    This is such a good primer for me. Cantonese was my first language. But from lack of use I have forgotten it for 40 -50 years. Everything is coming back with your primer. Thank you so much!

    I am surprised of seeing cantonese being one of your collections here because cantonese is not a popular language for foreigners. This language is one of the hardest languages to learn so I really appreciate those who are trying to learn it. I hope this language can be spread over the world :)

      I mean, it isnt hard when its your MAIN language it is mine and to me its very easy, but with Mandarin it is hard for me to learn it

      It's easier than mandarin because it doesn't require a lot of pronouncing it correctly.

    My husband is Cantonese. 🙈 we communicate in English but I definitely want to learn his language so I can talk to his family members. (My mother in law only speaks Cantonese) 😅

    Malaysian here ✌🏻
    can speak Mandarin & Hokkien,
    also can listen to 70%-80% of Cantonese, but can only speak a little of Cantonese only because I’m always confused with Hokkien & Cantonese 😂 舌頭打結

    Thank you for this. Very useful! One feedback might be make the English voice slightly lower volume. I found that the English felt loud enough to be disruptive and the cantonese volume to be low enough to make it hard to hear. This forced me to increase volume and then English was too loud and hard to sleep.

    My ex was a Canto speaker, and I actually picked up a few words and phrases quite easily. But I also speak Mandarin and Taiwanese, so I already have a leg up.

      @@dumalun8388 Yes, all three are quite similar--if you're familiar with European languages, I would say they are about as similar as French, Spanish, and Italian are. I would say Cantonese and Taiwanese are more similar to each other though, than either one are to Mandarin.

      The main reason is that Cantonese is a spoken (vernacular) language which cannot be written properly with Chinese characters.

      Jn Vc my whole family and relatives are Cantonese but me and my two bothers still speak Cantonese after 13 to 15 years 😂. When we came to America, I learn English in 1 - 2 years which was easy because of Spanish... damn.... it’s hard to learn Chinese ;-;

    Cantonese in Hong Kong is dominant or predominant. I always say that it is the most Supreme language for the fear that I may upset the Hong Kong people. Hong Kong is the only former British colony that doesn't speak English. So we can see how important and held in high esteem English is in HongKong.

      I speak both Cantonese and Vietnamese fluently, the Vietnamese language was derived from Chinese, therefore, they sound somewhat similar.

      Yup. Mình biết. My grandparents are Chinese but I was born in Vietnam and they passed away too early so I never get to learn Cantonese.

      The problem with Cantonese is that you can not write down words or phrases because pinyin does not apply to Cantonese. How do you remember what you have learned?

      The number are tones. Cantonese is a tonal language like Mandarin, yet Cantonese has more tones.

    I was wondering if anyone knows how different Taiwanese Mandarin is from both Cantonese and "Common" Mandarin. I was told by my Professor that it is a child of the Fujianese dialect. Cantonese vaguely reminds me of my friend speaking tagalog sometimes btw. Any thoughts on that?
