Conrail's Pittsburgh mainline is a roller coaster railroad from Pittsburgh to Altoona PA. It is nothing but humps and dips all the way that required helpers in both directions on heavy trains. Conrail puts on a good show and is hard core mountain Railroading.
The crest of Carney Hill is situated between Greensburg and Latrobe at mile 317. Both of these towns sit in a dip and trains running through these towns get a run for the next hill.
