- Installing a Mini Cylops wood burner in a ford transit van, if you've been thinking about having a fire in your van conversion I hope this helps!
If you’re looking to install a wood burner in a tiny home, narrow boat or van hopefully this video can help you.
This burner was purchased from Glastonbury wood burners, which you can find here: www.glastonburyburners.co.uk/ I’m not affiliated with this company and do not receive any commission from them, I’ve just purchased two of their wood burners and have found them to be great value and quality.
Here’s a list of things I used in the video:
Sikaflex: amzn.to/3PkjxcA
1000mm 4” Flue pipe: amzn.to/3iJusjU
500mm 4” Flue pipe: amzn.to/3FclseE
Deck seal: amzn.to/3HobwSh
Rain cap/wind cap: amzn.to/3Yr0GRF
Fire Cement: amzn.to/3VMxann
Roofing Screws 25mm: amzn.to/3Fkp3HL
Aluminium closer: amzn.to/3UP8CsT

Hi, thanks so much for producing this video! I've been searching for a step by step guide, and you've pulled it out of the bag! I'm hoping to spend the next few days installing a Windy Smithy burner into my van and I'm anxious! May I ask is that just fire board around the burner? I might have missed an episode where you fitted this? Thanks so much, Emma
Hey Emma! Thanks so much for the comment, it’s always great to hear when the videos have helped others 🙏 I didn’t actually do a video covering the fire board but I can happily do that if you need, I have a blog somewhere about it.. it’s called Hardie backer board, good luck with the install!
Very cool on several levels. One it is Glastonbury mini cyclops which I am ordering. Two, very thorough, fast forward on few parts. Three, you can install it yourself. As it is a very critical install, having it professionally installed by Cat Glasto's referral and shop in the same yard log burners are made. Cannot wait especially crazy cold UK winters. Thanks for video
Thank for this great video learned a lot for my wood stove
Great to hear that it helped! Thanks for the feedback :-)
New subscriber 😊
Nice video one thing when you put fire cement on the joint to connect one pipe to the other you don’t need to because the pipe fits so tight and firm just a few screws should be enough, when you pushed the pipes together the cement had know were to go but down into the fire.
Hey, thanks for the comment! You are correct, around 95% of it fell down the inside of the flue! So I won't be sealing that part next time :-)
Hi! Thanks for putting this video out, so helpful to have a step by step guide on how to fit a wood burner. I’m about to fit my mini cyclops into the van in the next few weeks. Can I ask how cold the temperatures was when you fitted? I’m a little worried the weather isn’t warm enough for the sealant to properly set. Thanks!
Hi Hayley, you’ll need to check the sealant you’re using for your install, the one I used was a minimum of 5 degrees C and it was around 7 when I applied.
Doesn’t your roof get hot because you haven’t used a twin wall pipe? Is it still ok without twin wall .
The fire has a baffle plate do flames aren’t going directly up the chimney, up around the ceiling it is warm but no where near as hot as the burner, there’s an aluminium surround providing space and no combustible materials close to the flue, the roof gets slightly warm but not hot.
Awesome video this is an absolute life saver thanks a bunch for making and sharing! :D
I can see you've got your burner next to the kitchen, I want to do the same but am confused as to what safety precautions need to be taken with regards to cooking equipment! What do you use? Is is safe to have a log burner and gas cooker in a van?
Any advice would be hugely appreciated, struggling to find info online!
Sorry Holly I didn’t realise you’d commented twice! I have hardy backer board around the fire which is a fire resistant cement board, you could also use aluminium, your air gaps will be very dependant on the materials around the fire and the output of your burner.
I have propane and a wood burner in the van, many do, if you ensure the gas system is regularly checked with all of the correct drop out vents in place then you should not have a problem.
Information is limited, try looking for narrow boat rules on wood burners as their a community that is somewhat catered for, a lot of people have strong views on not having wood burners in van conversions. I personally would be more worried about poor LPG installations in vans and poor electrical systems causing fires.
Always make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm installed, you can also get a tri gas 12v alarm which detects for LPG and some other gasses which is hard wired in.
Good luck :-)
Could you use head gasket sealer instead of silicone sealer ?
Great video my friend! We have a mini cyclops on the way and preparing to install. One question, are you using an insulated flue and is that necessary? Thank you so much for putting out such a great informative vid!
Hey Jonny, thanks for the feedback! Always great to know it helped someone :-) if you’re talking to a HETAS engineer they’ll most definitely say you do need to have an insulated flue, you don’t need to leave a very big gap when using insulated flues however I prefer using single wall, I’ve used it before and checked the heat around the roof and never had issues!
Ahh, just saw your Amazon links so no worries :)
Great video, just a quick question please. Why didnt you install any fireproof insulation between aluminium plate and roof? Thank you
I wanted to monitor the exact temp at that point so in time I will install some insulation there I just want to monitor the internal heat before choosing an insulation material.
hows been ..any problems ?..im thinking of putting one in but it is a lot of work..thanks for the upload
Hi Kelly, I haven’t had any issues at all with the wood burner, depending on your location/size of the van you may find you only use the wood burner for 1-2 months of the year, so it’s worth considering how much use it will get especially if space is an issue in your van
thanks for the reply..im in the uk ..and might end up having to live in my van for a bit as works drying up and i dont want to spend my lifes saving on rent...ive a big ELWB iveco daily so ive plenty of room..@@Aboutavan
also how much does your flue stick out the roof of your van (without the cap)? Ta!
About 20cm, just enough to go through the decktite and leave enough for the cap to mount on, I could have done around 15cm and still been ok.
Where can I buy a little wood burner like that?
Glastonbury wood burners it’s called the mini cyclops
I am at 248£ a month on gas bottles.
I think I need one
Oh and a wood near by
If you’re using normal exchange bottles then it may be worth looking at a Gasit bottle or a Gaslow system that should half your gas consumption and makes it easier when you travel Europe :-)
Make sure your insurance company knows and if it isn't an approved stove they won't cover you
Yes of course, each insurer has varying terms as well so it’s always worth checking what they are.
Then why would you tell them?
@@mikejones7145 you can tell them, Brentacre, Adrian Flux and Just kampers all offer cover for wood burning stoves.
Do you drive with the flu cap on?
Yes the flu cap always stays on :-) it has a couple of self tappers fixing it to the flue and it’s a female fitting so it won’t be coming off.
@@Aboutavan Thank you for your swift reply! ...and a great video! Greetz from Sweden!
