I just spent $44 on two new struts for our 2005 Prius but it's good to have your invention in mind in case these fail like yours did -- and for ones that weaken in the future. I've been wacked in the head a few times and it ain't pleasant. Thanks for sharing. The O-ring retainer is a great addition

Man you're a genius! the hood on our heavy equipment dumper kept falling down, only the hood was so heavy it could decapitate or break someone's neck if you had your head inside the engine when it came down, I did as you show here only out of galvinised steel pipe, but I did both struts & cut one pipe a small bit shorter than the other so if one fails the other wont, to drop just disengage the longer strut first, go to the other side disengage that & the hood comes down, go raibh mile maith agat

Clever fix. My Sorento hatch is starting to fall but the shocks still have a little push left in them. I was pricing replacement struts and really wasn't looking forward to $50 or $60 to replace them. But, I do have plenty of scrap PVC lying around. Thanks for the tip.

Just bought my stepson a used Tiburon, upon opening the hood found both struts shot. AFTERMARKET struts for the hood on a Tiburon are $78 EACH!

Note: Neither end of the shock unscrews from the shock rod itself...
I will attempt to cut a narrow elongate slice out of the PCV tube in order to force it onto the shock... I'm thinking o-rings and Duct tape to keep it from accidentally popping off due the weight of the hood when raised...
Not enough clearance for hose clamps when closed...

  • @CoastalBBQ

Nice hack. I've spent over a hundred replacing struts on a couple minivans when the kids where still at home. I was looking at spending another $48 for a set of Camry hood struts. I think I will try your fix instead. The slot+o-ring was very clever!

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 років тому

CoastalBBQ For the occasional hood opening these are great. Some hood struts are designed that you can't slip this pipe over. If yours is like this, just split the pipe all the way up and you can snap it around the strut. A little electric tape makes it look factory and keeps it from ever opening up again.

Ive got a PT Cruiser I brought a new pair of gas Support lift struts for the rear door for $27.43 New Zealand brand new from Aliexpress diidnt take too long to fit & I wasn't going to pay $80.00 each here in New Zealand for them it's crazy price here & both rear gas struts were good & wacked my head a couple of times & I've installed these ones they are great I now just lift the boot up up a little bit & the struts take over & lift it all the way up by itself the Newton metres on these struts 700 that's a lot of newton meters these rear doors on these PT Cruisers are a very heavy door to these work for me but I do like the idea what you have done by putting a piece of pvc pipe so when you open the rear door or hatch you just slide the piece of down so it catches great I dear all right & some struts can be very expensive depending on what vehicle you have & I wasn't going to pay $160.00 for a pair of rear door struts that's just a crazy price thumbs to you putting this on Utube get stuff mate give you 5 ☆☆☆☆☆ for a great Idea GOOD STUFF Kind Regards Peter Morton

    That is awesome...thank you!
But i would like to add that yes buying replacement struts for your hood or hatch is expensive and ends up doing the same thing, if you have an hydraulic shop near you that rebuilds them ,it would be the best ...cause they build them right and to last. The factory struts are made to wear out like everything else. And those hatches are way heavy when you have no compression at all, im a big guy and do a lot of heavy lifting and i wouldn't want to be lifting a hatch without any struts for a every day vehicle let alone ever. Yes that is good for struts that are some life left ,and if you are the kind of guy to use a stick, like me... just let your viewers know that getting a shop to rebuild them would be way better than replacing them...oh and that they wouldn't want to take those struts off without a stick in place ,or someone strong holding the hatch.👍👍👍. Ps definitely subbed.🙂

Yeah, a lot of my subs and people I sub to are part of the Garage Gang. I'll have to get in the next time around.

Good idea If i'm in a pinch will have to use the trick. I had a jeep that I replaced the rear gate shocks and haven't had any trouble with the new ones. Think there going on 3 years now. Think they were aftermarket and not that pricey. Will try the pvc though if these ones ever stop working. I have enough bumps on the head as it is.

great idea man will be doing this on my 98 jeep cherokee this spring I got the stick that lays in the back I have been smacked in the head so many times by that hatch I can't count when it gets warm it stays up but when it gets cold it falls every time.

I hope you do, as it makes living with a weak hatch so much better.

Michael Morris Thanks for this comment. I've been having bad back of the head conditions and I think the hatchback is making them worse. I'm still paying for a car I can't claim as a lemon because of the hatch going down when I least expect it.
Now I know how to look out for the hatch doing this, since it was very cold yesterday morning and does fine later in the day.
