you used for this shoot?
you could say it looks overdone and un natural but it has a really cool cartoony look imo
Slight problem, only 24/7 gas stations where I live. I might try this underneath a bridge though.
haha mijn achternaam is gewoon Veenendaal 😃 zie je ook niet vaak 👍
Take care sir
Awesome thx!!!
could you pls write me the link of the background at the end, would be super cool :D
I don't think perfect is what this type of a car needs from a picture. It's a nice car. Just let it look good. Don't over d... too late.

So is every photo a composite now?
just wow
Thanks for share
How much would you charge a client for a composite like that?
What were your ISO and Shutter Speeds? Great photo shoot though
The first shoot changes as the ambient changes. We also lowered the exposure depending on if we wanted more ambient light or more strobe light to show up.
In the second shoot, I believe I added the text to the dark frame we started out with.
Patrick Hall Thanks, Patrick
they are great images but not the slightest bit realistic
+AndrewMSS You havent done much automotive photography have you ?
I have actually smart arse
you know these pictures on car posters. these cars look great. to great to Be realistic. that's what alot of photographed want
I think It's a good thing try to do the best in the photo shoot session, but a good post productor can achieve excellent results in some reflexion and lighting problems. even more with multiple expositions like this. there is no reason to put a flash in the tires when you have a layer with enough information in these area with a overexposed photo.
Any way, good work!
What speedlight diffuser you've used to light up the wheels?
the lighten overlay isn't working. it just stays as what the top layer looks like
What's the layers merge mode on Photoshop? Multiply? Couldn't get it on the video.
usually Lighten. -P
How is the background made??!
Very nicely explained. I believe I see a ProFoto controller on the camera at the first shoot. How do you combine/connect the PocketWizard hand held tricker since the profoto controller is in the cameras hot-shoe, please? Would love to know. I have TT1 and TT5's
fairly busy image but 10/10 for effort
how the guy with the flash disappear? he's not in the final image...
did you watch the video? We cut the car out using the pen tool
Can anyone help me find that background image? Thanks
