Les Holroyd was the vocalist. Wholly Westenholme sang Mockingbird. He also sings SHE SAID. John Lees sings Summer Soldier. Yes, they have 3 lead singers.
As has probably been said here before, their second album (Once Again) is the most celebrated of their early albums recorded for the Harvest label, though each of the four has its moments, and in fact they recorded some lovely tunes on the singles they issued in 1968-69. You should definitely hear She Said, Mockingbird, After the Day. In ‘73 they signed to Polydor and ‘sacked’ the orchestra. The series of albums from 74-78 were much more commercially successful, partly owing to the band tightening up the songwriting and having much ‘smoother’ arrangements, production and vocal sound. Only Wooly Woolstenhume’s compositions maintained a Prog edge, and the likes of Ra, and Sea of Tranquility are my favourites from this period. Not only were they dubbed the Poor Man’s Moody Blues but by ‘76 they were doing tunes like Rock n Roll Star, which musically, is basically a re-tread of One of These Nights by The Eagles. Wooly left at the end of the 70s but BJH carried on, getting increasingly bland to my ears. They became huge in Germany. I saw them play the Concert on the steps of the Reichstag in Berlin, close to the wall, in 1980. Very hot day and the German crown went bananas the entire time, but glop like Hymn, and Life is For the Living did nothing for me 🤔 Btw, a live 1974 double album sums up their early period beautifully and in fact i much prefer the ‘orchestra-free’ versions of She Said and Mockingbird (with Mellotron taking up the slack), to the overly fussy arrangements on the studio albums. It was as if because they had an orchestra at their disposal then they thought they needed to fill each and every second with blaring brass flourishes or swoops of strings or percussion tinkling and plinking. The ‘74 live versions have much more power and aren’t swamped by the trumpet fanfares and tympani bangs that have the originals staggering around on overloaded, unsteady legs. Just my opinion of course 😁 One overlooked fave of mine is Child of Man, the B side of 1972 non-album 45 I’m Over You. Child of Man has a great drum sound and splendid guitar riff. Always loved it. And going back even further, there’s Pools of Blue, which was considered as, i think, their second single but was left unreleased for decades until it appeared on a compilation. It’s a beautiful, mellotron laced track. Fabulous stuff. So many wonderful UK bands back then, for instance The Strawbs. Have you heard them? If not then try Sheep, Grave New World, Tears and Pavan, Hero and Heroine, Autumn and many more. Then there’s Fairfield Parlour…try Emily or Drummer Boy of Shiloh from their album From Home To Home, or Epitaph-Angel, the climax of their White Faced Lady concept album (released under their previous name, Kaleidoscope). Also, try dipping into some of the UK psych gems that followed on from the Beatles and Floyd. A few to start with: Pretty Things-Defecting Grey Kaleidoscope-The Sky Children One in a Million-Fredereek Hernando Jason Crest-Turquoise Tandem Cycle Tintern Abbey- Vacuum Cleaner Mike Stuart Span-Children of Tomorrow Flowerpot Men-Mythological Sunday Plastic Penny-Your Way To Tell Me Go A few off the top of my head. Dozens more to discover. 👍
Love a lot of their music. I found them from my love for the Moody Blues. BJH is known as ‘ the poor man’s Moody Blues’. I can see why listening to this😊 love this! My personal favorite is Ursula and Taking Some Time On. Hymn is also a great cut! Enjoy😊
Poor man's Moody Blues! Looking forward to this. Love them. They are not only good...they are good-looking! Y'all did Mockingbird before: ua-cam.com/video/6JrMylKBwOM/v-deo.html I just went and listened to all of it again, and it is just as beautiful as ever. Narvik is a genius. Wishing Narvik and their family all the best.
I see why BJH has been called The Poor Man's Moody Blues. The Moody Blues had moved away from full orchestra by 1970, relying more on the mellotron, but the spoken word and flute is definitely present. Speaking of Moody Blues, you and Alexa need to return to side 2 of Days of Future Passed, since you love this type of sound and you did side 1 in its entirety in your Moody Blues marathon for KaiS. I can't financially afford to sponsor a marathon, but hopefully this will spur someone else to do so, or spark y'all's curiosity to return to it without one. I would strongly suggest relistening to side 1 just before "flipping the album over," so you're put back into the concept.
@nickandlex Trying to find a place to request. Please check out Parcels (band) they are described as if Daft Punk and Steely Dan had a kid. Your welcome
Hi again .. This is the debut album that was unfortunately not too well received. It actually sounds nothing like the Barclay James Harvest we have all come to know and love. Totally removed from the rock band with this orchestral extravaganza that the band members dropped due to such poor sales. They still used an orchestra for future albums but not like this. It's the album "Everyone is Everybody else" that really hit the charts with soaring sales giving the group the recognition they deserved. It is a corker of an album. From then on they just went from strength to strength and are amazing live. They are first and foremost a rock band. Byee Jim X
Yes but they got their video blocked and taken down. I have to check the legality of this. I don't know if you can just react to music in a live setting and get paid for it. Is that what they do? Check their link ..it was taken down by UA-cam admins.
@@NicknLex I feel like a traitor kind of fascist.......for me anyone may earn big box. But i cant stand it other nice people don't get nothing unaware of what is going on. After the live stream is over.........they simple remove it. They also used some paysite so not all the gifts were on the screen. I dont know exact time of their live streams in your time zone..........You can check that out.....i am in Europe. For me located in the Netherlands Europe its around 4 at night. I stop the gossip.
As a fan of BJH I always find it sad that they never got the recognition that deserve.
I feel the same.
Hi Nick , Omg ! Barclay James Harvest !!!! Absolutely love this group !!! [ Just about to play ] byee Jim X

You need to react to their second album that is the best they did.. the song She said is perfection.
Now its time to listen to more BJH & then put your favourite album on the rack behind you... Its TIME!
Hi Nick, think you reacted to Mocking Bird a few weeks ago, would recommend She Said & Ra so be interesting to see what else is requested!

No bueno this song is wasted
I love Taking some Time on. Quite different from most other BJH songs.
Good choices. But the Moodys never cut a song as epic as this one.
awesome, I discovered BJH the same time as YES, you only need to discover T2 to complete my journey...not that youll ever be able to find them
