I first heard this song and saw the video on a morning TV show. I was suffering horrendous drug withdrawals at the time and the song lifted me and really spoke to me. I started crying. A few years later I was clean and went to see the Pixies. Unbeknownst to me Teenage Fanclub was the support and I burst out crying again when this was performed. A truly sublime track.
One of the greatest pop songs ever written. Listening to the beautiful harmonies Badfinger’s Pete Ham and Tom Evans come to mind. Gerard Love is on another level as a melodic songwriter. Absolutely perfect.
@@NxDoyle It's still around, but it's less relevant than ever. You'll never see a band like Teenage Fanclub break the top twenty singles like this song did, the industry has changed too much for old-fashioned guitar bands to attain the levels of success they used to. That's the sad thing, not that music like this doesn't exist anymore, but that it doesn't matter anymore.
@@eilrahc__ My originally comment was that there's plenty of good new stuff out there, it may take a bit longer to discover, but it's there, and worth searching for. Commerce and so-called relevance inform my musical choices 0% of the time. If you could clarify the 'relevance' thing, I'd be more than happy to come back.
@@NxDoyle I think whether you intend them to or not, commerce and mainstream relevance absolutely do inform your musical choices, and that's not a dig at you because they do with everyone. None of us is born listening to great music, we often have to find it for ourselves, and I think the way the industry and the world has changed makes it harder than ever not just for us to find music, but for a lot of these artists to be found or even to exist. I needed the radio and television as my doorway to the world of great pop music. When I say relevance, I mean from a wider cultural standpoint. Pop culture in general has a relevance problem now and doesn't matter anymore, because of the way the industries create things and the way we consume them. It's massive and complicated, especially for UA-cam comments.
You realise as a teenage Fanclub fan or even a good music fan how essential this song is to be called an anthem. Not just a 90’s anthem but a timeless one It captures that late nineties time when vocal harmonies was still a thing With great melodies and sincere lyrics.
I was a wee lad (9-12) in Memphis when Big Star was making their first and second album, and knew nothing about them 'til the eighties. Then I heard "Bandwagonesque." Blown away. Same for this one. There's a live choral version that's really good too.
The greatest song of all time and a brilliant video - Norman and the road sign is hilarious!- Gerry’s finest ever song - he has many others but this is peerless and my favourite song of all time
ive always seen the whole of Songs from Northern Britain as TF's take on the byrds (the harmonies sound so much like any track off mr tambourine man) , grand prix being their take on big star.
One of the best "indie" songs i´ve never heard , i´ve been longtime searching it , Thank you , !!! a´ int no tired of summer , eternal summer forerver !!!!!
Im right there now. The pool is in gourock which also has a cafe called the continental cafe , which has a signed by the whole band, picture of the blur album. Donated by the guy swimming in the picture who is a cafe regular.
The truth of Teenage Fanclub, as I see it, is that they scaled a mighty Himalayan peak with Bandwagonesque (K2 perhaps), after mucking around in the foothills with their first two albums. They came down from that rarefied atmosphere with the understated (but still excellent) Thirteen, only to make the successful ascent of Everest, with their, in my opinion, bona fide masterpiece, Grand Prix (one of the greatest power pop albums of all time). Songs … and Howdy maintained the elevated standards, if not quite reaching Grand Prix’s heights. After, that, like a renegade Snow White, they drifted. Man-Made and Shadows had sublime glimpses of the old melodic magic but seemed patchy. Here, alas, again represented a decline. The new one? Jury’s out. Definite slow-burner, though. Thing is, with Grand Prix in particular, we were spoiled. I must’ve listened to that album, say, 500 times and to this day it’s as fresh and meaningful as the first listen. Not many albums do that for me.

Ecstatic pop arrangement.
Glad you got clean.
@Leonardo Vilhena Falabella Von Randow I agree 100%
The fact that you saw TF and the Pixies together is AWESOME
@@bletchdroshek5984 Imagine going to a Pixies gig and not even knowing TF was going to be support. I'd die happy on the spot.

*Raises my leg and begins kicking a corpse back into its coffin at their funeral* "GET .. BACK .. IN THERRRREEE!!!"
"NO! PLAY THE DAMN SONG!!!"

Just the most beautiful song. All their influences chewed up and bettered.
It's quite possibly the most uplifting song known to humanity, quite possibly. Those harmonies, stunning.
This song is perfection.
Some songs just lift you up.
The best of UK🇬🇧 !!!!

Big Star.
Children by the millions sing for Alex Chilton
If Pete Ham had been in Big Star instead of Badfinger, it would have sounded like this.
It's difficult to conceive of a more perfect pop song. From back in the days when pop was pop. Top, top band.
The pop we love still exists and is still being made. Y'just hafta look.

Never too late for great music
Certainly one of the best songs of the ‘90s.
My beloved Glasgow in yhe video. Amongst other's. Music to my early 20s.Summer in Scotland. 😂
Excellent harmony singing, reminiscent of The Byrds, Starry-Eyed and Laughing....
It's like one sun-drenched chorus after another. Ecstatic.
Simply the best song ever. Period. No discussion required.
This is the most positive comment section on youtube.
I agree.
I love you Qbaca.
Gerald Love songs always lift my spirit.

Inspired song from inspired band with such a great influence. I had the chance to see the live in Madrid few years ago. They still do the magic.
Pure nostalgia.... I remember as a high school student I saved 2 weeks to buy this CD back in 1996.
You mean 1997

Gary and Harry.... what a pair of stools!!! The foo fighters should be supporting the fanclub!!

This song made me fall in love with them.

One perfect song and a perfect álbum ❤
Love this song so much
The best heirs of the sound Byrds!
Jordi Pujades Girona that’s so true but they will always be the 90’s Lovin Spoonful for me ( and they say SUMMER’s IN THE CITY in this track )
Yes indeed. They are the best heirs of the Birds!
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers vie for chief heirs of The Byrds too but Teenage Fanclub are very, very good especially on the harmonies.
And Big Star
The Stone Roses 🌹 also get the tag of "influenced by The Byrds", 🕊️🕊️ fine, it's just so much better than anything contemporary.
nothing about this is bad, all good, just big star inspired genius
all the modern shiny recording techniques used nowadays and then listen to this there is no comparison
