2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000GT+ - Suzuki’s Sportiest Sport-Touring Model Yet?

  • A two-day, 500-mile test of Suzuki’s all-new GT platform proves Suzuki has found the sweet spot where performance, comfort, and fun all come together.
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Easier said than done, especially when you’re engineering and manufacturing vehicles. Yet here we are aboard the 2022 GSX-S1000GT+, Suzuki’s latest-generation sport-tourer and a clear sign that the Japanese manufacturer is giving it another try. As it turns out, you’ll be glad they did.
It would be wrong to suggest that Suzuki hasn’t had any previous success with building memorable sport-touring bikes. Luggage-equipped Bandits come to mind, as do versions of the GSX1250. But even with those notches in its belt, Suzuki has struggled to capture the spirit of modern-day sport-touring and find the sweet spot where performance, comfort, and fun all come together. The all-new Grand Tourer looks to change that.
The GT platform consists of two models, the GSX-S1000GT ($13,149) and the luggage-equipped GT+ ($13,799). These take the place of the capable but forgettable GSX-S1000F, which quietly fell out of Suzuki’s lineup in 2021, either to make space for this platform or as an admission of defeat at the hands of the feature-rich competition.
Suzuki’s formula here is familiar. As it’s done in the past, Suzuki borrowed concepts and hard parts from previous S-branded sportbikes. Similarly, the bike has been built off bones that could be shared with the naked, city-oriented GSX-S1000 that Cycle World also just tested.
The difference here is that, evidently, Suzuki set out to build a capable sport-tourer before anything else. The 1000F failed, in part, because it was a naked bike with a fairing tacked on. It filled a hole in the lineup, but didn’t truly satisfy the needs of a sport-touring rider. The GT would seem to be Suzuki’s promise not to make that mistake again.
    The Tools for Touring
Suzuki didn’t have to start completely fresh when building the GT. That’s the benefit of being the company behind one of the most successful superbikes of all time, the immortal GSX-R1000. Sportbike lineage comes first and foremost from the engine, a powerplant made famous by the K5 GSX-R and later “retuned for midrange” so that it could be used in Suzuki’s road-focused lineup.
Suzuki is careful to point out that this is a heavily updated version of that 999cc long-stroke mill. Compared to the GSX-S1000F, the torque curve is broader and smoother with a slight power increase up top. Key to this improved character are the new camshafts, which decrease lift and valve overlap. Retooled valve springs are matched to the new camshafts, while a revised cam-chain tensioner and tension adjuster reduce friction and improve durability. The shift shaft, clutch assembly, and engine cases are also on the list of new-for-’22 components.
New electronic throttle bodies help smooth out the engine response, and the ride-by-wire setup opens the door to a suite of electronic systems including Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) with three selectable ride modes, Traction Control (TC), Electronic Cruise Control (CC), and a bidirectional Quick Shift system (QS).
The air cleaner has a new internal structure that contributes to the GT’s increased performance and has been reshaped to accommodate the larger-capacity fuel tank, which deserves its own mention.
The GT is outfitted with a slip/assist clutch called the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) and uses a close-ratio transmission borrowed from the GSX-R1000, with vertically staggered shafts to reduce overall engine length. Carryover items like this are a major indicator that Suzuki intended this sport-touring bike to place the emphasis on sport.
More connections to the GSX-R1000 are found in the chassis, the foundation of which is a twin-spar aluminum frame with relatively straight main spars offering higher rigidity and lighter weight. The swingarm comes straight from the GSX-R1000, while wheels are unique to the GSX-S. So too are Dunlop’s new Roadsport 2 radial tires (120/70ZR-17 at the front and a new, wider sized 190/50ZR-17 at the rear).
A much more obvious change is the addition of a bolt-on trellis-style subframe, which not only looks trick but adds structural support for two-up riding with luggage. Brakes include fully floating 310mm discs up front with Brembo Monoblock calipers; ABS comes standard.

I really like this bike. I've owned both an '11 Ninja 1000 and a '16 FJR1300. My N1K was an awesome bike but not good 2-up. My FJR was an equally awesome bike, great for 2-up but a big girl, kinda heavy for my tastes. I've seen a lot of 2-up shots for the Suzuki but it's so close the N1K in so many ways, I find it had to believe it'd be any better as a 2-up ride. If I were only riding solo, this bike would definitely be on my radar.

I'll expand on HahrtDood's excellent questions.
I too have a 29" inseam and find most reviewers simply ignore ergonomics except as they relate to the reviewer size. Can you comment on how well this will fit a shorter rider (29" inseam and correspondingly shorter arms) from the standpoint of seat height and width, position of the footpegs in relation to leg position when standing, reach to the bars, and the weight of the bike?
Does this bike come with self-cancelling turn signals?
You mentioned no vibes, then clarified to say just enough that you know you are on a motorcycle. I've read other reviews that indicated it can get a little buzzy over 5000 rpms. Did you notice that?
Other reviews also commented that gas range is rather low at around 150 - 170 miles. Can you share what you experienced?
Your 500 mile tour is much longer than most other reviewers and will provide very valuable insight to riders like me who are interested in this bike and impatiently waiting for it to arrive in the U.S.
    Thanks

Don't mean to "ignore" other rider size. It's not as easy to get comments from other riders during a first ride, as I'm the only one from the Cycle World team riding at that time. When we have a GT back in the office, it'll be easier to get comments from the rest of the team, which includes a few riders closer in size to you. One thing to consider is that Suzuki doesn't want to shy away from a "sport" feeling, and as a result the pegs are a little high and back on purpose. I rode with more of my heel on the peg to keep my feet flat, vs. itched up. The tank/seat junction is manageable but riders (especially taller riders) will notice the tank feels a bit wide at their knees. That's one of those "can't have your cake and eat it, too" things (the tank is .5 gallon larger, after all).
Suzuki claims 170 to 175 mile range. In tighter canyon riding we were closer to that 160, while on longer, highway sections we actually managed around 37 mpg. That seems to align with what you've read/heard elsewhere.
I would not describe the GT as buzzy. Again, there's a touch of vibrations in the seat, but I think that's almost purposeful. Toward the front of the seat the vibrations quiet even more. There were almost none at the handlebar and feet.

@@bradleyadams1286 Bradley, thanks for the quick reply. I think poor choice of words on my part. Didn't mean to imply you deliberately ignored the issue. I meant to say most reviewers understandably focus on how the bike fits them. And given your above average height you couldn't possibly assume you would know how a bike fits my below average height. Frustrating for shorter riders like me who eagerly await reviews from shorter reviewers like EnglishbikerDan and Usernamekate. Seeking out riders of other sizes on your follow up review will be most welcome. However your follow up comments on peg placement, tank width, and seating position are all insightful. Although there is a lot to like about this bike, I suspect the position will be too sporty with too much forward lean for my liking.
Thanks also for answering my other questions and the questions below.

    • @kmb957
      @kmb957 2 роки тому +1

It probably depends on what you are used to. Naturally bikes get wider as the displacement increases on them which makes the seat height number deceiving. If you flat foot a bike like a Ninja 400, this bike would probably put you on your toes because of the width. Best best is to find a dealer and sit on one.

is that triumphs fly screen they stuck on there an calling a touring windscreen? what!?. an non adjustable. hmmm, Ok u can tell me sport touring Im not seeing it though. only sport. a gixxer sitting up straight. centerstand? another No?. hmm. heated grips standard?. No again huh?. sport bike seat i see. Ok well I always replace seats, noone gives u a decent seat anymore, but it should be alot better than that if u gonna call it sport-TOURing.
thats all sport an no touring so far. wheres this Touring u speak of?. OHHhhhhh. the bags!. Ok. thats ONE for "Touring".
whats the rpm at average daily normal realistic highway speeds?. u know, like a HD Low Rider ST, a FJR ST, or say a Concours ST?. the same 3-3500?. Oh u say it's 9000 rpm on the freeway? ouch, did ya think about retuning/gearing that there gixxer a lil bit for touring?. cos vibes suck. they'll suck quickly on the highway. add to that the joke of a windscreen u got sucky suckass Tourer.
buzzed an blown to death. at any normal freeway speed you'd be lucky to stand it for 20mins. not good. not Touring.
the problem is its really really not touring at all. GSXR, with bags. an sit upright. they know how to make sport bikes. theyre good at sport bikes. the gixxer engine is great but they didnt tune n gear-sprockets it for touring, its the same waaaahhhh high rpm, high vibrations, squid missile gixxer fools engine that will numb ur hands and butt in a few minutes anytime u attempt freeways.
along with a tiny flyscreen that u would probably be better off with the naked S an take the free wind. or melt down 1000 plastic bottles an try to form them on top an sides of it to get SOME KIND of wind relief. and NON adjustable. double doh!.
it should be called the commuter special. or the bike night bagger. or sport-not-really-kinda-touring, but this gixxer squid missile with bags has no business using the term Touring in it's name.
Id rather start a petition they bring back the SV650 with bags and that wonderful twin engine it's be a damn sight better bike to slap bags on an call it an ST.
an if ur wondering if Kawys SX offering is any better its not. its the ninja squid missile with bags, same buzz an sh*t screen numb u and wind beat u to death inside a half hour on the highway.
it does have a centerstand though, and an IMU, but its no Touring either. rip them light to light, but stay away from those highways for more than a few minutes.
real sport tourers from japan are the Concours and the FJR. even a HD Low Rider ST is a better balance of sport an touring. I dont know what to tell u. the Japanese do squid missiles very well, but they dont get touring. They did. but no gixxer or ninja squids will ride a Concours or a FJR. both are the consumete & exact textbook definition of ST. but totally not cool to squids.
But theyll sell alot of these to the squids who got a lil older. still wanna gofast, but cant take the sport bike bend anymore.
when they realize they still have the high-rpm buzzing on the freeway as their sport bike an even less windscreen than it too, which wont take long, theyll probably get a Road glide or Challenger next that have the Tq for the wwahhh their squid hearts crave, an smooth as butter at 90 on the freeway. Just like my Connie. and the FJR.
