I started following you 3 years ago when I started my Frugal Financial Journey and often looked to your channel for encouragement. I’m also a huge Dave Ramsey fan. Finally got our Emergency Fund set up just before my husband suffered a massive stroke and is now unable to work at all. Thank God we got things in order before this happened. Stuff happens and it’s our responsibility to be prepared. Thank you for everything!❤
"I slay all day, either way." That's a great rhyme! It's true, too. Living on a frugal budget means not having to do a radical adjustment if something comes up.
I’ve lost a week of work because my brother is fighting for his life. He will be airlifted to University of Michigan today. Lymphoma that has gone into the GI tract, bone marrow, and brain. Instead of my financial bank, I’m filling my prayer bank this week. Things are not good. Not good at all.
DON'T FALL!!! New to your channel, Miss Kate and this past week has been LIFE CHANGING. Thank you so much for your wisdom and experience and generous heart to share it. Onward!
I began my guerrilla sewing "career" in grade school because we were to buy a meaningful Christmas gift out of our allowance for each of the nuclear family, any gifts out of birthday party gifts for all others year 'round, most of the snack or treat foods, junk item wants, and a growing number of our activity costs like roller skating and movies. It seemed as if i was saving all year long to buy Christmas gifts by golly. (I may have had to pay for "all" my sewing but my adult self realized that dear 'ole mom contributed significantly.) This taught and internalized a number of things including the savings power of diy; and even better with scrap, repurposed, and elsewise discarded materials and supplies. DIY has been fundamental in my and our frugal living, dare i say it life-style. Scrounging for and using free things for DIY has been particularly critical in our imposed (reduced income) and self-imposed (saving dollars for a reason) leaner times. Inbetween DIY has given us more bang for our buck whether its been as simple as making our own Christmas gift tags out of brown paper grocery bags or utilizing brown mailing wrap for at least some of the gift wrap; in a time of lean one of the gifts was a set of 100-ish brown paper gift tags in a nice little repurposed box which honestly went over well. Towards keeping spirits high while being frugal, living within our means, and all that - Doing the scrounging and DIY thing for wants, things that glitter, decor, and items that serve minimal purpose is probably number 1. The trick is to not spend a fortune on all the things required in the repurposing and projecting efforts. There is so much usable stuff thrown away from free cardboard boxes at your favorite retailers to stuff put on the curb or beside the apartment dumpster on garbage day; places like Facebook's Buy Nothing to Craigs List's free category; post garage sale piles and simple word of mouth networking. Plus if it came free and you don't like what you produced or an item is nolonger purposeful, it is much less painful to get rid of.
Great advice. I’ve had a deluge of house maintenance bills in the last few months. Annoying, yes, but I just tweak the budget and will be able to recover just fine. I would be stressed to the point of insanity if I didn’t have savings and a plan.
Great message Kate! To me, it's easier to stay on my budget and investing goals when I am reminded of my ultimate goal= financial independence. If I sacrifice my immediate wants now so I can enjoy any want later, that's what keeps me going and saving and investing at such a high rate. Could I go on an extravagant vacation instead? Sure. Could I redo my basement? Sure. But I can do all of those things and even more AND not ever have to work again if I invest my money instead and allow it to pay for my lifestyle. Um, I'll take that goal any day!
Oh Kate, this topic rings such a BELL for me. Years ago I was that person that WAS always in over my head! I’ve used a solid budget for years. BUT I didn’t follow my own core rules. Things would pop up and I didn’t have that category in my budget, out can the credit cards! Sound familiar people? Once I figured out I can follow a budget with set categories life was good. Once in a while I may pull from one category to add to another category, but next month I pay it back.
Don't fall! We enjoy the frugal minimalist lifestyle too much to fall. Our minimal living expenses cost us $600 a month now that the kids are grown. By remaining debt-free we are not constrained by economic downturns. Living simply means we had the house we could build without a mortgage. I'd be happy in a one room cabin but DH enjoys building so we have a few extra rooms now. It was always about the journey and not just about the goal. Everything we earn over that is carefully invested or used for anything we enjoy. It used to be travel and we are slowly getting back into that after taking the last four years off. A train trip to go on a backpacking tour of the Grand Canyon is set for next July, plus low-cost local camping and backpacking trips in the meantime. Instead of ordering Mountain House dehydrated meals we cook from scratch and dehydrate food ourselves. That is our commitment to our financial freedom.
Shesirie! I have an entire playlist talking about when I bought my home for the first time. I felt your nervousness too! Maybe some of this playlist will help:) ua-cam.com/video/l8FtdiaD8tI/v-deo.html PS-CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Don't fall!! I love these tips. I am trying to continue my shelftember challenge and have been good about only getting stuff on sale. In fact, my hubby went grocery shopping yesterday and only got what was needed (on sale on our list) and he used cash for it, so we stayed on budget!!
People overthink these things. 1. Live in a cheap place. 2. Don't overspend on transportation. 3. Don't overspend on food. A good example is you are comparing apartment A and B. Both cost the same in rent. A is small, but close to work and B is bigger, but further away. Picking A means you spend less on transportation, heating/cooling/electricity so it is a much cheaper option. Most people think a bigger place is better and that is costing them a lot. Saving $20/year on switching toilet paper is fine, go for it, but you save way more keeping fixed costs down.
Now that I am more into budgeting and executing my plan to pay off specific debts in 18 months I have reduced the "aahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!" feelings of panic and impulse spending. Also knowing that the $20 I have in my wallet is really mine to spend on wants prevents me from panicking about being overdrawn at the bank. Facing my financial fears has allowed me to see that I can tackle them in a steady measured way paycheck by paycheck. Thanks Kate!
I explain to my 'little self' (young impulsive me) that the budget says there's not enough for that now, but this way our life gets better than that a while later.
Kate! This tracking thing is a great idea. I would also recommend people check what their credit card interest rates are. Even with an excellent credit score, they are more than 16%. What a wealth destroyer! Thanks for all your inspiring videos and encouraging words. We can do this!!
Plan over feelings absolutely ❤, if one gives in its childish !!! Adults have to Disapline themselves to live in a life of Frugality ❤ Live Below your Means. ❤ DONT FALL ❤
Sticking with the plan. Oh yes, the wanted trip to the apple orchard for fruit (pantry stock up) & snacks will wait til I've got that cash set aside, 😆..
Thanks for the reminder. No spend weekend keeps me on track. 😊 Budget with a worse case scenario makes sense. I have irregular income, so I use only scheduled hrs as income & anything extra will get added accordingly. 😊
Seei am confused by the time thing. At my credit union I can go to my checking account on line. There is a filter option. Choose start date like 9/1/24 end date 9/30/24. Choose credit, there is your income for the month. Choose debit, oh look your expenses. Income less expenses. Is it positive or negative? .you can drill down later to see how the money is being spent.
The problem is not me, frugality goes out the window when I interact with people. It is slowly changing but being involved with others costs me money I don't have. Great idea for tweek budgeting. I am going to try.
At the end of the day, it’s still you choosing 😊 but I get it, it’s hard. Maybe keep your friends but find new friends who do more frugal things and that will help you start to say ‘sorry that’s not in my budget this week’
@@krystiesolfyre5340 learning I have problems with boundaries and doing things for people. I am fixing my personality and my finances at the same time. Hard to be a rich people pleaser. My love language is giving too, or I like showing I care with things. So I am learning not to and or also to make things so I am at least getting more skilled. Not everything is throwing money at things/situations. Feeling a bit stronger maybe I can make something for people etc. I liked how you said take from one area when another area needs more though. I take those feelings and relish the savings; the other half relishes the things those savings buy. But, we also look at how we can reduce our costs some where between continually and with an on-off emphasis. For example one time when coming off a period of lean with pent up needs, all but needs, wants, and a want to buy, buy, buy we decided that we would take 2 to 3 months only buying things which would save us money in the end; or "investment purchases" . In this case, it did involve the purchase of a tool because with the use that tool we could save money in the foreseeable future plus we added capability for potential future savings; that one was a router which i remember 'cause i had some (!?) doubts.
I spent a few thousand that was not budgeted for a steal surprise old Volkswagen Beetle my mechanic husband can keep running indefinitely. But we will not need to budget for another car! How many thousands we will save!
