Dr Pitre really doesn't know anything but Catholic Doctrine and Tradition which are severely lacking truth.
Most university English literature programs include Milton's "Paradise Lost," which deals with the fall of Adam and Eve. Yet I've never seen one that included the "rest of the story" by Milton, "Paradise Regained."
For God's sake, it's Dante's Inferno and Paradisio all over again!

Jesus as the new Adam undid the faults of the old Adam.
Why did the old Adam have faults? How does something that is "all-good" produce something that has faults? Didn't God know what would happen? I thought he was all-knowing... And why did Jesus wait so bloody long to do something about it?
First God let people sin without telling them what they were doing that was ticking him off so much that he drowned them all, then for the few survivors, instead of taking care of Original Sin at that time, he let it continue, but again failed to tell them what it was they were doing that was ticking him off, until finally we get the mythical story of Moses and the Exodus... He finally tells folks what they are doing that ticks him off, but it doesn't change much. He's still sending them to Sheol where they are dead. In those days he punished people during their lives or those of their offspring to the 3rd and 4th generation, but left them alone when they died and went to Sheol.
Finally, over a thousand years later he decides to do something about all this by sacrificing himself to himself, but only offering salvation to those who believe this fanciful story. Now, instead of simply being dead in Sheol, we are to be tortured for eternity in flames for eternity, for failing to believe the fanciful story that is presented to us with no compelling objective evidence. How is it that our situation has been improved?
@Patrick Montgomery prove I'm wrong. Prove the prior existence of Adam. Prove the existence of your God, or at a minimum provide just a shred of compelling objective evidence. If God's plan is "Secret" why do you know about it? Prove the existence of Moses and provide evidence for the Exodus as described in the bible.
When you are able to achieve this, go to Stockholm to pick up your Nobel Prize. When you call someone "wrong" you had better be prepared to back it up, otherwise you can be dismissed out of hand... @@truthbetold8610 well, first - there was no Adam and Eve. Evolution and DNA evidence make it pretty clear that we evolved from a pool of early ancestors and not a single breeding couple. However, the mythical story does not demonstrate free will. First, the kids could not know that disobedience was wrong until AFTER they ate of the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. Until one has "knowledge" of good and evil, how can one have the free will to choose between the two? God punished them because the talking snake shamed him. He said they would die on the day they ate of the fruit - but the snake said otherwise and the snake told the truth. The snake told them that God didn't want them to eat of the fruit because then the humans would know good and evil like the gods. Gen 3:22 confirms that again the snake was right, and told the truth. Gen 3:22 is a warning to us that evil gods lie in the pages ahead...
If you read the entire bible, you will find very little support for free will. Yahweh is constantly hardening hearts, sending good or sending evil, controlling events, controlling humans.. there's so little free will in the bible, that the Sadducee's didn't even believe in free will, and the Pharisees believed it was limited. Most denominations of Christianity (aside from Calvinism), believe in free will, otherwise that makes God a heck of a monster, sending people to eternal torment... but if he knows all things, then we don't have free will. If God knows what is going to happen, then nothing we do can change that. If we could change the outcome by praying or whatever, that would mean God was not all-knowing. If God knows all things, he can't even change his own mind, otherwise it would mean he didn't know all things.
Whether humans actually have some degree of free will, or whether the universe is deterministic, is yet to be determined.

I don't really understand Paul when he says that "[13]Sin already existed in the world before there was any law, even though sin is not reckoned when there is no law."
Was the sin of Sodom in the time of Lot not reckoned? Or does he mean it was suspended?
And while he says that the sin of Adam causes death to spread through the whole human race because everyone has sinned (because the sin of Adam make sin came into the world through him and through sin death) it is however clear that the work of Jesus didn't change the consequence of the original sin for the new births of the humanity under the New Alliance but that the justification Paul speaks of comes through faith in the work of Christ and not directly as a consequence of this work like it was for the original sin. So that overwhelming God' grace only reveals itself through faith in the work and not by inherently changing the human condition who is still under the original sin.
This state of things brings forward a kind of principle of merit but only based on a sincere openness to receive god's grace and faith in Spirit and in Truth.

sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.
it seems like youre taking the verse out of context. anyways, sin means breaking the law, so if theres no law theres no sin. original sin, however, is because adam (our ancestor) sinned so his nature became corrupt and died. and thats what we inherited, death and corruption.

To make a Mountian out of a molehill you were the one who’s chain got pulled for some reason. I simply asked a question; if this was not the place to ask them simply say so do step up and show your intelligence and say my question was nonsense !!!!!!
So when Christ was resurrected and went up to the sky while the Apostle's were witnesses in essence Christ defeated Death and Sin. Which could be Spiritual and physical death but as well as sin since he never sinned and was the perfect sacrifice to pay for all of our sins? Then the only thing left to do is for us to follow Christ yet we still sin when sin is no more because Christ defeated it..so how should we carry ourselves? At what point do we stop fighting against each other and instead start helping each other? I still can't believe God is so great and perfect that he'd want someone like me a wretched sinner who instead of doing good does bad and in doing so is always going back to him because fear is in me and my God is just to punish me yet I believe Christ died for me so I try to stop sinning but it is so difficult not to sin. If Christ gave his life for us on the cross then shouldn't we as well give our life on the cross for others? Meaning we should serve others including our enemies with a humble heart and many graces?
In my opinion , Salvation is a process, we need to humble ourselves, everyday we receive test from God and in the test he shows us where we're failing so we confess our sin, we realize our sin and we get in the process of purification, that's why we have to die every day ( to deny the ego ).
Everyday is a blessing, where we can improve on ourselves, not alone but guided by the Holy Spirit.
We don't just accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, we also have to fallow His Commandments.
Find a Traditional Catholic Church and find a good priest wich has the patient, ask him to help understand.
And don't rush in judgement, but seek transformation.
I'm a newcomer to Catholicism ( traditional ) and I'm not Catholic yet but I'm transforming slowly everyday.

This is called "Way of the Cross" and this is the only way for us to enter God's Kingdom, there's no other way.
Adam in the garden does not have a cross, Adam & Eve live in a paradise where there's no suffering, it is a land free of the Cross.
Adam must grow in "Wisdom" in the garden like Jesus thru a life of "Obedience in order to reach theosis or divinization.
Jesus did it for 18 years, a life of obedience to Joseph & Mary and a life of obedience to God's Will.
Adam had only to follow God's Will and no one else...Adam failed and did not grow in Wisdom, while Jesus grew in Wisdom.
Jesus came to show us the way to Heaven, and it is called the "Way of the Cross"..."obedience thru & despite of sufferings even unto death". Because only thru death that we can enter into a new life an eternal life..death on Cross..We must imitate and become like Jesus...as St.Paul said "it is no longer I who lives but Jesus".

Because women were chattel - property.
Because life force is in the man's sperm, not the woman's egg. If Adam had not partaken of the fruit God could have created a different woman for him and most likely Eve would die.
However God would have handled it , mankind would have not been imperfect since Adam would have not sinned.
@@truthbetold8610 sorry, but there is no such thing as a "life force." Life is a process, like the flame on a candle. Blow out the candle, where does the flame go? Nowhere. The process of rapid oxidation simply stops. Same with life. When the process stops, the life ends.
However you are correct that the ancients believed there was a life force, and they believed that the woman merely carried the man's seed, so they believed original sin passed from the man, through the process of sexual intercourse (which helps explain why the Church is so obsessed with sex.
When they learned in the 1800's that women contribute half the genetic material, they had to change the status of Mary, because she would have gotten original sin from her parents who did the naughty deed, and would have passed it to Jesus. The Church decided in 1854, with no good biblical support, that Mary had been born without original sin.
Of course, if God could remove or prevent original sin in Mary, he can remove or prevent it in all of us - but apparently he prefers the Rube Goldberg convolution of impregnating a young woman with himself so he could be born as himself, so he could sacrifice himself to himself, to remove a condition he placed on us in the first place, and which he was able to remove or prevent for Mary with a wink and a nod.
It's all incredibly unbelievable, and for failing to believe this fanciful tale, the Church tells us we will burn forever.

Do you think God is incapable of producing Jesus as a perfect, sinless human from a woman who is a sinner like everyone else? If so, you have a narrow view of the one who is all powerful.
As for burning forever, you can forget that lie, there is no such thing as fiery hell, I don't care what the Church says and what incorrect translations they put in their Bible, it simply isn't true.
@@truthbetold8610 can you provide a link to a source that says science admits life is in the sperm, not the egg? This source will need to define what it means by "life" to begin with. Is the "process" of the sperm entering the egg, the impetus for life? Perhaps so, but without the combination of the two creating a particular process of replication, there is not going to be any life. If life does start, it will continue until the "process" ends.
Frankly, I don't believe in the myth of Mary, I think she was invented by Mark, the first gospel writer, and then embellished by Matthew and Luke. Mark knows nothing of virgin births and John votes no, given that the probably understood the original word referred to in Isaiah referred to a "maiden" or "young woman," not a virgin. The author would have used the word "betulah" instead of "almah" if the actual virginity mattered. (Of course Isaiah 7:14 has nothing to do with messiahs in any case). Paul certainly knows nothing of virgin births, and he's the first author, the one closest to the events in time. After the first page of Acts, she completely disappears from the scene. (Along with Pilate's interest in an empty tomb!). I also don't believe in original sin, or a fall from grace. There is no identifiable event in our evolutionary history to confirm this metaphorical story. Our DNA tells us that humans evolved from a pool of early ancestors, not a single breeding couple. And of course, snakes don't have vocal cords!
As for burning for eternity, I agree. The bible is pretty clear that we will be consumed, destroyed, burned up... in short, as John 3:16 says, we will perish, and to perish is to die. I also know there are four very different words (Sheol, Hades, Tartarus, Gehenna) that the Church translated to the pagan word, "Hell," none of which is the Hell we think of. However, it must be admitted that most Christian denominations believe in a literal place of hellfire. Most Christians worship an evil god and apparently don't realize it.
Original Sin, what is the mystery behind this?
If we look at some of the prominent paintings, one must look at the "womb" of Eve, it is covered with leaves and some painted it with some branches or stems coming out of the womb of Eve. How do we interpret this? The womb of Eve is the symbol of the "Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil". And the womb of Eve can bring fruit thru "procreation".
In contrast, the Tree of Life is the prefigurement of Mary and Her fruit is Jesus Christ the source of "eternal life".
Now, how do Eve fall into the serpent trap?
The serpent "beguiled or deceive" Eve that She can produce a "fruit or an offspring" and this "offspring" is the most pleasing offering to God instead of the "work of their hands".
Adam & Eve is glorifying God thru the work of their hands by preserving & guarding God's creation. But the serpent "beguiled" Eve that a "child or an offspring" is the most pleasing offering to God. And so, Eve ask the serpent how?
The serpent now "touch" the "sacred womb" of Eve, the serpent had "defiled" the sanctity of the womb of Eve. And we can see this from the punishment the serpent had received, God said "because you have done this or because you have "touch" the womb" of Eve by your malice, God not only cursed the serpent but God removed some of the power of Satan by removing his arms & legs a symbol that Satan power had diminished.
What is the effect after the serpent had touch or defiled the sacred womb of Eve? Eve lost the "garments of light", and she appeared to Adam in a defiled state....
If you were Adam what would you do, if you see Eve the one you love in that defiled state?

The punishment of Eve is with regards to procreation, what do you think happen to Eve?
In the secular world, the famous phrase "never been touch" means the woman is still a virgin.
The serpent cannot tempt Adam to fall, why? The "Light of God" emanates powerfully to Adam while satan can only produce a "false light". Adam's "Light" is more powerful than Satan before the fall. How about Eve? God did not breath in the Holy Spirit to Eve, Adam "lay his hands" to Eve because Adam is a High Priest an Overseer or a Bishop. Adam has the power to confer the gifts of the Holy Spirit and he anointed Eve to become deacon or a helper. Adam is a High Priest because the "garden of eden" is the Temple of God.
Adam & Eve was 'offering the work of their hands & glorifying God in His creation" in the garden of Eden, which Lucifer once guarded before his fall.
Satan saw that Eve has less light compare to Adam (see Ven.Agreda and Blessed Emmerich vision), and so, Satan device a strategy how to deceive Eve, how?
By offering Eve how to gain "wisdom", What is "wisdom"? God had shown to Lucifer in the Heavenly Realm His Divine Plan for the Logos, the Word will be incarnated to a Woman, and Satan deceive Eve that She is the Woman who will give birth to Jesus the "Wisdom of God". (1Corinthian1:24 to 1Corinthian1:30).
Eve saw how enticing the serpent suggestion is, and so, she entertain how she will give birth to Jesus the Wisdom of God.
Now, the serpent purpose is to defile the "pure womb" of Eve because God had not yet told Adam that it is now the perfect time to "procreate", Adam & Eve must undergo "theosis" first.
But since, Eve fall into the trap of satan, Eve had allowed satan to caress her pure womb...(see Valtorta's writing).
That's why St.Ambrose and St.Augustine had reflected on the original sin, that original sin involves "lust" or concupiscence of the flesh.
Now what is the original sin? Catechism of the Church CCC400 stated it was "marked by lust".
@@jongricafort4 you need to study the real bible. Don't assume ANYTHING that it doesn't specifically say. Otherwise you just get 20 thousand religions each with their own ideas. Bible is the word of God, and if God didn't say it, i GUARANTEE it's not something that matters.

Sorry the True Jesus Christ founded a Church and did not leave the apostles with a bible. Jesus commanded the Apostles to preach and not based their teaching on the bible because the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth dwelling in them is the one who will testify about the TRUTH.
Peter is the Vicar of Christ and the only one whom Jesus entrusted His Keys to His Kingdom.(Matthew16:19)
St.Paul recognized Peter's Authority and not only Peter but also James and John that's why in Galatians2:8-10, St.Paul acknowledging that he was baptized under Peter's authority had to seek the "right hand" of this three pillars.
Sorry, St.Paul is united with Peter and all the Apostles. So, all the Christians denominations like St.Paul must humbly submit to the authority of Peter the Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church the People of God. Tell your Pastors to embrace Ecumenism like St.Paul did.

Adam, a perfect man sinned and was sentenced to death. His children, namely us, inherited that imperfection.
God sends his son from heaven to be born as a human and end up as a perfect man as Adam was.

Jesus gives his life to pay off Adam's sin's penalty. This releases all Adam's children from this imperfection of being born just to age and die.
John 3:16 'God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten son, so that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.'

The words for death and hell in the Greek were those used by Jews and Christians to refer to the place of the dead in general (including purgatory), not the hell of the damned. Therefore, the idea is that these places are no longer needed, only one place of the damned.
Death & hell appeared a separate word and have a different meaning. When we speak of first death, it means we lost Divine Life, a means to participate in a Divine relationship which Adam & Eve enjoy in the garden of eden. To restore Divine Life in us because all of us inherited spiritual death by contracting original sin thru Adam, we need to receive Divine Life or sanctifying grace to purify or heal our soul, it's like once again God "breath-in" the Holy Spirit in us for us to become a "living soul".
How about the second death? Since all of us contracted the orginal sin, we are all "spiritually dead" meaning we have a soul but it has no Divine Life or sanctifying grace.
Now, if we do not receive baptism either thru the Catholic Church or other means God mysteriously provided like in some of our Christian brothers faith, then we will die without "Divine Life" in us. Our destination is "hell" a place wherein the people have rejected the "Mercy of God" thru the offering of Jesus Christ redemption and teachings on salvation.
Since our soul have no "divine life", it has suffered the "first death", and if we reject the Mercy of God which God is offering up to our last breath, then we deserve to go to hell as hell is the rejection of the Mercy of God. Then our soul who had suffered the first death will now be thrown into the "lake of fire"...the torments the soul had to suffer in this lake of fire will bring the "second death" which is a "death of soul", but they say the soul in hell will suffer for eternity...so the second death really does not exist...unless "torments in the lake of fire" is enough to kill or bring death to a soul.

What's not made clear here is how this "original sin" passes on from generation to generation. Are you saying that we are all Adam's biological children? Or are you saying that despite the fact we hold no biological link to Adam we still somehow inherit that sin. If that's the case, how are we inheriting it (if not through a biological link)? Did God create other people alongside Adam who were guilty of the sin in a story we never heard? Or did God make people with the sin just built in, no need for the Garden or fruit?

There is no original sin! We are not innately bad, but the opposite, we are innately good; but we have an ego that causes us to see ourselves separate, lacking and at odds with life and others; at odds with Love, so we behave badly. But we are not bad! We are mistaken, we misunderstand life.
Everyone has an ego, and it is not of Love. The ego is also not evil, although it is behind all acts we would consider evil.
The ego is not a thing or an entity, it's just programming to take care of number one. This programming causes us to be self-servicing, self-centered, fearful, distrusting, defensive and aggressive.
The ego is a sense of self, not something real or true. A sense of self is nothing tangible, nothing that can't be fairly easily overlooked, if its lack of realness is pointed out.
The ego is programming that causes us to see life, ourselves and others through a particular lense; one tainted by fear, judgment, limitation, smallness and a sense of lack.
The egoic programming creates a sense of being under attack or threatened by others and by life. The ego is in fear much of the time, and therefore divorced from Love.
This fear is an illusion, an imagination of something fearful in the future; not based on an actual threat in the here and now.
When we're identified with this very primitive part of ourselves, we believe in the ego's fears and try to protect ourselves any way we can; usually by trying to attain more wealth, comfort, power, security, control, success, popularity and admiration; all things that make the ego safer, at least temporarily.

He's talking about Adam and Eve as though they were real people? I thought the Catholic Church accepted evolution.... According to DNA evidence, we evolved from a pool of early ancestors, not a single breeding pair. And what could evolving humans, who woke up every morning on the menu, do to tick off an all-powerful god who presumably can't be hurt, to such an extent that he would curse all of us for something we had nothing to do with? Was it attaining a certain level of conscious self-awareness? No? How about learning to make fire and use tools? No, it had to be learning to talk that really got the Big Guy's panties in a wad!
And what's with all this talk of Jesus coming to save all of mankind? The Church is pretty explicit in telling us we have to believe, say and do the right things in order to be saved. This so-called salvation is conditional on believing a fanciful tale that breaks the laws of physics.
And what are we being saved from? The Church translated four very different words to the pagan word, "Hell." Those words are Sheol, Hades, Tartarus and Gahanna. Look them up. They are all different, and none of them are the Hell we were indoctrinated to believe in. And what's with the contradiction? The Church says we go to Hell, a place of fire, if we don't believe, say and do the right things, but the talk here is all about death. The bible tells us that Hell and its fires are eternal, but it says nothing of ongoing punishment for humans. We are to be consumed, destroyed, burned up - it's right there in John 3:16. If we don't believe the right thing we perish. We die. So what's up with all this talk of eternal torment from the Church? Where did that come from?
When I was a young Catholic lad, I was informed that in Hell my skin would be burned off, sizzling like a piece of bacon thrown in an excessively hot frying pan, and that it would constantly be replenished from below so that I would scream in agony for all eternity. (They didn't bother to note that the human consciousness can only survive that kind of pain for a matter of seconds before it blanks out).
What I want to know is - when is the Catholic Church going to formally apologize for all the psychological abuse they heaped on impressionable children before they were capable of critical thinking?

@@alejandrocanela691 No. This is a valid question. Genesis 3 is part of the larger context of Sin stories. Adam is a type of all of us. We too find that evil can be attractive, that today the earth rises up against us as in the Flood by our lack of care for it, that the sin of patriarchy when Adam names Eve as he named the animals, that nations are divided as in the Tower of Babel. The sin at the origins that we call Original Sin is our own personal journey but for the love of God start using Original Innocence for an infant until the child becomes capable of making moral choices and as for Original Sin being passed on through the sexual intercourse of the parents this is a revolting denial of a God given goodness. The stories are to explain realities; we are all Adam and Eve, when we have maturity to choose the evil or the good.

It's my understanding that Mary had to be a virgin so as to avoid passing on original sin to Jesus, a byproduct of sexual intercourse and a possible explanation for the Church's obsession with all things sexual. At the time, they didn't understand that women contributed 50% of the genetic material to the offspring, so they thought the woman simply carried the offspring, and therefore didn't contribute to the original sin herself. Then in the 1800s they discovered that women contribute half the genetic material, so that meant Mary, whose parents would have passed original sin on to her through their sexual relations, had original sin whether she was a virgin or not, and would have passed it along to Jesus. What to do, what to do? The Church decided, in 1854 if my memory is correct, that Mary was born without original sin, thus solving the problem.
Jesus had to be born sinless, the first man since Adam to be born that way, and the only way to do that was to make sure Mary didn't have the curse of original sin. The bible, of course, says nothing of any of this.
The problem with the Church's solution however, is that it strongly suggests and implies that Yahweh is fully capable of removing or preventing original sin for Mary, and if he can do it for her, surely he can do it for everyone. If he can simply snap his fingers and remove or prevent original sin for Mary why does he rely on the convoluted Rube Goldberg contraption of impregnating a young virgin* with himself so he could be born as himself, so he could sacrifice himself, to himself, in order to relieve us of a condition he placed on us in the first place? That's the best an all-powerful god can come up with? Sorry, I'm not impressed.
*Note that the idea of Mary's virginity is based on an incorrect translation of Isaiah 7:14. The word "almah" means young woman or maiden - not virgin. The author would have used the word "betulah" if sexual status actually mattered. The passage out of Isaiah has nothing to do with messiah's to begin with.

Scripts as is does not convey anything. Our mind does while reading. If you do not believe in Gen 1:1 that itself means you cannot follow the author of genesis (and rest of the Bible) as the authors wanted to tell about God, the only real thing which happened to be a person and everything else are His ‘live’ work. If at all an iota of truth in your accusation on God, you would have long dead using the same freewill God has given. The difference is that such a utopian life can only provide by the same God, and as things stands, there is a way God offers to fetch that life.

The concept of the soul separating from the body at death is a Catholic invention. The bible does not say that the soul leaves the body at death. The bible says that when a person dies the breath of life leaves the body and the person is completely dead. At creation God created Adam with two parts: body and breath of life. If you destroy one of those you no longer are a living soul.
Origin sin is a heresy. Adam and Eve were not under a covenant to transgress against god. Therefore, to disobey is not sin, since sin is transgression against God’s covenant. Therefore, there was no sin law to sin, there was no repentance.
You are mistaken about there not being a covenant between God and the first humans. Read Genesis 2: 15-17 and all of Genesis 3.

@Patrick Montgomery perhaps you are unaware that the Church has accepted the reality of evolution through natural selection. You may also be unaware that the Church is wrestling with DNA evidence that tells us that we almost certainly evolved from a pool of early primates, not a single breeding pair.
If you'd like to proclaim that the Church is wrong in accepting evolution - which indeed has created quite a problem for them, one that fundagelicals shied away from when they realized the implications, then by all means take it up with the Church.
Evolution pretty much does away with the "original sin" story. If humans evolved, what did our struggling ancestors do to tick off the Big Guy? They woke up every morning on the menu, struggling to survive another day and hopefully reproduce and pass on their genetics. What was their original sin? Attaining a particular level of self-aware consciousness? Learning to use tools and make fire? Oh, I know. What really ticked off the Big Guy was when they learned how to talk. That MUST have been the original sin, given that Yahweh who named himself "Jealous" must have really been torked when people began talking about things and people other than him!
