  • The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the first lighthouse in New York State and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Come check out our tour of this great summer destination located at the eastern tip of Long Island that stands 110 feet high and can be seen 19 nautical miles away. Authorized by the second continental congress under George Washington in 1792, at the time New York was handling 1/3 of the nation’s trade with other countries and shipping vessels needed a guide along the south shore of Long Island to reach New York City and so the lighthouse was built thereafter. We'll definitely take you up to the top and also show you the museum, where you'll learn the history of the Fresnel lens, which were put in lighthouses around the world and were likely responsible for saving millions of ships. While there, other things you can do are walk the grounds of Montauk Point State Park and Camp Hero.

I've been to Montauk Point State Park more often than the lighthouse. I went to the lighthouse twice, and even took some pics from the lens area above the observation deck. Just so you know, walking around the lens area is restricted by the US Coast Guard, and the museum staff, but they have a ladder where you can climb up part of the way and get a view from there.

That is a very interesting lighthouse. My wife would love it, for sure as she is a big lighthouse lover.

It’s definitely the most famous one here. We prefer the Fire island one. If you’re ever out this way, there’s a guided boat tour that goes past a good dozen or so between New York and Connecticut

I have visited before via bicycle from New London, CT. A group of us did a century using the three ferries to get there. Great job on the video!

Thank you! And that is awesome. We’ve never gone more than 50-55 miles on a bike ourselves. That must have been a great trip. So by three ferries do you mean New London to Orient then the ferry to and then from Shelter Island, then biking to Montauk?

@@MagellanandGreyhound you are correct. We have done several versions of the ride over the years. It sounds like you might be local to along Island. They have some good mountain biking at Rocky Point.

@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA that's great! yes, we live here. We usually do videos of our vacations elsewhere, but there's plenty of good stuff at home too. I haven't done any mountain biking in Rocky Point, but that doesn't surprise me. The whole area is windy and hilly ahaha

I see WHY it's a popular summer destination. Wow.
Six inches a year gone from erosion? Wow.
The water views. Amazing. Would just want to sit there all day.
    And ice cream sandwiches!!

It’s a very nice area. It took us about two hours one way to drive there though, so if you ever go, stay a night or two. It’s not called The End for nothing lol
