    I love those birdbaths, but them and the power banks are a little too pricy for me right now. But, I have probably around 30 clay pots in various sizes that belonged to my grandmother. I am using 2 round clay pots that have baked in colors that swirl around the pots. I flipped them upside down and used a straw to go through the holes in the bottom of them like you did with that one, and the hummingbirds and other birds love them. Thank you! ❤😊😊❤

    I ordered a nice little solar fountain from TEMU for $3.49 to use off and on to attract butterflies and hummers. I have a nice birdbath I haven't used since we had mosquito issues and anything like that was banned for a while. I've had a plant sitting in it, so I figure when I'm working out in front I can replace the planter with the fountain to benefit the hummers and butterflies that come around. Hummers often drink from the hose while I'm watering.

      Please be patient. They'll come so don't give up. Not sure of your zone but I have to put my hummer feeders out in March in 7B. They scout out as they fly by and will come back around to you remembering where you are. I put out bright plastic Dollar Tree flowers and even brighter flowered garden flags to attract them, Robbie is located in a prime location for all the hummingbirds she gets. I plant flowers just for them, the bees and my rarely seen butterflies. Make sure you put feeders out too. As it was put to me, we must be good stewards for our nature friends like the birds. I only have two but maybe they'll nest and get more.

    • @PHanomaly
      @PHanomaly 3 місяці тому +1

      It can take awhile, or suddenly they surprise you. I have a daily flock of pigeons and doves who have come daily to have lunch (birdseed), and hang out around the "pools" of shallow containers of water I set out around my one birdbath, and then will all eventually take baths and preen for an hour or 2, then back for happy hour😂

      @PHanomaly 3 місяці тому

      What kind of fountains!? I would love ideas😊

    • @Robot_Cajun
      @Robot_Cajun 3 місяці тому +1

      @@PHanomaly I get a gang of 4 doves a few times a day too. They look so clumsy at the feeders…mostly due to their size I think. And they have poor eating habits - one of my feeders is a ceramic plate that came with the house (a tree grew through its hanging chains). The doves go to that feeder the most and discard empty shells into the plate instead of on the ground. I always know when the doves or the squirrels eat at the plate because of the amount of shells in it. 🤣
      I basically copied most of Robbie’s ideas for my bird baths. Before buying the pet fountains, I used 2 plant saucers with solar pumps. One saucer was large but made of thin transparent plastic like most of the inexpensive plant saucers sold in gardening centers/big box stores. It was about 1” deep and cracked after a season. My other saucer is a thicker quality plastic that I bought from A-zon. It’s about 3” deep. I placed a few large rocks in the water for birds to judge its depth and/or jump on the rocks to get closer to the water. During the extreme heat and drought last summer, I even saw a few squirrels sipping from there.
      Once I received the 2 pet fountains, I placed them at the same locations as the existing birdbaths. The pet fountain near the bird feeders is inside the plant saucer. I elevated it above the water in the saucer by placing it atop a plastic take-out container that I poked a bunch of holes into with a soldering iron. I also put smaller rocks in both pet fountains for the same reason as before. I don’t know if it matters, but my fountains get shade at different parts of the day. So they’re not blasted by the sun the entire day. Both fountains are about 3’ above the ground.

    • @PHanomaly
      @PHanomaly 3 місяці тому

      @@Robot_Cajun as I watched her video I kept trying to figure out what her point was. So, essentially, you buy pet fountains and use them as bird fountains ? Like I say, I don't have pumps in my water dishes, .. just cuz I never thought about it. But I love any water or light feature. I have a pre formed waterfall fountain from home Depot with a pump in my garden. But wondering can I just purchase the small solar pumps? I wasn't paying too much attention to all the extra stuff she was doing, so I would watch again, but seemed like a lot of hoopla for switching use of a product.

I purchased bee guards and have them installed, but it doesn't seem to stop the bees from hanging out on the feeders. I clean them and fill them daily, so there isn't a lot of sticky residue. Any suggestions? Thank you and Gary for all the great videos. I really enjoy all of them!

You just use a brown grocery bag and scrunch it up a little to make it look authentic. It worked for me. Just search on you tube.-Susan

    Robbie, I made one of these but took it down. Even in the sun and with changing the water, my pump and pot would get slimy and accumulate mold very quickly. I'm afraid the hummers would drink from it, get the mold on their tongues, and die. Is this a concern you have with all your solar pumps?

      I know what you mean.... I don't have one of the pet fountains, but I made several of the solar and power bank fountains last year and they do tend to get algae in them. I think part of it is the climate. I live in the hot and humid south. I just have to clean them out more often. I give them a good rinse with the hose and a sponge or scrubby pad. If you need to, you can also use an old tooth brush to get into the little places. Even our regular bird baths need scrubbing once in a while. Good luck! 🐦🌼🌻🦋🌺

    I’ve run into a few issues since I started trying to get some sort of fountain/bubbler going. Initially, I tried using a 5 gal. pail with a foam ball, but the pump wasn’t strong enough to push the water up from the bottom of such a big pail.
    Recently, I got a melamine bowl from Dollar Tree, put some of their colored glass gems in the bottom, around the pump, then put a terra cotta pot over it. It seemed to bubble just fine, but I noticed that the next day, water was outside the bowl on my balcony floor! I don’t understand what’s happening, because it’s not bubbling over the sides of the bowl that I can tell; when I put my hand near the water at the top of the pot, I can only feel a tiny “spit” now and then. 🤔🤔
