One advantage aquaculture has over net fishing is the reduced risk of fishery collapse. An environmental consequence of aquaculture can be a disease outbreak in the farm, due to high-density populations, and this disease can be spread to wild populations causing an epidemic if any fish/organism can escape from the cage. This epidemic in turn will cause a decrease in biodiversity due to the deaths caused by the disease.
