Good way to put it! I think it's also fun to consider paradigms under the lense of "acceptable methodology". We could have a paradigm shift by discovering something that furthers the understanding of the universe's creation further than the Big Bang Theory does with the same sort of Scientific Method, but we could also just as well find flaws in the ways we validate data and observe phenomenon and instead find new ways to conduct research that completely reshape our accepted view of epistomology! I'd love to hear what you'd have to say to this adjacent definition!
You are totally right about the other definition - I'm always afraid someone will bring this up! I stayed with the most basic definition because I'm often talking about very general topics in the history of science. Good catch!
I would say that you need a field school, but you will also need more than a history major if you wanted to make it a career (anthro classes). If you just want to go on a dig sometime, almost anyone can do that.
