      From an audience perspective, it sounded the most subdued. The Kingston had the most punch, the 534 (video coming soon) seemed to sit the best with a big tone, and this one was kind of “meh” in a rock mix from where I was sitting.

    I've been a fan of Mike Tobias' basses since I was a teenager-- my first "Bass Crush" was a 4-string Tobias Classic (yes, Gibson-era) at the local music store. It was heads-and-shoulders above everything else my newbie-bassist hands had ever touched up to that point, or since!

  • @ZlatoyarBass
    @ZlatoyarBass Рік тому +7

    The Super model is a perfect choice if you wanna have really present in a mix bass: lots of growl, punchy mids, crispy high. Maybe not a huge bottom low but you can fix that fix eq. For rock stuff I'll recommend to switch it to single coil mode or neck pickup in parallel. I have 2 Super basses (Kingston one and custom Headless) - both of them can reach any style of music, you just need to figure out the options which are plenty. I have dozens of videos with those on my channel =)

    • @Therealchuckbailey
      @Therealchuckbailey Рік тому

      I think it’s more of a preference thing. Any bass can be used for any style but ultimately I feel MTD other custom options can perform more for what I want and need for tone. Again to preface I don’t think this bass is bad at all. Quite the contrary. But if you give me the choice to use this or my 534 MTD… the 534 is getting picked every time. To be fair tho I had a choice in everything that bass was made to specs on and this one MTD was just kind enough to send to us to review. I would be curious to try one closer to wood and electronics specs that I use and see the difference.

    Another great-sounding bass from MTD. I think this bass would work for anything. I think you are missing the 35" scale and a neck pickup. Basses like this one are one-trick-ponies, but that one sounds deeper than standard MM type basses.

    Also, I feel like the pick up configuration, and then tone, are attempting to mimic a music man style a bit, and for some one who has a tendency to play closer to the bridge if I'm using a pick, might click a bit 😅

    • @Therealchuckbailey
      @Therealchuckbailey Рік тому +1

      It’s a unique sound for sure and not a bad one by any means! I just like the lower lows personally but man it’s got it’s one tone. I guess it’s closest to the MM by its pickups positions but even then they’re very different

    • @gearhead215
      @gearhead215 Рік тому +2

      @@Therealchuckbailey it didn't sound terrible, and that's kind of how my cort is w the MM in the back, and a J bybthe neck that I can kick on to help with the lows you kinda lose from that position/pickup/ what ever causes the boom to drop out. So I get what your saying in that sense I think. It's def gorgeous and well built, I'm sure it's amazing, but the lows not being there unless heavily EQd sounds familiar, and makes sense now that you said that 🤔

      @rockereivanivan Рік тому +1

      @@Therealchuckbailey yeah, I've been told that Alnicos are IT when it comes to pickups, that they feel like home, but I've always liked to hear the treble on bass without it sounding piercing or harsh and I've had about 12 and I didn't like the sound of any of them and started doing research on pickups and found out that alnicos tend have less treble. So I looked to see which basses had alnicos and to my surprise almost all of them had them. I went and bought the cheapest Jackson bass because they have ceramic pickups and man the sound was amazing to my ears, it definitely beat any other bass I had.

    Subdued or dull highs seems to be a fairly common critique of Bartolinis in general. I've put a set of their soap bars in my Kingston Z5 and set flat they often sound a bit dull, but play really nicely and come alive with a little bump on the high end from the Delano preamp. I wonder how this one would sound with brighter pickups like Nordstrand Big Splits.

    This is a cool and honest review!!! Did you try the Kingston Super 5? That bass sounds amazing and more in the StingRay realm with serious bite, growl, and punch to my ears(at least it does on UA-cam). I'm seriously considering getting one to see how it compares to my StingRay 5 HH Special.

      Also Mike and Dan appreciate Honesty and I didn’t say this bass was trash or anything 😂 I said it wasn’t for me. I own 2 of their custom models (534 and Saratoga) and I love them both. I’m not a fan of the overt brightness ash brings and this bass was all ash! Even the neck… so that coupled with the pickups positioning just wasn’t for me. I wouldn’t want to lie to you guys cause I am an endorsing artist… that would be wrong and kinda lame to shill to that cause of that reason. Anyways the bass IS DOPE and people like zlatoyar and Bubby make them smack BUT they had a say in their build so different woods, requests, etc so naturally they will be advocates for this model. Since it was a blind test I didn’t love the tone but I wasn’t mad at it per say. Just not one I would reach for if my other customs were choices that’s all. 👍🏼
