I am having the same problem with that hum the thing is I did not have that problem before. I have 3 amps a epiphone studio acoustic 15 a crategx15R and a crate fxt30 the fxt30 is the worst. (acquired two days ago)I am wondering if the first two got the humming due to being idle several months and somehow components are dirty? I did not have any problems with fluorescent lighting. Any ideas besides buying the Hum X?Thank you

You can also strip a wire, tape one end to one of the screws and let the other end touch the ground. Maybe your amp also has a grounding pin for this. This way, whenever you put your amp on the ground, it's grounded. I super glued a grounding block so that part of it touches the ground when I keep it, and connected a wire to the block. Slightly less dangly solution. :)

I'm having a nasty buzz centered around 315 Hz, and no one seems to be able to prodive me with a straight answer of what it could be... It's not a ground loop because I've checked with a D.I. Box, so maybe EMI? I really want to fix that issue.

I did a crossover and combined my Battery Pack (Tronix Explorer XT) with my amplifier and the humming went away.
Since it's only a 10W amp it lasts quite long enough.
So that is an alternative if you have a battery pack that gives 230V but the battery pack is more expensive than a filter but it is an option.

I had put an undersaddle pickup and a positive pre-amp for my nylon guitar. For some reasons I had to solder a 2.5mm plug which connects to the pre-amp. Since day one hum was always there. I did not know until today when I used a piece of aluminium foil to wrap around the jointed. Now the hum has gone.

I have atrocious ground loop hum at my amp's input, when i use the dirty channel. It goes away completely when I use a wireless system. But when i use any cables with any guitar, doesn't matter if there are pedals in between or not, there is atrocious hum. it's not an amp issue because the noise goes away completely when i use a wireless pack. there is some kinda ground loop happening whenever i use physical cables of any kind and it's driving me crazy because i can't use wireless with everything i want to use. If I go wireless to my pedals, and plug the pedals into the amp with cables the hum returns. please help

I have a marshall MG 30CFX AMP. IT STARTED buzzing and humming about a month after I bought it from a pawnshop. I hooked a ground loop connected to the ground pole on the cord. An to the guitar cable input casing. Made sure all the knob's were turned down to 0. Pushed the power button on an slowly turn the knob's up to about 5. On clean. I was amazed it worked. Then I pushed the Crunch button.
The buzzing humming came back. So
I turned it back to clean an the buzzing humming went away. Any ideas what might be wrong.

I have the 60hz hum on my 25R Fender amp just from the guitar to it. I touch the strings on the guitar, and it goes away (or any metallic part of the guitar). I checked and the ground from the cord has continuity to the input jack so I am stumped. Since it is just the amp there can't be a ground loop so even more stumped.

I myself have gotten into making fx pedals an am looking towards a boutique tube amp build in the near future... It is a great idea I am assuming is/ was yours. An if it works, hell, I can think of a hundred times it would have helped my old band. From practice in various places to studios to clubs an venues! Lets push it deeper into the market so we can can get that price down. You can sell a thousand an make gross $75,000, or sell a million at $25, an well... You where where I'm going with this. If its attainable to kids in their bedroom, it could become a staple piece of equipment as common as wall warts ( plugbars, whatever terminology you use lol)

I reduced a 30% by turning down the treble just a bit on the amp, and another 20% by turning down the volume down on my guitar. Much less noise when using more of the amp’s volume than using the one of the guitar. When I touch my strings or my volume knob on the guitar, that helps a lot too! I did build one for my expensive computer/stereo/tv equipment by drilling a hole in the wall, using a thick wire and running it from ground on the outlet into a metal stake in the ground. But I have a lotta noise in my music studio, and no ground. And where the outlets are, can't really make a custom ground easy. My half stack will just HOWL violently at high volume when not strumming.

HI yall, I use single coils so i get hum, one thing helped ( i think it was ground loop noise...): I put all the pedals and the amp into the same power outlet from the wall, another thing is on the way: EHX Hum Debugger, which is designed to help with single-coil hum, so there! ( I dont like the sound of the noiseless pickups so much, lets see what the Debugger will do...!!!) of course I could buy minihumbuckers, but for my three superstrats it would be very costly (six pickups!), instead of that i have yet another thing coming: Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster for humbuckish tones! so, all in all I have six pedals each having their own adapter , not too much methinks ... ( omg some people have amp stacks, but you have the effects stack!!! im so happy with my six pedals on the floor, like 40 € each, Duncan and EHX over hundred, hope theyll do their job...) Happy humming your favourite tunes...!!!

Then I plug my TT and yamaha receiver which both have 2 prong plugs into the surge protector. I get an awful hum when I plug RCA cables from TT into my phono port of receiver and that's where I get the hum. How would I go by connecting the Hum X in this setup?

Bob, I have a brand new Marshall DSL 40c Tube with a brand new Jackson Soloist Pro guitar. I know it is not my equipment because I have no static hiss at my friends house and it's brand new (less than 1 week I have had it)
My problem is not that I get a hum. The problem is I get bad Hiss. On the clean channel it is not as bad, but when I turn volume up on amp or switch to the dirty channel it is horrible. I run a GE7 Boss EQ as well and the Pedal magnifies this and makes the hiss so bad I can't even use the pedal at all. I noticed if I unplug the power adapter from the wall going to the pedal it gets better. I am plugging amp and pedal into same outlet. Amp on top and pedal on bottom. I tried plugging in the pedal to another outlet across the room and it made the amp worse still.
This pedal works fantastic at my friends house and not an issue. Now I know it is not just the pedal. The problem is still in the amp when it is plugged in without pedal, but it just isn't quite as bad. It has to be a issue with the power in my house cause everything sounds fantastic at my friends. Also I just ordered a Line 6 Helix so I'd really like to get this fixed so I can record with it.
Will the HumX work for bad Hiss or just hum which I don't have? Also could it be that my problem is not a ground loop, but a voltage problem. Do I need a voltage regulator? Or will this HumX work for my situation?

    • @BobSell

Justin, the HumX is only for ground loop problems with USA 110 volt power. To test this get the 50 cent adapter to lift the ground that I show in the video and plug in your amp. Talk to the folks you bought your new amp from and they may have some suggestions for using other types of power filters. Good luck.

    • @BobSell

It doesn't matter what guitar or what amp you have. It works for ground loops. My best guess for the low rating on Amazon is that people are buying this for general hum or noise that is not related to a ground loop. This will not work to reduce guitar or amp noise that's not related to a ground loop!

Victor, you can not have a ground loop unless you have 2 pieces of equipment connected together that both have a ground (3rd prong plugged into power). If your MAC is the only thing plugged in, no ground loop is possible. Hope this helps.

Two nooby questions. What is a ground loop and what does lifted mean?

    • @BobSell
      @BobSell  7 років тому +1

It's more technical and complex than I can explain so you can do some research if you need more information. But in its simplest form, here's the best I can do: most of your equipment will have a third prong on the cord when you plug in to a power outlet. The third prong is connected to a ground that it's there for your safety. When connecting two pieces of equipment together, like with a guitar cable, that both have a ground can create a ground loop. A ground loop creates noise and interferes with your audio. Some folks will "lift" the ground by using an adapter or cutting the third prong off of the power cord. This is done in an attempt to rectify the noise problem. Most of the time it works by illuminating the ground loop and therefore the noise. However it's a very dangerous option as it creates a shock hazard. Hope this helps.

Trying to record an electric guitar i have lots of noise. To minimize it i have to find a certain position, i have to face away from computer, hold a guitar in unnatural position (not even 90 degrees, more like 100-110 degrees), and any deviation from that "safe zone" causes noise in my headphones (monitors are off, of course). It is either with single-coiled pickups or humbuckers (the first ones, obviously, worse).
The StudioOne shows quite a high level of noise on a recording channel /quite hearable -33 to -44dB/ even with no sound coming through (when i don't produce sounds on guitar and/or when guitar is in "safe from noise" area).
I am thinking about getting Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger pedal... (?)
What would you recommend to do and what products to use?
    That's the main question.
    Also...
~ I have too much noise when i turn the mix (comp/in) knob towards instrument (1) and a very little headroom for recording, either the signal is too weak or, after moving the gain knob just one little degree, i get distortion, noise and clipping (2). It is either with single-coiled pickups or humbuckers (the first ones, obviously, worse). PreSonus iTwo has a very little headroom, but i suspect that this is not the sole cause: maybe by increasing the gain i increase the noise (interface limitations+ground loop).
    (1) - waiting for a new interface Topping E2x2 (could/can't record anything with PreSonus iTwo or, recently, SSL2...SSL2 supposed to have a very low noise, but in my case (? why) i had even more noise...returned it while i could).
    (2) - waiting for a new interface and a ground loop breaker usb power injector for the interface C-port.
For recording with a physical amp (Katana) i plan to get a Morley Humno Noise Eliminator.
DI boxes (active and passive) seems like do nothing in my case (or make things worse): Behringer active DI20 gave lots of noise; DI Dolamo a bit Increases the noise compared to direct connection (TRS a bit more compared to XLR), but in nut-shell, it does not decrease the noise.
Don't have any Gate pedal and not planning because it is tricky and i hardly play heavy music.
In recorded track the noise is increasing in quiet times.
I have a power conditioner Furman m8x, everything is connected there and it goes to one outlet. No noise-cancelling devices for pc or USB ports or 9V supply. All my guitars are in tact (grounded and shielded). The lights: no lights, some lights, big lights - not much difference.
    Thank you

Doesn't sound like a ground loop problem. Plug everything into the same circuit. If the buzz goes away you have a ground loop. Try isolating the problem by using a different guitar cord, amp, guitar, removing the surge protector, etc...

      @car_ventures 7 років тому

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply! Tried a couple of extra cables - one shielded one regular, still the same. Unplugged guitar end, buzz persisted. Unplugged from amp (guitar end still disconnected) and it went away. Plugged cable back into amp only, buzz came back. Unplugged everything from surge protector block, only amp plugged in and guitar lead plugged only into amp, still buzzing. Moved amp to a different socket, still same buzz. Interestingly turned the lights off and it mostly went away. The strange thing is, touching the cable (whichever one is used) will drop the buzz. Sadly that limits guitar playing to either strumming only or fret board only.

Here's a puzzle, Bob, on my Roland Cube Street 2 of my 6 guitars produce a pronounced ground hum, which disappears when I touch the ground sleeve on the cable. This is when I'm playing through the power brick (not grounded), not the batteries, and it's only those 2 guitars.

Was this a paid for advertisement for Hum X? Were you compensated in any way to endorse this Hum X product?

This was not a paid advertisement. If you follow my channel you know that I only recommend products that I use myself in the studio. Nor was this product given to me for free to review. I paid the retail price for this product. I've had several products sent to me that are junk and I refuse to review. Recently, I was offed a product for free if I agreed to review on Amazon. I declined as I only review products that I can recommend and use myself. Having said that, this product has a link in the video description and if you click on the link and purchase, I do get a small commission from the sale. I think it's around 5% from Amazon. Thanks for the question.

does it filter out 120 hz buzz because I am at my wits end......I have shut off everything in my house, PC, one room with flourescent lights, etc and used a 3 female to 2 prong adapter at my friends urging who has played tube amps for 30 years and nothing is working. I found a website that has the sounds of 60 hz and 120hz and the 120 is what i have.......

Steve, have you tried different guitars with the same outcome? How about a different amp? Take your rig someone else (neighbors house)? I think you can buy a 60hz or 120 hz filter if needed but I'm not familiar enough to recommend something... Good luck!
