@@scottspy Thanks! (I have a particular set of skills ... when it comes to Pop Culture. 😉) Also, I forgot to throw in Al Corley for good measure as well.
Dwight was one of those ridiculous experiments that wasn’t funny to me at the time. It was more like something they would’ve done well on Fernwood 2-Night. But now I think it’s hilarious, and Paul’s melodramatic organ intros and exits are too appropriate. 🤪
So.......Michael Zegan from Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel claims that his big break was playing Dwight the Troubled Teen on Letterman. It is a totally different dude. The guy in the sketch is easily over 20. Zegen would have been 12 in 1991 when the sketch started. Not sure what Zegen is talking about.
Yes, according to this new interview, it would have been circa 2003 (when he was 23). It apparently lasted a couple years. It would be interesting to see a collection of those. ua-cam.com/video/qfM3v9c2Dgo/v-deo.html
Chris Elliott was the go to "Running Character Guy", and Larry "Bud" Melman for longevity, but the one that stuck with me was Gus, The Gruff but Lovable forklift driver. He drove the Library Lady in and out.
I promised myself I was never going to be one of those "can you please put this one up" guys, but if you ever had the time for that, it would be tremendous. If not, that's fine too. I really just enjoy following you along with all the things you are generous to share. It is so great to be able to see "LATE NIGHT" again, the best show that was ever on TV. -- Zach Robertson
I think you said in an article that you're only missing a few Late Night/Late Show episodes. If you don't mind me asking, which ones are you still looking for?
How have those two shows managed to elude you when you have everything else? I'm sure there must be a novella-worthy story of your quest for those two episodes. NBC doesn't have them in their library?
So there’s this actor named Michael Zegan. He’s played some TV parts in Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead, etc. Anyway, his IMDB page states he made over 50 appearances on Letterman as Dwight the Troubled Teen, but it’s not this guy in this video. I wonder why?
There were two Dwights. One at Late Night, here, with Paul’s Music Assistant Chris Albers, and one at Late Show, portrayed by Michael Zegan. I have a rough, unconfirmed count of 38 LS appearances of Dwight, not “over 50.”
@@dongiller True, but I do see his point. I could easily see this on "Get a life" or coming from Elliot. Also, man, this guy's look and voice/performance are PERFECT! He's right out of a late fifties/early sixties teen movie, for sure.
looked this up reminiscing about the much less politically divisive late night comedy of the old days, more constructive, unifying, back then. Comedy should unify not divide ...?
I’ve only watched the first two, but I love how he’s just a second or two late coming out after being introduced. Nice subtle touch.
I was a troubled teen in 1991, and watching this now, it aaaaallllll makes sense.
Ok
Don Giller -- Thank you, thank you, thank you! You deserve a Mark Twain Prize yourself for putting all of these together! 🏆
I miss old Letterman shows so much! Thank God for this uploader!
Just like those hypocrites at Dairy Queen... still use that line today... Thanks Don
Resembles a cross between Willie Aames and Larry Wilcox.
Those are very specific and accurate references!

Wow he so nailed the attitude of every teenager.

Man....i miss the Letteman "era"....
Life had an entirely different vibe then
"I hate all of you"! So spot on I was almost waiting for it. 😅
Dwight is played by the fine actor Chris Albers aka Junior aka Ace aka Paul Shaffer’s assistant.
Thanks Don!
Shaffer; Paul Shaffer.
dwight will fit right in jacksonville
These are heart-wrenching :(
30 years later his children call him Dwight the Troubled Parent.
They should have kept the bit going withfirst circus then prison mail from Dwight.
Ready to feel old? It’s 2020 and Dwight the Troubled Teen is now 34 years of age
Recheck that. :)
Try 43.
He's 14 in 1991, so in 2020 he's 43, no?
Or if he was 28 like he looked in 1991 he’d now be 59 in 2022 !!!
He kicked over my garbage can, cursed at my kids, now he's yelling at clouds.
Just finished these.
I think I saw the last one as a kid.
Real jems, thanks a lot ! 👍
I needed a laugh this morning, thanks Dave, miss you so much... Please come back...
The good old days 😭
Speaking of troubled teens, it would be fun to have a Father Biff collection some time.
"I wish you'd talk to him, Paul."
Damn I remember Dwight. Good stuff
I watch this over and over, thanks Don.
I always thought this occurred much earlier in the series - like 87-88...
Nope; Chris entered Late Night’s orbit in post-strike ‘88.
Can’t believe he got away with calling David Letterman a “squirrel head”.
they did stuff like that all the time. Dave had a very troubled relationship with himself.
I m a huge fan. Thanks for the video.
Those Dairy Queen hypocrites are the worst. Poor kid...
I'd forgotten all about poor Dwight.
I wonder if Dwight was ever able to turn his life around and snap out of that attitude? "Where are they now?"
Just once give him a Snickers.
Dunder Mifflin-Sabre
Dwight the troubled teen is now a member of Antifa
He and Dave should do something now where he is still living at home and Dave and Paul are trying to turn his life around
Those hypocrites down the Dairy Queen are the worst.
The "damn it!" at 10:17 is perfect
My favorite was Kyle, the intern. A bitter, sarcastic smart-ass. An "intern" for 15 years and resented Dave so much!
Yes, Kyle was funny
Lyle the intern.

Thanks Don!! Been waiting for this. :)
This bit is AWESOME lmao. I didnt begin watching Letterman until about 93'...94' so, I missed this bit. Lol.
Dwight played by a very young, very talented, Bobby Moynihan
Nope. Read the description.
Albers was a really nice writer at Conan! I thought that this was him.
A new running character that comes out and gives Letterman shit. XD
He's troubled because he looks 28, and everyone's after him to buy beer.
I can picture Billy Eichner doing this character

That guy looks a lot like a young Ryan O'Neal.
When I saw the clip roll by, I thought Will Ferrell.
Tony Dow grown up.
I remember he took that character over to "Friday Night Videos" (later "Friday Night").

May have been referring to a different Dwight on Late Show rather than this Dwight (Chris Albers) on Late Night.
Don Giller Thanks Don. I knew if anyone could solve this, it would be you.

I think his last appearance was his best! The character still had legs.
Sure hope Dwight didn't get killed during a prison riot anywhere.
"..maybe I'll get into crime and alcoholism!"
LMAO
"I hate you! I hate all of you!"
Today's troubled teens were not like the great troubled teens of 1991.
Chris Elliott was the go to "Running Character Guy", and Larry "Bud" Melman for longevity, but the one that stuck with me was Gus, The Gruff but Lovable forklift driver. He drove the Library Lady in and out.
Lyle the Intern was always awkward, cringe-inducing fun.
@@Jerry-Falwells-Poolboy Today I look on UA-cam. top row, Bookmobile lady and Gruff but Lovable Gus! LOL!!
At least he wears a Letterman jacket.
What happened to the big letter "T" that was on the jacket?
Thanks, Don. Awesome as always. Keeping with the topic of troubled people, do you have ‘Dale, the Psychotic NBC Page'? Just curious.
Of course.

"Just like all those hypocrites down at the Dairy Queen." 🙄
The only question is, "Whose relative is his on the show?" Unless this was community service.
Assuming it’s a serious question, Chris was at the time Paul’s first music assistant. He later wrote for Conan for a long while.
“This is gonna be a running thing on the show now?

I hate those hypocrites at the Dairy Queen.

I think you said in an article that you're only missing a few Late Night/Late Show episodes. If you don't mind me asking, which ones are you still looking for?
February 25 and March 16, 1982. I have segments for each but not the complete shows. All other Late Nights and Late Shows are complete.
How have those two shows managed to elude you when you have everything else? I'm sure there must be a novella-worthy story of your quest for those two episodes. NBC doesn't have them in their library?
A long, boring story. Maybe someday I can explain.
I wonder if Letterman will access this channel at some point. Can you imagine? He probably forgot most of it.
He has trouble operating a telephone. :)

Francesco Centeno.

Larry Graham, I believe.
