Many years ago (late 1990s), a friend had painted her bathroom black. It was stunning! It was contrasted with classic white tile and white porcelain. And, on the walls, she had hung gorgeous vintage paintings in gold frames. I remember it to this day because I had never before (or since) seen anyone decorate their bathroom in this manner. It was absolutely gorgeous!
I love that blacks, brass and greens are making a comeback! It has a sort of classy Victorian feel to me when it's done right. And I love Victorian decor!
I've always loved this style too but I'm somewhat apprehensive about it becoming trendy. If it gets massive then it could look dated/overdone after a while.
In our house before we moved in, I insisted on painting all my interior doors black with a blue undertone. I can't tell you how amazing they look against my dark cognac colored floors and with the brass knobs. That's actually one of the reasons I wanted to paint them black so that my dated knobs would look classy. Everyone looked at my like I was nuts, but I now can't imagine them being any other color. It just adds so much dimension to my rooms without needing to spend tons of money on art.
I absolutely love my black window frames and wouldn’t change them for any amount of money! Each person should have their own deco style and decorate as to their own personal likes and dislikes!
I heard early on in my decorating that every room needs a bit of black to ground the space so I usually have touches of black in a room. We painted my daughter's bathroom black when she was in high school - so sometime in the early 2000s. There was a huge mirror and a lot of white trim. It was gorgeous. Black and white toile was extremely popular. Black painted furniture with gold accents was trendy then too.
I would like to hear more of your thoughts about painting the wall behind the TV black and have you show how you would decorate around it. With TVs getting so big, having the black wall behind it sounds like a great way to minimize it’s appearance.
I did a post with 10 ways to hide a a TV (ua-cam.com/video/dyampQ_oyas/v-deo.html) that you might find helpful! If you're going with a black wall behind, I'd probably use a gallery wall around the TV itself!
Love that you’re addressing black for interiors! It’s actually so important. And it doesn’t have to be jet black. Off black or a dark gray works in the same fashion. I believe every room needs something “black” or very dark to ground the room. Otherwise our eye just wanders around the room and never has the opportunity to rest.
Black has been my primary color for Furniture, vases, throws and many other decor pieces. I like the combo of white and black or gray and black...Black , brown and gold is beautiful together
You are so correct about black. As a little thrifter growing, I learned that every room should have a touch of black, to ground the room. Love your videos, just found you last month and loving you and your style, 👏❤️👏❤️👏❤️👏❤️👏❤️
My favorite part of this video is that brass is being welcomed back. I feel like it has been hated on for the last 10-20 years. I have beautiful, big brass lamps that were a wedding gift to my parents in the 1970’s... and I LOVE them! I just need to figure out what shade compliments them. My mom always liked the pleated kind (I don’t). Maybe I’ll paint the shades black!
Paint the outside black and the inside gloss gold. The gold reflects the light and give more back without adding higher wattage bulbs and heat from the high wattage.
I have had white walls with black trim, doors and furniture for the last 10 years that I have owned my house and have never ever got sick of it 🥰 It's not a trend for me though. What is new for me is the moody victorian feel and I'm working on switching my modern furniture for things with more character. I just bought a chesterfield couch and chair and it has made such a HUGE difference. I have always had victorian style stuff pinned on pinterest but I never connected the dots that it was the ornate and traditional styles that pulled the look off and I'm so excited to pull it all together. I LOVE dark cottagecore with purple and green. Purple has been my favorite color since I was a small child and I added dark purple floral art and purple mushrooms and forest art into my space and it's soo gorgeous. Velvet furniture and curtain make it cozy. 🥰 I swapped the daylight bulbs for soft white and it made a HUGE difference too 🥰 Next step is to swap my black modern picture frames for ornate ones and my modern square tables for ones with turned or queen anne legs. 😍
No one did black better than the Victorians. And black is perfect for making any color you love POP, so works like an outline. I think you can never go wrong with painting your window trim black on the exterior as it is sort of a "fool the eye" technique for making your windows look larger and you won't tire of it on the outside..
First time...and I love your style of teaching. Vlear, didactic, elegant, honest, knowledgeable and so respectful.to your audience! You truly make a difference, appreciate the sincere approach and lack of the forced laugh. Great content! THANKS!.LOVE AT FIRST.SIGHT!!!!
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing! I just bought black crocodile wallpaper to go wild and moody in my powder room. Brought in gold hardware & faucet. It's only a 5x5 room, so if it turns out like a dungeon it won't cost much to go back to the boring room again.😊
Must be ahead of the curve. Did the country thing during the 90's & have had b/w for the last 4yrs & I love it I call my look "Modern French mixed w Southern Charm! lol Def agree abt getting your black paint right. That makes a huge difference as well as lighting. Hope more people will give this color a try! It's really beautiful
I recently purchased a house where the ceilings throughout were painted black, with white trim. Initially, I thought I’d paint them once I moved in, but the black ceilings really grew on me. Now I love them. For a small house, they make the ceilings look higher thus making the rooms look larger. After all, isn’t your ceilings another walls? As a contractor said when he walked thru, it looks like a million.
Thank you Sarah! I love love love this trend! I’ve always loved black for some reason. When my husband and I got married in 1997 we had a black and white kitchen. I registered for black and white dishes at Pier One and my mom thought they were crazy! Haha!
This was so helpful. I had painted a very dark grey/black with a purple undertone accent wall in my dining room and something was off. I had a black IKEA console as a temporary buffet (as I am looking for the perfect piece...takes me forever) and after your video I moved an old warm brown dresser in its place. What a difference! Might even keep this as a sideboard as it looks great. Just dressed it for spring with my diy bee skep. Thanks for that too!
I feel oddly proud now. I have had my black faux leather couch for 10 years now, and still love it. I have dogs, so it frequently has blankets on it, which does allow some change to colour and pattern. But mostly, I use green and black blankets on it.
Our home was built in 1976. We are the se one owners and have owned the home 8.5 years. The main floor (guest) bath has black toilet, tub and sink. They are Koehler brand and very expensive. We love the way they look and have decorated the room to fit and we get tons of compliments on that room.
Hi Sarah. A very good and instructive video. I also like how beautifully the warm red-brown color of your hair highlights your face and very nice smile above your black shirt 🙂
I have definitely been on a little binge lately when it comes to black. I have been considering a black accent wall in my bedroom and I’m trying to resist painting all of my furniture black. I have been loving the color lately but don’t want my home to look like my aunts house. One of my aunts used to have all black and gold furniture and I remember I hated it. I don’t want to go to that extreme so I love these tips.
I love black! So beautiful and dramatic. On a different note, do you have any tips or resources for finding a really rustic but affordable coffee table that basically just looks like a tree stump? I want more rustic, woodland vibes in my home!
I hear you and applaud you for your wisdom. I think you are the perfect example of being on trend in your space. Cognac haircolour. Black outfit and a perfect undertone white on your wall. Less is best.
Leslie of A Charming Abode recently painted a focal wall in her dining room with spectacular results. With your great advice I'm going to add more black into my home. Thanks, Sarah! Have a blessed week!
Literally just put dark bronze windows in our new build (still under construction). They read as black in most lighting, especially from the inside. I absolutely love them. Though, I did hesitate at first because they’re “trendy”. It’s funny because I’m willing to take that risk, but I’m not willing to take the risk of doing brass faucets even though I love them. Haha. Sometimes we just have to go for it.
We had lots of black in out TN home. I chose to not use black here in SC, which was a very difficult decision because I love it. Our daughter bought her first home and she loves black, also, and we gifted her all of the black decor, furniture, etc. She was thrilled!!
I would love a video on wallpaper and murals! We are thinking of doing an accent wall or two and I’m lost when it comes to what type of wallpaper to use, good brands that don’t cost the earth, etc. 😊
A black wall is next on my list. I am currently working on a hunter green wall for our home office. The plan is to paint Onyx from Benjamin Moore where we have a wet bar. I am going to add midtone wood shelving for mugs and glasses on the wall and some hanging plants. But first!! I have to finish the office.
Off my open living/dining/lounge room I have a small entryway and two small hallways, all three of these small spaces are painted black (dark charcoal) and I love them and get complements off everyone who visits. My lower cabinets in the kitchen area are the same charcoal too.
Love the advice you gave. Don't think I would do a wall to scared for that. But I did get a hutch recently and painted it black and thought of the same colors to add to it to warm it down. I would rather go this way to add the black in home that way if I get tired of it I can always paint it a different color down the road.
Black is definitely dramatic and masculine. Accent decor pieces and drapes would be a happy medium. I use black with a wrought iron floor lamp and the legs of 4 plant stands with large pots of zz plants, snake plants, and a monstera deliciousa in my front sitting room. The walls are then in mustard gold and burnt orange with light beige loveseats.
In American colonial days black paint was extremely expensive. It became a status symbol among the rich to have black doors, shutters, and black painted ironwork.
Thanks Sarah, I am saving this video! You offer so many lil good tips and advice here, and I will need to look back again. I am thinking maybe the mantle wall as our focal point, and maybe the peninsula in the kitchen, and the focal wall bead board in the master. ;) I love the black paint w green undertones! I almost did this last year but everyone talked me out of it!
@@KadilakHomes It did. I was very happy with the results. Some people were shocked that I would even think about painting them black but they loved them after seeing them finished.
I wanted to use a “black accent wall”....but instead I painted a large cabinet/Armoire in black that takes up the small wall that I wanted to do... it is like doing a black fireplace surround. I love it! I can make it bigger by opening the doors to show off my decor ( it is a room that is used to walk from the living room to the kitchen 🤷♀️🤷♀️ an 1888 house ...it was the original dining room ). But I painted the inside black also , hence making it bigger by opening the door ! I can’t tell what undertones my black is? It is “Little Black Dress” by DIY. I love it. I have charcoal gray furniture and love the color. I remember the 80’s ...I was just starting my own home then. Was in love with the “black and greens”.... Nice to see it back! (( my Mother hated it.. she was all about pastel colors...we were so opposed for decor ! )) GREAT VIDEO SARAH !!! 💛
This looks like someone toured my house lol. I have onyx walls throughout with gold psychedelic wallpaper on a wall in the living room with chrome gold and clear accents. 2 plants. Oversized art. I did steampunk /industrial accents in the kitchen. A plush rug in the dining room that POPS! Bedroom is light and neutral though.
The movie It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin featured a kitchen with black windows and it was my favorite style in 2009 and that seems to be the exact same look you are referring to in this video. I don’t think black windows when done right will go out of style.
I'll do black and lavender walls in my new bed room. Black on the wall by the window and on one short wall by my bed. Then black and lavender striped pattern on the other short wall with lavender book shelf and wardrobe and then lavender on the wall opposite the window wall, as I've got a black self adhesive fireplace wall mural going on that wall
My 21 year old daughter helps me out, too. :) The relationship is exacting at times but invaluable! Mommas hold lots of love and responsibility in their hands. ❤
I just redesigned my hall bath. I don't feel too comfortable with painting a wall black. I just painted it a Grey with blue undertones. My counter is deep green. All of my accents are in black.
The use of black can be interesting also to hide flaws in unexpected places. We used black paint on our old garage ceiling (it was built with wood with its copper pipes and electrical cables exposed...plus the wood was badly stained. Our home is an old 1910 farmhouse and the garage was built much later beside the house with direct access to the kitchen. It was not a pretty transition from garage to kitchen so we added insulation and drywalls. Painted the walls white and the ceiling black. The black hid all the imperfections and exposed cables and piping. The garage is still not done bc of other more urgent projects but at least it is not such an eyesore.
I personally love the black with green undertones. I think it looks best with red brick (or leans toward orange). I suppose that's why it also looks so good with medium wood tones and cognac colors.
Is there a percentage of black in a room for furniture before it is too much? If you have a black dining table what else should you do in that room for balance. Best colors to go with black? How do you balance your eye with black because it dominates?
I just did black accent wall behind my bed Love it . I wanting do accent wall in living room I’m having hard time picking which wall? 10:4710:49 😊 10:55
Thank you for sharing! What are your thoughts on black Italian style ranges? (I love the one pictured in the thumbnail!) Are they worth the investment, or just a trend that will look dated in 10 years? My husband and I are building a home and we love the look, but it’s such a huge investment! Love your videos!
You mentioned black windows ending up feeling dated, what about in historic homes, like late 1870-1918ish? How would you suggest keeping the historic integrity without pidgin holing yourself or making the house feel out of date and stuffy?
I am getting a manufactured home. It has wood accents that are a blend of dark and light. The kitchen cabinets are white with no uppers. I am planning on painting the kitchen wall black with a combo of industrial and wood open shelving. I am also painting the family room wall ,that is open but opposite to the kitchen wall , black chalkboard. That area will be a coffee bar with metal and wood shelving and a lounge chair or small bistro table. Here is my dilemma. The living room is also open to the kitchen and I want warm earth tones for the wall paint. Thought about a sage green. And advice?
Brilliant idea for black shutters! I had a friend with a black and white interior from Ikea, it suited him but depressed me. The only thing black in my house is my computer ;>p
Curtain, pillows and white rug. My question is can olive green be farmhouse? I love the color, I also love farmhouse style. I’m thinking about putting a black and white floral on the wall behind the bed. What do you think?
I feel like black goes too modern. I do have a black farmhouse door and black silhouettes on my walls. I am thinking about painting our fence black, the green plants would pop. Have a good day!
Hi Sarah, are you running another class? When? For previous classes, any chance you have them taped and available on demand? I am planning to decorate our renovated 2,000 house black and white. Just saw your video today.

Hi Simone! You have to be careful, it can look cheap. If you do it, push toward a cottage style and use lots of greenery and wood tones to detract from it. There is a good example of what I’m talking about in this blog post ceciliamoyerblog.com/20-inspiring-dark-exterior-homes/
Love the cognac with black background. I've saved various pictures on pinterest with that vibe. My biggest problem is that in our 120 year old farmhouse, that we have lovingly cared for for 43 years, has at least 2 doorways in each room. Kitchen-2 doorways, dining room-5 doorways, living room-3 doorways, sunroom-2 doorways and bedroom-2. It has been challenging beyond imagination to arrange furniture let alone find a focal wall. Just venting- sorry! Otherwise I love your videos because they are so uplifting!
Yes, those rooms with lots of doorways are what I often call "glorified hallways", and they DO make furniture arranging very difficult! We've tackled a few of those spaces in my behind the scenes class! It takes some outside the box thinking, but we can usually find something that works!
I love that you already have a black door and shutters! If an entire wall doesn't work, there are still lots of ways to bring black in with smaller accents! :) Hope you find some you love!
Stunning! Don’t take this as a negative but the interior design videos where you only see the rooms illustrating the design style, with the presenter’s voice in background with tasteful relaxing music (never seeing the presenter at all) are far more enjoyable to watch….just a suggestion…
I like the theatrical look, where the surrounding is black and the floor in the middle is bright. Most of the black rooms I've seen, painted everything in black and it's very hard to look at things.
Where have you been? Just discovered you after I have made major errors in a house being built. The whole house flooring and baths are b/w marble tiles. And all white everything else. You get the pic. Can you save me? Do you do personal consulting?
Hi Inga! I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated! I do consulting called Power Hours! Here are all the details: finding-time-to-hold-dearly.teachable.com/p/power-hour
Quick question regarding your comment about black windows becoming dated. I was actually considering doing the black pane industrial look that you see lately. If that will easily become dated, can you suggest an alternative type of window that wouldn’t become dated?
I'd stick with white, and use shutters or other accents that are easier/far less expensive to change to get a more unique look if that's what you're going for! :)
Sounds dramatic and beautiful!
I always love dark witchy boho look and her bathroom should looked like a heaven with candle light. I can imagine her bathroom in my mind.
I love that blacks, brass and greens are making a comeback! It has a sort of classy Victorian feel to me when it's done right. And I love Victorian decor!
same!!
I've always loved this style too but I'm somewhat apprehensive about it becoming trendy. If it gets massive then it could look dated/overdone after a while.
Every trend looks dated eventually. Same in fashion. There are no styles that are “timeless”. That’s a sales gimmick.
Agreed! I just painted my home dark dark green black. I’m shooting for victorian feel!
Love my black kitchen cabinets in our bright kitchen! Balanced my black Steinway piano in the open great room.
I also love a black-green. Beautiful and elegant.
Totally agree
Black couches are so hott love them!✨🖤
I love black and white❤️❤️❤️
Me too
Black windows are classic, I don't think that they will ever go out of style
My style is finally popular lol. I did this ten years ago.
You trend setter! :) ;)
They sound lovely, Emily!
I absolutely love my black window frames and wouldn’t change them for any amount of money! Each person should have their own deco style and decorate as to their own personal likes and dislikes!

I love black lamp shades! oh and my black cat makes the room look good lol!..also gold framed pictures and mirrors look so great on black walls...
Yes gold frames are lovely against black! I love that your cat is your moving accent. 🤣🐈
I would like to hear more of your thoughts about painting the wall behind the TV black and have you show how you would decorate around it. With TVs getting so big, having the black wall behind it sounds like a great way to minimize it’s appearance.

Such a great idea
We painted the wall behind out TV black. It is great because it camouflages the TV plus at night it's like a movie theater

I find my eye will be restless and will wander right out of the room!
Love the good advice and all the black: black is back.

So true about black grounding a space

Yes, there's a scale of how much we each can take of certain colors, and some of us fall more mid-line than others! :)
I love black! So beautiful and dramatic. On a different note, do you have any tips or resources for finding a really rustic but affordable coffee table that basically just looks like a tree stump? I want more rustic, woodland vibes in my home!

Great tips! Perfect timing! I'm in the middle of an industrial remodel
You got this!
Your tips are always so practical and useful! Thank you!

All for wood shelves!!

Farrow and Ball have some nice blacks!

Yep! I love how easy it is to repaint things (though quite a bit of work!), it's always good to have it as an option.
love this video, this is exactly what I am going for in my new build. White/Black/Cognac with natural wood tones. Thanks for a great video.
Sounds like a lovely combination! Congratulations on your new build! Such a fun adventure!
It will look great!
I LOBE black.y home is mostly blacks and white. Se gold here and there. Black is such a classy color
Undertone. In paint. Is very important to know. To choose colors of paint
Great advice.

🥳 Those ideas sound lovely to me!
15 years ago I painted my kitchen cabinets black and the walls a very light blue. It turned out stunning and everyone loved it.
I bet it looks beautiful
(( my Mother hated it.. she was all about pastel colors...we were so opposed for decor ! ))
GREAT VIDEO SARAH !!! 💛
Great idea to do a large piece of furniture as your accent instead of a wall - it sounds like that is working perfectly for you!
You just saved me from black window frames in my remodel. I LOVE them, but you're right. Whew.
Glad this helped!
I did black windows and they are beautiful 😍
Thank you - been pondering painting a dark wall in the living room to blend in the tv! Very helpful ❤️
Glad it was helpful!
What color exactly for interior black doors please?
Good tips
I'll do black and lavender walls in my new bed room. Black on the wall by the window and on one short wall by my bed. Then black and lavender striped pattern on the other short wall with lavender book shelf and wardrobe and then lavender on the wall opposite the window wall, as I've got a black self adhesive fireplace wall mural going on that wall
I've been watching for a while and just wanted to say that your videos, which have always been lovely, are looking so polished and professional. 😊❤
Thank you, Amy! I'll pass the compliment along to my daughter who helps with our editing! 🤗
My 21 year old daughter helps me out, too. :) The relationship is exacting at times but invaluable! Mommas hold lots of love and responsibility in their hands. ❤
Loved this! Now I'm thinking about painting the fireplace wall in my living room black....🤔
I think you should 😁
If you’re hesitating still, check out House of Valentina. She gives amazing examples of living with black day-to-day
Beautiful.
Thank you! Just about to paint my front doors black!
They will look great!
I just redesigned my hall bath. I don't feel too comfortable with painting a wall black. I just painted it a Grey with blue undertones. My counter is deep green. All of my accents are in black.
What do you think about painting a built in bookcase black? I keep going back and forth....
YES...Beautiful... did mine black with deep dark marine blue inside.. LOVE IT!!! 💜 soo Happy !!!
I bet you can make it beautiful, go with your gut!
We painted our built in bookcase black and then used a dark brown wax on it. Turned out amazing. It’s classic and timeless.
Great info
I think black window light frames are classic
Great work!
This is gorgeous, Sarah, and the advice wonderful. I have inscribed the 3 undertones indelibly in my design mind. Thank you. 🙏🏻
You are so welcome!
I personally love the black with green undertones. I think it looks best with red brick (or leans toward orange). I suppose that's why it also looks so good with medium wood tones and cognac colors.
I like black, dark green and dark blue. Especially dark blue because I'm a ravenclaw.
Thank you!!!!!
I’m HERE for it!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you
Please talk about black in furniture. I use black and would love some detailed discussion. Thank you
Do you have any specific questions or thoughts you're wondering about?
Is there a percentage of black in a room for furniture before it is too much? If you have a black dining table what else should you do in that room for balance. Best colors to go with black? How do you balance your eye with black because it dominates?
@Ninajohnson
You should watch the video again
Sarah answers all these questions :)
That was excellent information thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
I know super informative
I just did black accent wall behind my bed Love it . I wanting do accent wall in living room I’m having hard time picking which wall? 10:47 10:49 😊 10:55
Choose your plainest wall, try to not even use one with a window.
Do you have a favourite black in each blue, green, purple and brand of paint.
Yes, yes, yes!
You can definitely make it look amazing!
How do you feel about the color olive green? My bedroom is olive green with black and white bedding ,pillowsand curtains
You can make any green beautiful!
I really want to paint my garage ceiling black and the back of the metal roll up doors but I'm so nervous 😓
I feel like black goes too modern. I do have a black farmhouse door and black silhouettes on my walls. I am thinking about painting our fence black, the green plants would pop. Have a good day!
Oh, a black fence could be really lovely!
I am putting down black hexagon tiles in my kitchen what is the best cabinet color?
LOVE black hex
Periwinkle cabinets
What do you suggest we use for those high value, long term elements? Like tile and especially windows, specifically on their interior side.
Stick with classic choices that will stand the test of time!
Hi Sarah, are you running another class? When? For previous classes, any chance you have them taped and available on demand? I am planning to decorate our renovated 2,000 house black and white. Just saw your video today.
Hi! Are you asking about my on-going Behind the Scenes class (where we meet weekly), or my Pinterest class?
Registration opens on September 29th for my Behind the Scenes class (Link: finding-time-to-hold-dearly.teachable.com/p/behind-the-scenes ), and replays are available only to current members.
Registration is open now for my Pinterest class that begins on Sept 27th (Link to register: finding-time-to-hold-dearly.teachable.com/p/pinterest-like-an-interior-designer ). If you can't attend live you can still register and then you will receive the recorded classes each day after the live class ends.
Hope that helps!
More picture examples would have been helpful (e.g., television against black wall etc.)
Love your style!
May I ask what you think about Black exterior paint with white windows?
Thank you for your time, Simone Australia xx
I love black decor and our exterior doors and shutters are black but can’t do a black wall.
Can you add a black accent wall if you have grey walls? Or do they have to be white?
I wouldn't, I would switch the walls to white so it doesn't get too heavy.
I like the theatrical look, where the surrounding is black and the floor in the middle is bright. Most of the black rooms I've seen, painted everything in black and it's very hard to look at things.
Yep, too much of most anything can be over-powering!
I love your interior design solutions. I also work in the interior design industry in Vietnam. Give you 1 sub!!!🥰
Wait are you saying crittal doors and windows are going to date? 🙈
Sorry, not sure what you mean by "crittal"?
Quick question regarding your comment about black windows becoming dated. I was actually considering doing the black pane industrial look that you see lately. If that will easily become dated, can you suggest an alternative type of window that wouldn’t become dated?
I'd stick with white, and use shutters or other accents that are easier/far less expensive to change to get a more unique look if that's what you're going for! :)
How do I receive your thrift list?
