Very thorough description. t seems as though a lot of thought went into the original design of this lathe. It's nice to see, considering that many tools are shipped these days, half-baked.
Thank you... I am keen to create a place where owners of the Unimat SL can come and get information. I agree the design is very good and 60 - 70 years old.
I've just restored two of these lathes which have sat in a cupboard for 30 years. Amazed to find no corrosion and both are as new! These things were made before CAD and other 'modern' manufacturing methods. Though both my examples are the same; close inspection reveals they were hand made by proper craftsmen. I can see why people collect them; craftsmanship from a bygone age. They are lovely things just to look at.....a perfect desk top toy. Yet they have so much potential. I've just stripped my Unimat 3. Not so decorative but well engineered. The SL and the 3 are like chalk and cheese; both are wonderful in their own way.
Hi, Thanks for visiting... I would tend to agree that they were a quality build as there are so many of them around after all these years... I have not had any experience with the Unimat 3 but would like to sometime in the future... Take care Paul,,
Hi Poppy's workshop, Thank you for visiting. Quite a few people have said they have fond memories of time with a Unimat. The Sherline sounds good, very nice machines. Take care Paul,,
Gday Paul, it doesn’t look that small until you put in beside the can, it will be great if you can get all the attachments overtime, great video mate thanks, take care. Matty
Hi Matty, I know, photos and video's make it look a lot bigger... Hopefully anyone watching my videos will get a sense of size. Some of the attachments look really good fun and will hopefully make entertaining videos. Take care Paul,,
Interesting video and lathe Paul. The tailstock looks better than my Sherline offering. I see neither has provision foe centre line adjustment. Having said that, these small lathes really are gems and the mine's bigger than yours brigade really do miss out by being so narrow minded. Enjoy. Cheers Rob
Hi Rob, Thank you for visiting and subscribing... I got the idea of the small lathe after watching your restoration of the Sherline. Error correction on these tiny lathes looks like it will be a challenge, once i start scrubbing it up i should start to get a feel for how good or bad it is. I am looking for an additional lathe, something more like yours, it was interesting watching your review a few weeks ago... I have seen one i like but it's currently out of stock and does stretch the budget quite a lot. Time will tell on that one. Take care Paul,,
'move the drill out' (2:59)' - no, you follow normal lathe practice- when you run out of travel, you advance the tailstock and continue. As a fellow youtuber, can I offer some advice? I find a short-form script helps the flow, so that things are neither missed nor repeated. It also reduces pauses, umms and arrs. Most editing software makes it easy to remove hesitations and other errors, speeding up the flow and watchability. When showing a part such as in this video, selecting manual focus on your camera prevents the autofocus constantly shifting focus to the background. Editing is important, and can take longer than the filming. It sometimes reveals the need to redo a section, for clarity or other reason. Please understand that this is not put forward as criticism, but a genuine desire to help. YT tends to be dominated by the 'big boys' with huge followings, at the cost of smaller channels like ours- we need to fight back! Keep up the good work...
Hello, the tail stock on my unimat seems to be off centre. I have aligned the headstock with the bed by sliding the indicator on the slide along the bed. However it’s still offset horizontally be 1mm. Just wonder did you experience similar problem?
Hello, I would guess that it has been assembled the wrong was round, I have done it myself and the alignment is wrong... If I am correct you will need to disassemble it and rebuilt it the right way round. I hope that is of help. Take care. Paul,,

Hello Mike,
Many thanks for the tips... I am always happy to hear suggestions on how I can improve things... Thanks again.
Take care.
Paul,,
The jacobs chuck looks giant in comparison to the complete tail stock :-)
Hi Craig,
The chuck is an original one... 0 - 6.5mm. I know what you mean about not looking balanced.
Take care
