This was on my birthday, I remember this year. In west GA our roads were like this. The buddies and I went out drifting all night. Best birthday I've had.
@tyler t then how do we do it here in the north? How do the Russians do it then? How about the people in Northern Scandinavia? It's doable, you just can't have crappy all seasons or summer only tires like these people use.
Always annoys me to hear people from the north talk about "snow driving"............the south rarely gets a "snow packed road", it's an ice rink!! Hell, even our local news had a little shot of a kid skating with his hockey stick on his road.
Turd Ferg I just moved AK to Huntsville AL. They shut down the state for this storm. luckily it missed Huntsville, but I agree, that ice is nasty no matter where you're from.
Ditto! Ice is tough on all drivers f they do not have the correct tires on their autos and still some may need chains, cables, straps to assist in gaining traction Problem is people in general think they sneak by without any of these things and most do fail miserably. Here's The best part, If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare by buying ice rated tires for their autos! Priceless.
Nick Rahn right? Idk how people don't see that, if they stay still they slide, if the tires rotate and you tap the brakes little at a time you'll eventually stop
If you drive on ice once every blue moon, how are you going to learn? They panic and that's the end of it, as most people do first time on ice. And of course have no tires for the condition and should have left the car at home.
hejamodo that's the problem, many people have experienced it multiple times and are still clueless, you should only be allowed to drive if you're good with physics if you ask me
As an Alabamian myself... I will say without shame that we have NO idea how to drive in this weather. It's hard to learn something when it's impossible to practice. This kind of weather hardly ever happens here.
wowitskevin here's what you do, when you're slipping on ice, you tap the brakes and steer it the direction of the slide, if you slam in the brake you'll just slide but tapping you'll eventually stop. Now goin down hill, your best bet is to hit a curb if there's any
True, but the tires probably aren't right for ice (I mean it IS Alabama!), likely no weight in the bed, and the front diff is open, not a locker or limited slip. Actually, considering all that, I don't think he did too bad.
I lived in North Dakota and am highly skilled in winter driving, but you can't outmaneuver ice. I can assure everybody that, even with my familiarity in driving on poor road conditions up north, the ice in B'Ham was exceptionally treacherous.
Oh yeah its because people in Alabama don't use winter tires? You know it rarely snows there right? They'd use winter tires for 2 days out of the year.
Well maybe because where you live you don’t get black ice, you just get a lot of dry snow which doesn’t affect a vehicle nearly as bad as black ice. In places where winter weather is uncommon, ice storms are more likely to happen over snow storms.
as someone who lives in an extremely cold place I can't stop laughing at this dumb comment. No matter how many years you live, your unchained/unstudded tires are useless against ice.
That was scary to look at for me. I live in Indiana now, but I grew up in California's Central Valley, and it's the worst feeling losing control of your vehicle at the drop of a hat like that. Probably worse in the South than up here just because they don't have the same preparations at the ready to handle it because it's not as common. Needless to say, I sympathize with those drivers who have to brave those road conditions.
I live in Canada and though mud terrains would be fine in the winter. I was doing good up until I hit some black ice on a corner and plowed my truck into the snow bank on the curb. I was lucky to not do any damage. The next day I went out and bought a good used set of proper winter tires.
I’m from Brantley Alabama and remember the ice storm in 2014,now I’ve lived in Massachusetts since December 2014.I have ret to get stuck in the snow or in a slide out.But I witnessed a lot of people spin out and collide into guard walls on the highway.
In these kind of conditions its really important to have proper tires in your car. Slush and undercooled water are the worst IMO. I have had more close calls with slush on the road, than with ice. I had too wide winter tires in my previous car and it was "always" on slushplaning.
I lived in Bham when this happened. I was one of the smart ones that stayed home. It's not surprising to me that they can't drive on ice. They don't even drive good on a warm, dry, sunny day. Added to that, most of the city is hilly and mountainous.
Chains is for scandinavians, for mountains. Just use winter tyres. And if you are slideing, dont block tyres by pressing brake. Make roll tyres and controll your car. Americans think they gut BIG truck/car ant they are kings of the road. They look like idiots with chains. Where i live we got ice/snow on roads ~3months a year. Even children know what to do. If you drive pick up you need some weight on back, or else you will look like american with chains on wheels.
Klavs Rubins who cares. Chains are $40, 10 mins, and can also be put on top of winter tires. Why not have them and use them in emergencies? Ever seen Russian crash videos? There ya go
Most of these are in my city. There are multiple reasons that so many of these people can’t drive in one of the snowiest weeks we’ve had. Reasons: 1.) It hit faster than expected. We were at school that morning, sent home early, then at around 3pm all roads were completely covered with snow. It kept snowing. And snowing. And snowing. 2.) More than expected. Normally we get 24-72 hours of snow on the ground, and maybe 12 hours of it actually falling. It’s normally spots of ice, and that’s it. This time, overnight, some of the snow melted and was refrozen into ice. Then, more snow fell. This was thicker/more ice than we’ve gotten in a long time. 3.) Ill-equipped. We have I think 1 snowplow for a 25 mile radius of hills and valleys. Plus, your every day joe, not the best with anything past normal conditions in the heat, is not going to know the first thing about driving his front wheel drive light sedan with summer tires (all season at best) on a hill that’s iced over. That’s a lot basically to say “we ain’t never seen dis much snow”
Lol, reminds me of the time we headed south during a cold snap, there were roads closed everywhere that had just a dusting of snow on them. We were legitimately laughing at everyone freaking out
Thing is, in Europe you are mandated to have ice/winter tires. In Norway, tires are nail studded. There are random checkpoints on roads to make SURE you have the right tires. In the US, 80% of these people are on summer tires or all-seasons at best.
My husband and I were returning to Tennessee from Florida on Friday night (01/06/17) on I 20 near Birmingham. There was an accident ahead of us that we couldn't see, but the traffic was forced to stop. That's when the roadway froze over and we were stuck. We sat on I 20 for 16 hours before they finally allowed the traffic to clear. Imagine 16 hours in a car that's stuck on an icy road, with half a tank of gas, with temperatures at around 15 degrees! We were stuck in what seemed like a remote area, between exits, from 8:30 p.m. until around 12:00 noon the next day (Saturday). Thank God there was also a stranded Greyhound bus behind us and the driver was kind enough to let me use the restroom on board. It was horrible for us, but I can't imagine how bad it must have been for the elderly or young children, or people who may have run out of gas, who were also stuck on that roadway. Also, there was NO INFORMATION on the local radio stations to let us know what was going on. When the sun finally came up the next morning, we saw police and military vehicles travelling on the other side of the road. The police car went back and forth on the westbound lanes several times, but still NO INFORMATION. Alabama, you need to do a better job. People could have died out there!!
B0omer96 and you're comparing weeks of driving in it per year to days every 3rd year... If you didn't see lots of accidents during 5 months of a year, that would be quite a feat, don't you think?
What people don't understand is when the ice and sleet fall in the south....true 'sutherners' stay home and watch the imported people from up north try to drive here.
Ice & driving just don't mix. I live in Arkansas and we don't salt the roads up here and with all the hills, it's just best to stay home if at all possible.
I know you just think how are they not noticing. It's even better to watch cars with 2 snow tires studded or not, you don't need to turn, brake or maintain solid footing. Nope just as long as you have enough grip to start moving. Had a friend in NJ they closed schools and virtually all non essential business over reports of snow the next day. Guess how much wait for it up to 2" yup 2 inches of fluff. I asked him do they only sell racing slicks for cars around here or something lol.
If you are uncertain of the surface of the road, hit the brake pedal with maximum force (when there is no one behind you and you are on a straightforward road) and if you feel the brake distance is not satisfying, park your car at home. Peace and love from Scandinavia
as a I live in Alabama and I'm over the road truck driver I was at the house when this hit and I was the only one in my neighborhood with snow chains and I became the go to guy to get people home
I live in Chicago, but I was in Tn. for a death in the family. On my way back north, early in the morning darkness driving thru the "mountains", the highway was clear and dry until the little tributaries of meltwater that flowed onto the highway would saturate sections of it, and freeze due to it being February. Nothing like zipping along at 65, and hitting these random ice patches, truck starting to slide, and then right back to clean dry pavement.
You can't expect people to spend $600 on a good set of winter tires when they live in an area where it freezes maybe twice a year. Best thing to do, stay home when it freezes.
I can't believe it's January and you guys are getting sunlight. I'm from Chicago and we go months without seeing a glimpse of the sun during our winter between September and May.

How about a mutual aid agreement from another state to use their equipment? Utility companies move hundreds of vehicles and thousand of workers to areas needing additional aid. I guess it's still about cost.
I live in southside birmingham where every single street is a hill. I took my camry to walmart the day after this was filmed. I made it just fine because I appear to be the only one capable of knowing which roads I could and couldn't go down.
If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare their cars by buying ice rated tires and or chains! Priceless.
I’m a nationwide trucker of almost 10 years. I’m originally from Alabama and never encountered ice or snow until I started hauling freight cross country. I’ve learned a lot and consider myself an ice road trucker now. Anyways, most of you on here complaining about this isn’t bad, don’t know jack. I can drive through blizzards out west all day and night. But all it takes is a thin sheet of ice to shut down entire cities. However, Alabama and Georgia should invest in salt trucks. It helps.
I live in Alabama and we we were stuck on the highway because people couldn't get up a hill, and this was the first time we got snow in like 8 years or so.
Sometimes im like "maaann I wish theres snow here in Costa Rica" but after this im really glad theres no snow here in Costa Rica specially with our drivers hahahaha

0:30 to 0:35 that celica drifted like no other 10/10. He was in the fujiwara zone

@tyler t then how do we do it here in the north? How do the Russians do it then? How about the people in Northern Scandinavia? It's doable, you just can't have crappy all seasons or summer only tires like these people use.

@tyler t We in Finland can do it
This is Birmingham, Alabama people. This town averages just an inch of snow per year.
Russians are the most perfect drivers on icy roads, see their videos and learn!!

Always annoys me to hear people from the north talk about "snow driving"............the south rarely gets a "snow packed road", it's an ice rink!! Hell, even our local news had a little shot of a kid skating with his hockey stick on his road.

*ABS has left the chat*
😂😂😂😂😂I was thinking about the abs too😂😂
it could be that ABS turns off when after realising brakes wheels weren't rotating much (because of the ice), like if the car stopped
ABS is left the game
Traction Control too
If the tires have no grip at all then theres nothing ABS and TCS can do
you know the weather is bad when a Dodge dually that weighs 10 thousand pounds can't get traction in 4wd
True, but the tires probably aren't right for ice (I mean it IS Alabama!), likely no weight in the bed, and the front diff is open, not a locker or limited slip. Actually, considering all that, I don't think he did too bad.
No tire is good for ice, if a road has zero traction changing tread doesn't change anything, only chains do because you can break the ice up.
Wrong. Ever hear of siping your tires?
Dually's aren't the best for snow/ice.
That dually was a 1 ton pickup so it was only 2 thousand pounds. But still that’s pretty icy
I lived in North Dakota and am highly skilled in winter driving, but you can't outmaneuver ice. I can assure everybody that, even with my familiarity in driving on poor road conditions up north, the ice in B'Ham was exceptionally treacherous.

Winter tires (studded tires) are illegal in many states because they tear up the road surface.

Canadians are cooler than u. Figuratively and literally

All season tires at work...lol
most likely not A/S
Summer tires at work.
Mind you a studless winter tire won't do much better on ice. Snow sure but solid ice means no grip without studs or socks.

1 inch of snow in B'ham and the whole city shuts down. This ice is pretty rare.

Is there even 50 sets of X-Ice in that state?
badass 80 series doing work hahahah 4wd toyota power
Matias Naulin I thought forn trucks were only good at reliability and sucked at everything else
The Toyota had chains on the front tires he was smart
I like how we in the south very few of us can drive in ice and snow but to their credit the state rarely salts the road and waits till it's too late
and i thought oregon was bad not salting their roads
It's freaking Alabama. It doesn't happen too often. They don't get snow and ice every other day.
These conditions only come once every 3-5 years, so buying vehicles to distribute salt would sit more than they would be operated.
It has literally happened the last two years.
Yeh. But it's still rare!
How about a mutual aid agreement from another state to use their equipment? Utility companies move hundreds of vehicles and thousand of workers to areas needing additional aid. I guess it's still about cost.
One serious question: Are they using summer tires or what?
2:20
Take note that everybody drives on summer tires. I mean... what do you expect?
Yeah what else do you expect in Alabama? 99% of time summer tyres work over there...
0:27
How many cameras do you have?
Yes
Why would you bother driving is what I don't understand
stupidity mostly. Especially when you consider that it's Alabama..........it'll be 60 degrees tomorrow!!! LOL
they're a bunch of dumb fu*%s down there, that's why
sweet home alabama
I live in southside birmingham where every single street is a hill. I took my camry to walmart the day after this was filmed. I made it just fine because I appear to be the only one capable of knowing which roads I could and couldn't go down.
Kyle Price
not from alabama but I'd get in trouble for not coming to work because of icy roads. i think most people would.
If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare their cars by buying ice rated tires and or chains! Priceless.
lol everyone's drifting :]
Do people in Alabama cover their tires with plastic bags in the winter?
i find myself telling them to let off the brakes!!! lol.
Scott Cnossen I’m screaming at my phone ugh so frustrating
Why did I not know there is a Sammy's in B'ham!
No winter tires was hurt in the making of this video (disclaimer)
Nice to see _someone_ knows how to use a tow hook. I saw someone try to pull a car buy the rim once.
Stay Off brakes,,, people
It's sad that so many people have no concept of how to use momentum to get up hills on slick surfaces and engine braking to get down them...
Unless you take your driving lessons during winter, you aren't going to learn how to drive on ice until its Icy
That is why I taught my daughter to drive on icy roads...and how to drive a standard transmission.
It helps.
لو عندنا بالسعوديه كان خليناها ساحه درفت 😂😂
ALHARBI SA كان تفحيط ههههه😹
لو عندنا في بالسعوديه كان تشوف تنطيل

When the thumbnail is the very first clip, gotta like it
So much for ABS braking systems. :-(

TheTmaaan55 I guess he works at The Redundancy Office of Redundancy. 😉😀
@@TheTmaaan55 Rip in peace!
I live in Alabama and we we were stuck on the highway because people couldn't get up a hill, and this was the first time we got snow in like 8 years or so.
Brains brains them southern brains!
Do people in not very snowy states know what winter tires are
Have Americans ever heard of winter tires?
Yes, but in the southern USA, snow/ice is so rare that it's not worth buying them. Better to just stay put for a day.
Better to purchase tires chains online and be prepared.
What are these “winter tires” that you speak of?
winter tire i guess it has special jacket wrap around the wheel so it won't get hypothermia
sazuma .. Ever heard of Alabama, smart-aleck? Mild winters and long hot summers? Not cold enough, often enough, to justify winter tires.
1:07 push slip fall flat on ground, car slides running over you! IS IT WORTH THE RISK?
Basic driving skills where I come from.
Burn The Obedient so what you're saying is people don't know how to drive where you're from?? LoL
Let me know where, so I can avoid it..
The only time you can see Grandma doing sick drifts
this looks like Seattle, are you sure it's not Seattle?
the interstate sign says I65 North, Alabama..there's that also...
I looked up icy road mayhem in websters: it said, a combination of ice, automobiles and albamanians
While you're at it, look up "residents of Alabama".
Fuel efficency 99.9
This is where you pick up the phone and say ummm I’m not coming in right now.
I don't understand. Isn't ABS a standard on cars in the US? No advance driving courses available?
ABS doesn’t halo with stopping. Only helps with control.
Sometimes im like "maaann I wish theres snow here in Costa Rica" but after this im really glad theres no snow here in Costa Rica specially with our drivers hahahaha
