A very informative video and a great project.
Holy cow! Only Paul Sellers takes himself more time to explain everything the way you do. *Good*
This is a very sturdy and attractive bench. I like that you show us the occasional mistake/correction/design revision, as these can be quite instructive for folks like me that are still learning. I also like that you aren't devoted to perfect joinery, as this can be discouraging for a lot of typical hobbyists. I recently built a mini workbench with detachable Moxon vise and tool well, and I'm very happy with it. I used ideas from several UA-cam videos including yours, so thanks for your help!
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for!!
You're welcome!
John, great video again. It was really engaging, just the right balance of chat and work.
I’m just about to start my own mini-work bench, slightly different design but I now know it’s going to be worthwhile.
Ken from Southport UK
Great little workbench! I´m also building one and will copy some of your ideas. Thanks for the video.
Brilliant, enjoyed watching and learning.
Glad you enjoyed it
Don’t worry, you’re doing a good job.
Thanks!
Very kind thank you
Nice job! Good work with the video too. Great info for a novice like myself. Keep it up, I'll be following. Thank you!
Very welcome Ken
That looks the business man. You're not talking to much Hahaahahhaha . Looking forward to the next one !!!
Thanks Emmet I tend to ramble on lol
I thought you were building a workbench not a bomb shelter...damn that thing looks sturdier than my house.
LOL, it definitely looks sturdy
Nice project, John. It looks very good.
Thank you for your video gifts.
You are welcome
Great design, enjoyed the videos, good job 👍
Thanks 👍
Great build mate.
Thanks man
Thanks mate ….good one great vid. I have sourced timber. Just gotta make sawdust !
You are welcome, enjoy making it!!
More details in ataxhing vice would be great
Awsome piece , you are a very talented wood worker , my diversion is leather work . Lee Valley seems to have made it to Ireland !
I'm just an amateur but thanks for the kind words
Can I please have the measurements and type of wood for tiny moxon please reply
The old adage goes that application of linseed oil to a new bare wood item should be once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, then once a year for life. Might be good idea here too. =)
Looks good but how do you fasten it to the top. Seems like the bottom piece should have extended past the legs so you could clamp it to the bench,
I enjoyed watching your build. I'm not a hand tool guy most of the time, but I'm wondering if that kind of bench might still be useful to me. My shop is very small and I work just outside of the door often.
That’s awesome. I wonder if tradespeople would be a good market for making a for sale version of this with a moxon vise? Maybe finish carpenters or plumbers would find this useful in their vans or trucks? What are your thoughts/experience on that?
You don't need a shoulder plane for that. You can use your existing router plane.
Great video John. I'm a new subscriber that built a mini workbench last year too. I made a stand for it this year so I can take it into the garden to work on sunny days. As for drilling vertical dog holes. Is that not a drill stand behind your left on the shelf? Nice quality videos. I'm looking forward to going through your past ones.
Lee Valley sells steel guides that you press into a hole in a piece of wood to drill dog holes. Keeps every nice and square!
I'll buy one I'm half way through college nthis will be perfect I got no work space need practice but ur bench will fit any we're please send me the invoice and information rather wall nut with the ash
Nice. I'd be proud of that. I did wonder why the dramatic music appeared for trimming vice Jaws! Is it stable enough when working? I would probably want the legs locating into dog holes for stability. Fortunately I'm only short and a regular bench does me fine!
Music was an editing error it's good and solid lol
Hey! Awesome piece!
If I may, the video did get a little long, and it would be awesome if you could lower the volume for us when you get your hearing protection on.
About the piece, I think I would've went ahead and get a smaller vise, but I understand your motivation to use what you had. Isn't it too off balance with all that weight on that side?
And also would the stretcher tenons suffer too much if you took 3/4 inches from the bottom, so you could have got away with the through tenon? That might have done the trick.
Thanks for the ideas on the project! You did great with the explanations so don't worry about that :)
Its an older video the editing has gotten a bit better , glad you liked the build
I have a question for everyone! I’m limited in space right now (apartment) there’s enough space in the maintenance garage for me to keep all my tools in but can’t work out of it so the driveway has become my workshop. Already have a miter and circular saw. What would be the best investment for power tools in this sub par situation? I was thinking maybe a track saw with table system?
Nice build. How do you secure it to your bench to keep it from moving around?
its heavy so usually I don't have to but when I do clamp it to the bench
Do you find that you need to clamp it or use holdfasts to hold it on your bench to stop it from moving?
Only if I'm planing aggressively, its heavy so doesn't move to much.
I think it would actually be easier to bore those dog holes with a brace and bit rather than a power drill.
Hi John, did you ever get to make some that you would sell?
Never got round to it.
That was a struggle to edit
