Farmall M Square Baling with IH 47 Baler

I'm square baling hay today with a Farmall M and an IH 47 square baler. We ended up making 168 bales off of 10 acres of 2nd cutting grass with no fertilizer. These pieces haven't been hayed in about 5 years so all the alfalfa and good hay has died off but there's a fair bit of decent grass in it. Takes me back to 1985 in Eastern Colorado. My dad had a 37 international baler and an M. Although he never baled hay with the M, he used an international 340.

My father had a 47 baler. The knitters would tie all day long then go into a fit of not tying for several bales in a row. We added a second brake to the knotter because the vibrations would cause the needles to move causing the safety dog to break shear pins on the flywheel.

I still have a IH 47 baler with a thrower in the shed. We made thousands and thousands of bales of hay and straw every year for our dairy cows. With a decent crop, it would take about 20 minutes to kick on a load of around 100 bales. Don’t use it anymore, but it no one wants it

I have stacked hay behind JD, NH, AC, Oliver, NI, IH and Ford square balers, and all have their problems but the best experiences have always been when using New Holland but just my experiences.

IH balers have a timing hole on knotters. Loosen nut slide finishing nail in line things up and tighten. Won’t miss a bale for days.

When I was a young man first starting in the cattle business I had a #47 baler , there was an accident one day my boy fell into the #47 ! When he came out his shoes were untied

My father had a 46 T bailer. It was troublesome. We got a worn out (I still have it) 269 new holland and it worked better. We now have a 273 New holland and with plastic twine it rarely ever misses making a bale.

Theres no such thing as a good working baler I bought a new holland 69 hayline that was supposed to be field ready baled 3 balesnever baled another with it then bought 2 massey Ferguson 10 baler baled 62 bales chamber was hot as hell and stuck plunger then went out bought a 316 new holland that was field ready baled 54 bales I side of string is loose the other is perfect there all peaces of shit

I've spent close to 12k trying to bale 1.8 acreas that I own I recently said screw it bought a 1700 brush hog it works great

@@phillipmaxfield7516 The M farmall we use cost $375. the wheel rake cost $120. the international drawbar mount sickle bar mower cost $110. The 273 new holland cost $425. and we have baled more that twenty years with those .

I think it would be fair to say that NH balers are over rated

@@bradleamon4466 Possibly however the JD used the very same knotter system. So many where produced that parts are readily available. Easy to set the time and sharpen the knives ect. We now have 4 old new holland square bailes. I just bought a model 65 hayliner at a estate auction for $125. In real good cond hardly any wear. Havent tried to bale with it yet!

Hated the old 47. It kept kicking out 80 lb bales for me to pick up on the rack when I was a kid! 😂😂

Old knotters pretty much the same as a New Holland. Just have to keep them clean and greased. Knife sharp..

Boy it takes a lot of hay to make a bale I am surprised how fast you can drive and it seems very evenly timed the M isn’t even beginning to sweat! What gear are you in ?😀🇨🇦

Don't need live pto. Rake it good and it'll be fine. I use a super c and a ih 37 baler.
