- Fred Wellman chats with Marine Corps wounded warrior spouse and Democratic Congressional Candidate Callie Barr who is taking on Jack Bergman in Michigan’s giant and sprawling 1st District. Callie was born and raised in the district with her family roots going back five generations. After September 11, Callie’s future husband and high school sweetheart, Matt, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served two tours in Iraq, and one in Afghanistan. Callie moved with her husband five times in fifteen years, raising two girls and eventually caregiving for Matt after he suffered combat injuries, including post-traumatic stress and a traumatic brain injury. In 2010, Callie received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Central Michigan University. As a high school English teacher, Callie taught reading, writing, and critical thinking. However, faced with her husband’s significant injuries, and frustrated by the lack of support for active military members and returning veterans, Callie became involved in non-profit work advocating for military families. Motivated by the desire to advocate for policy changes at the federal level, Callie went on to receive a law degree, graduating with honors from the University of Michigan Law School. After graduation, Callie worked as a litigation attorney while also connecting veterans to free legal services. Callie believes we deserve a representative who shows up and, instead of playing to political extremes, actually gets things done for Upper and Northern Michigan.

I always donate to the candidates that Fred has on. They're genuinely good candidates and actually care about our democracy and our country. As someone who also lives in a rural area I really hope Callie wins her district.
Can we fix the electoral college?
The antiquated Electoral College needs to be abolished. It doesn’t represent We The People. The Federal Government needs to create a Federal Election Presidential Day Holiday; so Voters aren’t disenfranchised… with Only the Popular Vote.

Just as in China under Mao and others. One child and the others had to die. That wouldn’t help today’s demographics, but what if they took that to the logical conclusion that it was the state governments who declared who had the right to have a baby in the first place. With those distances, community cohesiveness is absolutely neccessary. What the candidate here is describing is how to bring communities like hers into the broader world while preserving their identity. She seems to have a very good idea of how to do that. She is the perfect representative, and it should be formalized to Representative.

A breath of fresh air, I've almost lost my daughter through her having an ectopic pregnancy. As an Englishman I couldn't even think of losing her because of the government telling us that because they said that she couldn't have help, I think that I would be going out to get them in any way that I could whatever that had to be...
I believe that they shouldn't ever be elected again for their actions in that policy. If they say that they are following the Bible, THEY ARE NOT in the Bible the commandments tell us not to kill, by telling pregnant women that they can't have any medical help is telling them that we are going to let you DIE and we don't care!
George Carlin was right God rest His soul; Pro-life Conservatives are only concerned about the birth of the baby once it is out of the mother they don't give a damn & once it reaches military age that's the only time that Conservatives really are concerned other than that any social help the parents or baby need tough luck

I live in a red district in Ohio. Every now and then, a co-worker goes on some rant (nobody was saying one thing for one party or the other, my co-workers just feel justified to go on rants without anyone asking their opinion.) Most people just ignore them, but whenever they are given just the tiniest bit of criticism, every single Republican freaks out and goes on the defense and "pretends" that they are the ones being attacked, and ignoring the fact that they are they ones that went out of their way to talk BS in a room full of people who don't care, and just want to go to work to do their job.
It is a fact that the biggest snowflakes and the weakest people in America are trump supporters.

There is a (legitimate) skepticism of military vet candidates. There has been a giant wave of them, the most prominent being Secretary Butigieg.
That’s one problem that exists in this country. Just because someone served in the military, doesn’t mean that that person is capable to serve in the government. The former general denying the elections and voting down the rights of others, should be a warning to everyone who thinks that, just people because served in the military, it doesn’t mean that they can be good politician. I am a veteran myself, yet that doesn’t qualify me to serve in the capacity of a politician.
