Brilliant, simple fixes, huge improvement...! love the serviceability of the vintage gear, they don’t build them like that anymore. Thanks for sharing.
Nice work - this'll come in handy when I finally get round to sorting mine out, it has really scratchy sliders after being out of use for too long. Been meaning to do the VCF CV in mod - the noise mod looks good as well.
Great video! My sh-09 is visually almost mint, inside too. BUT there is no sound from the VCO and sub, unfortunately. Only clicking sound when triggering, and some occasional noise bursts, and a rare blip, when pressing keys rapidly. The noise generator works and external input is ok, a bit unstable quality, sometimes more noisy and lower volume. Any idea where to begin?
oh been a while since I opened mine. I would look for a waveform from the VCO. You will need a scope or audio probe. But before all that I would check the power rails to be sure they're in spec.
hey bud, I just got an ms10 and some of the pots are noisy as hell. the guy I got it from said he'd cleaned it up, there was still contact cleaner on the outside of all the pots, but still a fair amount of crackle and noise. the keyboard is also a bit noisy. I am completely useless at repairing things. do you ever look at or service other peoples gear? im down in wicklow., so only a few hours away from you. cheers .
Brilliant video for a beginner! Held my hand all the way. My problem still persists though. The portamento is just on constantly. I’ve dismantled and cleaned the potentiometer thoroughly and it still doesn’t work. The only thing I didn’t do was apply the grease. Do I need a completely new slider or is there something further I can do? Thanks again, vid was a massive help!
The clean freak in me was looking at the slider holes and I'd have gotten in there with a tooth brush to get rid of the crud as well. I'd have also properly ripped apart the keybed to clean it and whatever was underneath. I'm surprised you didn't do the ole peroxide trick with the yellowed keys. Whenever I get an old synth I always give it a good 'bath' so to speak and clean it up. The techier stuff I leave for my actual tech, but then he doesn't have to deal with fuzz balls and the like when fixing anything that's wonky.
yea cheers for the comment. I used to go a bit mad with the cleaning, recently i've reduced this. You will be horrified at a Juno 106 video I will be putting out where I do very little :) Some customers don't actually want their synths super clean (dust bunnies are an exception, granted) plus I reasonable rates for work so I don't really engage in it as part of the service. As for the keys, i've down some in the past but like with say the Soviet Aelita, the yellow keys are part of the charm and look of the beast. Goes with the grinding synth sound it makes.
@@waheex fair enough. I guess I'm a bit OCD. I have a Yamaha CS-20M that probably hadn't been opened up since 1976 when it was built and upon opening it, it caused me synth trauma! Disco music started blaring out, people were smoking and it was as though a cat died in it with all the fluff! 😆. I thought I may have gotten dosed with qualuudes. Haha. I like my stuff looking as new and pristine as possible. I'm not a fan of patina because stuff I've bought new I've treated well.
Great video, thanks. I'm currently trying to revive an SH-09 myself. I found two caps had leaked, one in the MOD(S/H) section, the other the big light brown one in the GATE & KYBD CV section. Oddly, both were (the only ones) soldered to the transistors directly, on top of the PCB. I figured this was unconventional, and that's why the caps they leaked. But your video shows the same soldering on top in your model. I found other pictures online (studiorepair.com/gallery/Roland/SH-09/slides/Roland_SH-09_Circuit_Board__STUDIOREPAIR_07012701_0702185485.html) that do not seem to have this. Any idea on why they would do that? And could it have caused the caps leaking?
hi thanks for the comment. They maybe just had access to these capacitors and bodged them in to fit. These are polyethylene terephthalate PET or polypropylene capacitors I believe and usually pretty reliable although their tolerances can drift. It may not actually be leaking and just glue. C2 sample and hold capacitor in the service schematic. The transistor is a FET Same type in the SH-2 synth Definitely worth checking but it's probably ok and best of luck with the refurb.
great man! can i ask you an help with my Sh-2... i cant fix keyboard tuning and responsiveness (btw with an external controller it sounds perfectly.. so its just a mechanical issue due to the metals contacts behind the keys) i got a costant buzzing sound.. how can i do?
hi, could be something in the keyboard circuit. Possibly a transistor or diode. It's hard to say really. I would try testing the resistors in this circuit and then if you can desolder, check the transistors on a tester to ensure they switch. Capacitors being out of spec may cause incorrect tuning, so worth replacing any electrolytic types if there are any. You could check all the resistors on the actual keyboard assemble to make sure they all match the spec.
Hey man curious where can you find instructions on "Pulse Mod" ? I have searched high and low for that particular mod. I also own an old Roland Sh-09 : )

hi, thanks for the watch and the feedback. Yea it's a great little synth. Really like these SH series synths. The low end bass is something.

hi yes the sliders are a time consuming job, but not too taxing. The noise mod is a simple upgrade and adds a bit of extra functionality.

@@waheex Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it :)
Nice vid, I've got one of these beauties.
Keep thinking about modding it
I've also got one of your MIDI thru boxes!
great synth and lovely to work on. Thanks for the purchase!:)

there may be a transistor before the portamento slider, it may have failed or another electronic component

The ADSR of my SH09 is brokken, so I only get the "hold" function to have sound & control of the sound...
it's not a really big circuit with the ADSR I think. Maybe a bad resistor or transistor

ah I wonder exactly what that is, I am not sure I have heard of it. IT maty be some PWM mod perhaps
