It just got boring. Its still a good game from time to time. But the simplicity was part of the charm. But in order to be replayable it needed updates but the updates kinda spoiled the simplicity for me.
For me, Among Us just got too convoluted. I used to play it monthly, even weekly when I got it in 2021. And earlier, I would watch hour-long streams of this game. Then they added different roles and it just got difficult. I still watch it from time to time, but it has lost its charm.

You’re being a bit overdramatic there. It’s now 2024 and the game still isn’t dead lol. It’s not at it’s peak, but it definitely isn’t anywhere near dead
I feel like the VR game has a chance to bring it back a bit, the 3D first person aspect can change up the game and it’s harder to spam and all that with just a mic, plus vr is just really fun
As I've said before, it is a shame that the game died, but we shouldn't be sad that the glory days of Among Us are over, we should be happy that they even happened in the first place. The game will probably regain popularity at some point though, even if it doesn't last very long. Once a new update that adds something new like a new role or map releases, it will probably draw some attention back to the game, and even if it doesn't, Minecraft became popular again after a long time, so who's to say that the same won't happen to Among Us 5 to 10 years from now? I can definitely see people re-visiting the game because of nostalgia.
@Silaen Nase Yeah, of course I do. It wasn't really that long of a wait though when you take the whole history into consideration. It started out as just a vague "another map is coming, this time based off of Henry Stickmin" announcement, which meant that they were still in the very early planning stages of the map at that time and were still deciding which location from Henry Stickmin to use. Then TGA trailer which showed our first look at the map and announced an early 2021 release date, and when the game came out on Switch there was a bug that let you access the map early, and this really showed that it was definitely not ready yet, and may have even needed to get delayed. It did end up releasing on time after all, albeit on the last possible day of "early 2021" and it had a bug where ghosts could fix comms, but other than that, everything was great.
yes! this happens with every game, and also with musicians, series, books, companies... i think the developers should be proud of among us, even if relatively little people play it nowadays
Fads often come in waves. The game will probably be popular again when it becomes "retro". A younger generation of people will find it entertaining, or, like you said, people will play for the nostalgia.
we avoided all the toxicity by always keeping the games private, but eventually it grew stale - partly because of the game, but also partly because we simply started to learn each other's tells way too well. especially when the next map was seemingly forever away. its a shame though, it was a lot of fun.
Probably the reason why among us popularity decreased so fast is because we got so busy in things like school or work or maybe we got attracted with new games coming out…
I remember playing among us with my friends. We'd hop on calls and play for hours on end. Now, if anyone plays among us if they even wanted to mention it, they'd be ridiculed in a hilarious sort of way.
Among Us became popular because of how easy it was to learn and how accessible it was for everybody to play during the pandemic, but I don't think it was a game with an abundant amount of replay value. It was never intended to be played by millions of people, and by the time Innersloth started to update the game more frequently, everyone got bored and moved on.
The game dies because of people being so fucking smart in the game. They have good strategies as well as to call out the sneakiest imposters. I was once an imposter, and I won over 200 times with that role since July 2020. But 3 months ago, some guy with IQ 21 reported me for cheating (I wasn't cheating, it's just a skill), I bet he has skill issues. The Innersloth devs sided with the some guy, and banned me for 6 months. We played Hide and Seek back when they didn't add that option. And yes, I was the one who created that option for the game. Until they added that Hide and Seek, it got creepier and scarier that most people left.
@@McFwoupson Well, the name of the game alone could get the video demonetised. We all know how unreasonable and irrational the ones in charge of UA-cam are.
I remember there was this one Minecraft UA-camr who one day switched to among us. Not like they started doing it more then Minecraft, they straight up shifted to among us. Once the trend died they went back to Minecraft. It's funny how after the trend died down it's not like among us was a less occuring thing they never played it again 💀
Among Us was always a topical game, much like Fall Guys. A few friends and I predicted it would fall off quickly after streamers got bored of it and we were right. As soon as it stopped trending, it fell. With that said, it is not a bad game. It was just not going to be a lasting phenomena.
I had a short but lovable experience with among us. I started playing in July 2020 after I and all my friends got locked down, so we would have voice chats and just play together like every other night. We played all the time, but once covid restrictions loosened we quickly moved away from the game in favor of actually hanging out in person. It’s a fun game for what it is and I loved it for the time I played but that time has passed and I haven’t played in a long time now
i feel like the problem with people saying its not dead is the lack of universal definition a game with 1000 players is super dead and most people would agree and others think its only dead when literally nobody plays it which for any game that was super popular at any point is impossible
from my experiences with the game on discord, i had no idea the decline started only a couple months after it exploded, i thought the game was popular for a lot longer i started playing in september, and the game felt extremely popular and enjoyable, even though that was AFTER the decline according to this video (i still remember watching toast's first 200 iq video just days before i started playing, good times :) ) even through the year into 2021, it was still going pretty strong, and the lobbies were very high quality in terms of gameplay and how skilled the players were; you even had regulars that would sometimes host lobbies! i stopped playing after the whole account system thing, which i felt was only really to accommodate all the kids that were starting to play the game (in hindsight, the hackers were an issue, too, although in my experience it was a tolerable problem if you knew who you could trust and play with), not to mention the new map was extremely huge and hard for me to wrap my head around i came back a few months later, and the game was still going strong, but i stopped again after i picked up some other games, then school, and since then the quality of the lobbies has dropped down even more, and now the discord lobbies, which were once the most enjoyable games i've ever had, are now just like the public lobbies, whenever they do happen to show up :( also i miss the old art style and button layout :c
I really agree with the last one looking at the game in 2024 WHAT THE F- DID THEY DO TO THE TITLE SCREEN THE UPDATED CUTSCENES OF EMERGENCY MEETINGS AND BODY REPORTS FROM LIKE FOREVER AGO SURE GO AHEAD NOW THEY REMOVED THE MOST ICONIC PART OF THE GAME
I never played this game but I always confused it with the game where you run around an obstacle course. Never played that one either but they have the same simple looking potato people, which I think resonated with a nation of potato people.
At one point in my life i invited My cousins and friends to fill whole 10 player lobby. It was amazing experience. Sadly No One Ever came back to play among us. And our lobby size started shrinking from 10 to 8 to 6 to 4 to 0
my problem with it is how complicated it got. like, it was so simple, but then they added roles, hide and seek, etc. i wish it was as simple as it was back then, as it was so much fun.
i think what ultimately could have killed the game was the lack of any strategy. doing tasks was pretty much pointless because you never won from it splitting up was almost always a bad idea voting on 4 was almost always a bad idea most of the time people would just get randomly killed in a he said she said argument and impostors almost always lost, without much thought actually going in i believe the real reason it got this popular in the first place was because it was simple, ultra casual and good to play with friends while you had nothing to do in lockdown
There are actually a lot of strategies. For example, the double kill mechanic, or the self report one, or marination. Or how to guarantee win on 4 or 5 with 1 imposter. How (and WHEN) to use sabotages like door, lights, reactor etc.
I'm pretty sure it was because of the airship update, since that was the update where you had to make an account and stuff, and everything got complicated. And a lot of people just rage quit I think, or at least I did. Also I reinstalled among us a few months ago out of curiosity, and the servers are just really unstable, like there were like 5 servers worldwide, and I got errors to join them, and the same happened when you tried to make a server. Its honestly kinda sad what happened to the game
same, ive seen how quick chat and the account system flatend the game to and what made that decline of players worse is that most lobbys are empty and you can only play the skied map cuz the other maps wherent used much
@@rachelpage3095I installed the game today to play it on my phone and trying to find a server with enough people on it to have a fun game it felt like trying to find water in a desert I only found 1 everything else was dead an empty
There’s also the issue of 1) players being toxic for laughs or trolling 2) 1-4 people insta leaving when the game starts because they want to be imposter 3) new chat system decreases the fun while removing some toxicity 4) no updates, no new features, got boring
I don't think Amogus died in a bad way the game is not really build for longevity the gameplay loop and so on and there are no competitive mode or resources make it feel quite meaningless but still it's a good game to pick up occasionally.
I wouldn't say Among Us is dead it's definitely taking a hit but it's still a go to game that you can just play with your friends and i'm definitely sure it's mark still hasn't faded from the internet yet
It will be akin to Jackbox Party pack or similar games. Its fun to play a round or two for good times, but it will go back to collecting dust right after. It will simply be a fun game on the edges of gaming, with it barely staying relevant because of its huge quick success. If it had more modes quickly after launch, it could have retained some streamers and hype, but as said, Dev was hard for the game. It just does not have lasting power like other genres have, because matches can become very samey once everyone knows the maps.
Quickchat ruined among us here’s the thing THERE is censors it’s not our problems kids aren’t turning the censors on among us if they never added quick chat it would be popular
I wanted to create an Among Us lobby free of toxicity, though really having minimal experience in the world of content creation. In a world of inundated Twitch and UA-cam channels, I actually went through Discord and Steam lobbies and found a small group of strangers and regular group of players that kept coming back. By no means was I Mr. Beast, but that was my first foray into having my own community, regularly having 20-30 players a day. With the death of Among Us, as well as a new career for me, my community is all but dead now, but I was darn proud that Among Us taught me how to grow a community.
One experience that pushed my disinterest was when I tried to fake an objective as imposter at the start of the round and the round was immediately ended with me being called out. I didn't know that the particular objective I faked was one everybody had or nobody had. The relative "staticness" of the maps limited replayability. You can memorize what "makes sense" of possible actions, and there wasn't much discouraging groups from balling up as things went on. I think I and others want to play it still, but all the little things add up in making it difficult to get a proper big game going.
I honestly thought it just declined because you can only have the same dialogue so many times. The mind games wrapped in mind games, asking people specfically the tasks they did blah blah..
I don’t know about you, but in the environment I’m in, Among Us holds the role it was meant for…to be a game friends can pick up from time to time to keep them entertained to pass the time. _maybe a run-on sentence_
It was incredibly annoying having to deal with the culture of this game where everyone just said sus to everything for years. Hopefully it's finally over.

I wish UA-camrs played more in public lobbies... I like public lobbies over private ones with friends, maybe cos I have no friends... but they're also more chaotic and interesting ;(
Simple: Among Us was a fad. Just like Undertale. It became popular quickly, coined many cacthphrases and memes, but sooner or later, people will move on to the next "cool" thing, and forget all about it. It is extremely hard for any game or franchise to stay in the mainstream for more than 2-3 years. And no, making sequels usually worsen things, as most sequels are highly inferior.
Dude and we’re not going to talk about the fact that he talked about mafia inspiring the game yet there’s a whole movie that I think also inspired this game called The Thing check it out it’s a awesome movie
Among Us wasnt ruined by hacoers, it was ruined by developers. Instead of making a BETTER report system and more available in the game, avoiding comments that start with "" they just destroyed the chat feature. Now, its just boring and making people die and being impostor Remember when people cried when they didnt get impostor? Now, i ve got impostor more times than crewmate.
@@DexzlerBeing impostor isn’t any better nowadays either, you’ve gotta be very lucky to get away with murder, since you can’t debate well in the meetings because they are always fast-paced.
@@PoIarisPrime That's because among us rolled out a random name update so that every lobby name is randomized to try to prevent the role players and online daters from congregating but I think it made it worse.

I personally stopped playing when all of the hacks started happening. I was admittedly slightly addicted to the game but being locked out when they were under attack gave me enough time to stop caring and not have that burning desire to play anymore
You also forgot to mention more games started to pop up filling the role Among Us was able to do but doing it better with adding in roles, other ideas, and overall more innovative while modders had to keep Among Us innovative. A small team of modders was able to create useful classes for Among Us while said Among Us coding team couldn't.
To be honest, I very much enjoyed the game and even recently have tried to go back to it. But I left shortly after the sequel was announced, so never even knew about the hackers and such. And what caused me to leave? The children took over. Every single lobby I joined had settings set to extremely high speed, and the shortest possible discussion time. Like, it's a social deduction game, the discussion time is the MAIN part of the game. But every lobby had it drastically reduced to just run around fast and hopefully see a kill happen. Discussions were reduced to "I saw red do it" and then instant vote. No deception. It wasn't fun that way. Tried hosting my own lobbies with reasonable rules, but it took so long to find players, it just wasn't a reasonable time sink when I had little time to play. Now I play Eville, hoping it doesn't take the same path.
I remember when the game went downward, i think its on the spaceship update. Me and my friends are talking about how the update is gonna be when we update it, my one friend updated his game first and he talked about the account connecting problen in the game and we are scared not to connect the game. I think this is why players stopped playing because they can't connect their account and its not fun because you cannot chat what you like. (Sorry if i had to tell my story, Lol)
Definitely helped for the Airship that it was revealed at the Game Awards 2020 on the same day as Sephiroth was for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Gotta give it to them that it was a genius move to reveal it during an event that MANY at home would be watching. But like you said, this success was short-lived. I think just the word "sus" had a lot to do with its downfall. I mean if you kept hearing someone say "sus" to anything and everything, you'd be annoyed and think it's stale too.
I don't think Amoung us will completely die unless they have to shut down servers. I personally preferred playing with friends. As you say it's a good online 'party game'. It will never reach its peak again but I think it can stay afloat.
Every time I play among us now I just do it for ten minutes I don't have quick chat but lobbies take so long to fill that the game is basically unplayable unless you have enough friends and even if you do they all need to be available to play with
the games not really dead tho lol, sure it's not in the spotlight anymore but theres still a consistent playerbase. among us is averaging 7.5k players a day on steam, not to mention they have it on PS5, Switch, Xbox, and soon to be VR. The game isn't necessarily dead if you really think about it..

The reason I left Among Us was because it was filled with kids that didn't even know how to play the game.
exactly
Definitely agree
It just got boring. Its still a good game from time to time. But the simplicity was part of the charm. But in order to be replayable it needed updates but the updates kinda spoiled the simplicity for me.
The updates made the game complicated for no good reason. Servers still disconnect from time to time lobbies ban others for dumb reasons.
And oders and emergency spam
the quick chat being the default version while the the normal one was locked behind the account system really killed it for me
For me, Among Us just got too convoluted. I used to play it monthly, even weekly when I got it in 2021. And earlier, I would watch hour-long streams of this game. Then they added different roles and it just got difficult. I still watch it from time to time, but it has lost its charm.

The chat wheel is the stupidest decision made tbh. They should've made a filter that stops inappropriate language, certain phrases and "https"

A younger generation of people will find it entertaining, or, like you said, people will play for the nostalgia.
corny
@Silaen Nase I'm going to be real man that isn't really how minecraft caught on
we avoided all the toxicity by always keeping the games private, but eventually it grew stale - partly because of the game, but also partly because we simply started to learn each other's tells way too well. especially when the next map was seemingly forever away. its a shame though, it was a lot of fun.
I hope the game makes a comeback eventually

The chat being completely unconcensord was fun you could say whatever you wanted. Their was no accounts. Everything was completely anonymous.
Until they added that Hide and Seek, it got creepier and scarier that most people left.

i feel like the problem with people saying its not dead is the lack of universal definition a game with 1000 players is super dead and most people would agree and others think its only dead when literally nobody plays it which for any game that was super popular at any point is impossible
from my experiences with the game on discord, i had no idea the decline started only a couple months after it exploded, i thought the game was popular for a lot longer
i started playing in september, and the game felt extremely popular and enjoyable, even though that was AFTER the decline according to this video (i still remember watching toast's first 200 iq video just days before i started playing, good times :) )
even through the year into 2021, it was still going pretty strong, and the lobbies were very high quality in terms of gameplay and how skilled the players were; you even had regulars that would sometimes host lobbies!
i stopped playing after the whole account system thing, which i felt was only really to accommodate all the kids that were starting to play the game (in hindsight, the hackers were an issue, too, although in my experience it was a tolerable problem if you knew who you could trust and play with), not to mention the new map was extremely huge and hard for me to wrap my head around
i came back a few months later, and the game was still going strong, but i stopped again after i picked up some other games, then school, and since then the quality of the lobbies has dropped down even more, and now the discord lobbies, which were once the most enjoyable games i've ever had, are now just like the public lobbies, whenever they do happen to show up :(
also i miss the old art style and button layout :c
I really agree with the last one looking at the game in 2024 WHAT THE F- DID THEY DO TO THE TITLE SCREEN
THE UPDATED CUTSCENES OF EMERGENCY MEETINGS AND BODY REPORTS FROM LIKE FOREVER AGO SURE GO AHEAD NOW THEY REMOVED THE MOST ICONIC PART OF THE GAME

At one point in my life i invited My cousins and friends to fill whole 10 player lobby.
It was amazing experience.
Sadly No One Ever came back to play among us.
And our lobby size started shrinking from 10 to 8 to 6 to 4 to 0
my problem with it is how complicated it got. like, it was so simple, but then they added roles, hide and seek, etc. i wish it was as simple as it was back then, as it was so much fun.
i think what ultimately could have killed the game was the lack of any strategy.
doing tasks was pretty much pointless because you never won from it
splitting up was almost always a bad idea
voting on 4 was almost always a bad idea
most of the time people would just get randomly killed in a he said she said argument and impostors almost always lost, without much thought actually going in
i believe the real reason it got this popular in the first place was because it was simple, ultra casual and good to play with friends while you had nothing to do in lockdown

The worst and cruelest punishment for a poorly built project is success.
