In musical form "Memoirs of Sangesar" recounts the journey a poor child who pursued an unlikely dream across continents, cultures, and centuries. In doing so he transformed not only himself, but revolutionized a proud, ancient musical tradition.
The youngest of 10 children born to a poor family in the remote mountain village of Sangesar, Composer and Santoor master Kourosh Zolani challenged family tradition when he left to study music in Tehran. After mastering the traditional forms of the staunchly conservative Persian classical repertoire, Kourosh again yearned for the freedom he had sought as a boy. As he grew into a mature artist, he felt compelled to push beyond the limitations of the genre. He realized that he must update the technical capabilities of his ancient instrument in order to fully express his new style and bring Persian classical music into the new millennium.
With the invention of a modern, chromatic Santoor, Kourosh delighted his shocked colleagues with performances that they had previously believed to be impossible. Far from his beginnings as a shy village boy, beyond the ancient shadow of a beautiful but stifling tradition, he stood before them as a new man. As his own man.
Kourosh's musical visions represent an attempt to bridge the gap between tradition and growth, dreams and reality.

My late father talked about a strange Sangesari that he met in the Mosque and helped him financially. I asked him how he trust the man who he did not know. My father said "son he was a Sangesari." After 44 years in US still I speak Sangesari with my siblings and relatives. Proud to be a Sangesari.

@SusanPower1 The instrument is an Iranian Santour (also spelled Santoor). There are many musical pieces with this instrument on UA-cam. For example, search for "Tamana Parviz Meshkatian santoor" on UA-cam, I think you will like it.

why are these hammered dulcimers so unheard of in the west?.it's like taking away a lot of the what i would see as the unnecessary complications of a piano. also i think this video is way over dramatic. i love the sound though. i want one so i can play around with different temperaments and tones.
