    Yep. RATGDO is 100% the way to go. I struggled with connectivity and reliability with the MyQ system. I had reached out early on and lent them some help. The original crew is gone and the Accountants and the C Suite idiots have run it into the ground.
    Switched to RATGDO over a year ago on my two openers. Took some network adjustments but after I added an Internet of things (IOT) network to my Wi-Fi It has been smooth sailing.

    The beeping and light flashing when the operator is about to close I believe is a law. It is supposed to give an audible and a visual cue that the door is about to close. They might want to think about that feature so they don't get sued if someone gets hurt. I know that might sound really stupid to a lot of people, but all it takes is one accident.

    Nice video found it by accident while looking around. Eventually, I will need a new garage door opener currently have an Amazon device tied into my Wi-Fi, which will let Google open and close the garage door. I see this won’t work directly with Google - that’s unfortunate.

  • @SteveJones172pilot

    I wish I had seen your video before I ordered, just for the wiring info, but yes, I agree 100%.. I am a new RATGDO32 owner, and LOVE it.. The beeping on closing is apparently a law that if you close the garage remotely, they have to alert first, which is annoying.. For the wiring, I am moving soon, so I connected mine with WAGOs on each wire and hooked mine up in parallel so when I move I can just pull the RATGDO off and take it with me to my new house. FWIW, I think the percentage open/close thing doesn't work at first because it TIMES how long it takes to fully open and close, and from that, figures out how long to let the motor run to get a percentage, and so it needs some historical data to know how long it takes to open/close before that feature works. I could be wrong, but if you look at the data provided by the app, the timing is all in there. Happy to say in my new house, my new garage door is never going to see the Internet since the RATGDO will controlling everything!! I dont know if you have CarPlay, but I'd be interested in seeing a video about creating an "open garage" button on the HA app on carplay. I've been playing with it a little and think I have it working, but the process of getting functions to work on carplay in HA these days doesn't seem to match all the tutorials I have seen, so I am wondering if what I did is the best way to do it or not..

    I took a different approach than ratgdo to automate my MyQ two-door garage. I used a Zooz ZEN16 relay, a pair of Zooz ZSE43 position sensors, and a pair of Chamberlain LM829 controllers to enable automation of door closings and to know door position. I realize this video is all about raging against Chamberlain, but the approach I used never touches or replaces their ecosystem. I just leveraged the capabilities they offered to bypass them and have full local control. My solution has no ability to open a garage door, and I like that limitation. I never want either of my doors opening without my manual intervention. Garage doors are a serious security threat. Mine never stay open long. I have a timer that closes them after a predetermined amount of open time.

  • @connomar55
    @connomar55 6 днів тому +2

    Does Google Home work with this? We used to have an automation set up that would tell the garage door to close when we said "Bedtime". MyQ via Google Home would say "I'll work on that" and if the door was open, it would close.

    • @_Caddac
      @_Caddac  6 днів тому +7

      Hello Jerry, your garage door only has 3 terminals instead of 4? If that's the case, your red should go to the left terminal, white to the middle, and black to the right terminal. You may have to use yours in the pigtail config instead of in-line like I did.

    I noticed at @9:12 you didn't have the device hooked up to any extra power. Is that right? I doesn't need to be plugged in to a power source to work? Or it draws power from the cables that you plug into it? I'm asking because a lot of the install pictures I see of the device always show it installed with a USB cable connected which I assume is for power.

    The reason for the screaming before closing via the app is a legal requirement and safety. Its to let people who might be in the way know that someone that isn't there is shutting the garage door so they have time to get out of the way.

      @@_CaddacI’m not defending Chamberlain when I say this, but the beeping and flashing when closing the door using a mobile app is a requirement for compliance with “UL 325: Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver, and Window Operators and Systems” which specifies 10 seconds of a combined audio/visual alert before a close operation. It’s not a legal requirement, but rather a requirement for manufacturers who want to slap the UL logo on their product.

      @_Caddac  День тому +1

      With HomeKit you can set up guest access pretty easily, with HomeAssistant there are a few different paths and you need to figure out which best suits your needs. My guests wouldn't want to download an app for the sole purpose of opening my garage door so the MyQ guest access thing kind of stinks for that. Right now I just set up guest codes for my front door access instead or tell them the pin code for the garage.

      1. Use the HA Cloud. This lets you access your homeassistant from the homeassistant app on your phone anywhere. (This is a subscription)
      2. If you use Apple Home, then there is a Homekit bridge integration that lets you share your HA devices with Apple Home. (This is entirely free, assuming you have Apple Home already setup)
      3. If you use Google Home, then the easiest way is via HA Cloud (subscription). If you are tech savvy and know how to create domain names, and SSL certificates (Maybe free)
      4. If you use Alexa, there are instructions, but a quick skim of them made me confuse. YMMV.

      This information regarding needing a subscription to use MyQ is incorrect. I’ve had a MyQ on my old house and now my new house, and never had a subscription. I don’t see anywhere in the app to even start a subscription.

      The basic functions are available without a subscription, for now. At any point Chamberlain can revolk that. I have constant ads to subscribe for video storage and "other premium capabilities".

    • @_Caddac
      @_Caddac  6 днів тому +6

      I talk about it at the end but yes, the main draw would be if you want it as part of your home automation. If your Internet is out, MyQ doesn't work anymore even when local whereas HomeAssistant will. Also it's about having your own control over the things you bought instead of a company forcing you to use their very poorly made proprietary software. You're at Chamberlain's mercy and they've proven time and time again that they are anti-consumer.

    Sure you all probably know this but this is why I don't want any smarts built into my GDO. Old school doorbell style switches are best, then you can implement your own low cost connected relay to integrate to your smart home hub of choice. Android Auto even has an app that allows buttons from home automation to be brought right to your dash screen, putting the button to control the door right on your cars infotainment screen.

    • @_Caddac

      Yeah, you're totally right, but many newer openers have features that are impossible to replicate with a simple switch. My Chamberlain having the features and sensors that it does allows my Ratgdo to provide me more control as well that I likely wouldn't get with a super basic GDO.
