  • We're bringing our podcast Cities After... to UA-cam!
[S01 E09] This podcast will be the first of four episodes where, together with future guests, Prof. Robles-Duran will slowly adopt the city of Barcelona as a sample to think through some of the tendencies of a post-pandemic neoliberal urbanization. He will do so by looking at three trending development drivers, the production of urban spectacle, the burdens of rental housing, and the limitless expansion of mass tourism.
Cities After... is a bi-weekly podcast about the future of cities; grounded in our daily urban struggles, it is part dystopian and part utopian. The intention is to entice civic imagination into action, because a more just and sustainable urban future is possible.
Miguel Robles-Durán is an urbanist with expertise in the design and analysis of complex urban systems and urban political-ecology. He is an associate professor of urbanism and director of the graduate urban programs at The New School / Parsons School of Design in New York City. Read his full bio on our website.

I want all the people on the planet to be happy, so I will talk about it and do it! Friends, the International Social Project CREATIVE SOCIETY is gaining tremendous momentum in the world. People from different countries, nationalities and religions are coming together to build a just society. Only together we can change our world!

I've seen this a lot across Mexico, US, and Canada. There no one to counter the arguments of the status quo in most cities.

I applaud you, we cannot continue to allow our limited resources to be consumed by the idea of creating luxury spaces no one can afford, many of these luxury condos with marble and granite luxury finishes are empty, while the maintenance crew who cares for them has no place to live close to where they work. You walk through these luxury zones and see no children, just singles with dogs. These singles cannot afford to scale up to form a pair of parents with children. We must not accept this dead end future for humanity.

There shouldn't be any children living in downtowns anyway.

Marxist theories and rhetoric always sounds great. It’s your track record that sucks.
Someone give me an example of a city or country that became more “just and sustainable” under socialism, post capitalism. Your plans to transform Barcelona into a socialist utopia sounded amazing with all of the lofty rhetoric you used to describe them. So again, tell me where this has actually worked.

You should read the works of Noam Chomsky first, before getting into all this socialist stuff. It's just impossible to understand what should be done without knowing what has been done by powerful capitalist states (especially America, against all attempts to build socialist projects). There are many Noam Chomsky lectures (from his younger days) on UA-cam.

@@terriej123 Yes well, it both starts and ends there. We’ve already seen how this story ends. I don’t believe in utopias. They always end the same.
