  • In this episode 16, we share the stories of Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii and Te Wharekura o Rakaumanga in Aotearoa, two native schools with a rich history and strong cultural connections. These schools aren’t just educational institutions; they’re a testament to the power and resilience of native heritage, keeping language and culture alive through education.
We hear from Te Awa Manning, a Kamehameha alum and descendant of both Ngāti Raukawa and Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian), who reflects on how his education connected him deeply with his roots, hula, and opened up opportunities to embrace both heritages.
The kapa haka group, Āwhina i te Kaupapa, has been visiting Kamehameha for over 30 years. Their visits strengthen a unique bond, enhanced by a shared royal heritage through Kiingitanga and Ke Ali’i Bernice Pauahi.
Join us as we explore these powerful connections and the vibrant cultural exchanges between Hawaii and Aotearoa, showing how these schools continue to inspire and uplift their communities, fostering lasting connections between our monarchs.

Wonderful to see this international connection - hard not to be jealous as it seems they have less governmental opposition than us so their children are just allowed to thrive (glad for them though).
