DeForest Kelley Westerns (Dr. McCoy)

- Of all the Star Trek Cast Kelley has the most western movies and TV under his belt, made during the 1950s and 60s. Shatner made a couple. Unfortunately not doing well, in fact some may argue they were stinkers. The Outrage 1964 and White Comanche 1968.
Kelley was spotted by a Paramount talent scout while working on a United States Navy training film. He soon became a reliable character actor (often in Westerns in which he often played the villain), but hit the big time when he was offered the role of the somewhat irascible Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy on the television series Star Trek (1966).

Dammit Jim I'm a cowboy not a tenderfoot. Kelley had such a boyish smile that lit up his face, It served him well when he played villains.
The banter between Spock and bones was always great
His eyes, facial expressions, and his town of voice telegraphed they type of character he was playing. Subtle changes in any of them seemed to be so emphasised.
I always thought De Kelley was the best dramatic actor on Star Trek. Never hammy like Shatner, though nothing wrong with that because it was always entertaining. Had a real gravitas and could be truly frightening, for instance in the Star Trek episode Return of the Archons 'Your not of the Body'.
And someone else who despite playing bad guys was apparently in real life warm, gentle and friendly, the loveliest person you could ever meet and a true Southern Gentleman.
Interesting to see actors so iconic in one genre cutting their teeth in another!
A unique character
I have always liked Deforest Kelly - good voice and face - a far better actor than he is remembered for
Yes a unique character. I thought worthy of his own video, thanks!
One non western that Kelly stood out was in House of Bamboo with Robert Stack as the good guy and Robert Ryan as the villain. Kelly was like a shadow over Stack and was a lot more frightening of a character then Ryan.
It made my chuckle when i saw De Kelley was todays choice of characters, I just watched him in Warlock last night, thanks for the work you do and yes Shatner was terrible in westerns.

Man, it's still a shock to me to see DeForest Kelly play so many Villains in Westerns! My first experience seeing him was as an Earp brother good guy in Gun Fight at OK Corral, then, I don't guess I noticed him him much until Star Trek where he played Hero Dr. McCoy. I just got done watching him play Villains in Bonanza, Lawman, and Cheyenne! Still a shock despite having 500 Western movies and a lot of TV Westerns now. My current TV Western list;

Kelly was from Atlanta and it was likely hid Southern accent that got him in Wasterns
Have you done a video about Jack Elam very good supporting actor , playing Villains or grumpy old good guys (support your local sheriff/gunfighter) or James Garner.
Eerie, I write a comment yesterday suggesting that you do a DeForest Kelly video and the very next day you publish one. I will presume this was already in the pipeline, just a strange coincidence. Surprised you found the two movies where Kelly played a sympathetic or good guy character. I wonder what Star Trek fans in the 1960d thought after watching a decade of westerns with Kelly playing the bad guy and now a great good guy.
Deforest Kelley was nearly always a villain in westerns. He was a much nicer fella in the TV series 'Star Trek' lol.
In the 1965 western 'Apache Uprising', Kelley is an unhinged killer and a borderline psycho. Co-stars Rory Calhoun, Arthur Hunnicutt, John Russell, and Lon Chaney.
👍🕺👍🕺👍🕺👍🕺
Nimoy was also in the Pat Garrett serial "The Tall Man."
I would argue that RAINTREE COUNTY isn't a western, since it took place as far east as you can get, in Georgia during the Civil War, but otherwise this is a pretty good retrospective of De's career in westerns.
Yeah, sometimes gotta let go the strict western rules, Westerns were more a state of mind rather than just a geographic reference. Thanks.
