  • Welcome back friends! In this episode we give the engine rebuild a break and get started on the repaint of Nigel's panels, which is a mammoth task of its own! We used primer and paint from BCS Auto Paints and completely recommend them.
    So far, so good...but we'll see how long that lasts ;)

    Great that you're doing yourself. From what I've seen in your fitout episodes I think that you are very capable to do a great job. There are good trick to undo rusty bolts. First spray them with something ! Wd40 for example . Work the spanner in both directions slightly loosening then slightly tightening and gradually loosening more than tightening. If that doesn't work then use heat. Good luck with the rest of the job!

      Thanks for the tips Jason. I've definitely been using all those tricks in my arsenal but boy oh boy is it hard work with some of those awkward positions. hahaha

    Had the same problem with the doors. As someone else mentioned, the bolts of the upper section have rusted into the lower door. I struggled for many hours to free them but in the end, I took the easy way out and replaced the door.

    For painting prep is the key! honestly, the spar gun and compressor is not that bad once you do a few tet sprays.
    To stop the bolts in the doors rusting, remove regularly and grease, pretty much the only way. When we did the last re-door topping on the old Series 2, we had to retube it as the whole stud had rusted and swelled.
    Never seen anyone take the dash off with a grinder, and been doing Series and Defenders for 30 years nearly...

      Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to try and stay on top of them.
      And yeah riv-nut in the bulk head was stuck and the bolt was half unthreaded and was just spinning round and around. haha. Not sure of any other way to get it out other than nip the head off.

    I would call the CH Tafe and see if they have a panel beating class and see if they will let you use their facilities. I'm in CH, great part of the country. 🙂

    I did mine properly for a few hundred bucks. It was an Australian army 109. You get the paint from Protec and it goes through a cheap spray gun easily. Get a few rattle cans for touch ups.

    Use copper ease when refitting. Also make sure you have new seals in between the upper and lower door assembly

    Grab hob, looking good guys. With those nuts that were rusted, you can get a product called never seize, might help coating them in never seize when you reassemble the doors

    Maybe consider polishing it with a good wax to seal the paint and protect the paint, unless you used a clear coat. Waxing and buffing is a good protective layer.

    • @KendallandGlenn
      @KendallandGlenn  5 місяців тому

      That's great! It's a bit of a slog but nice that it's all just bolted together. Plenty of rust and dirt in all of them, and some fiddly angles to remove them but all in all not terrible. haha

  • @matthewmuller9418
    @matthewmuller9418 6 місяців тому +1

    You can try and just wire brush/wheel the rusted threads, rust converter of some kind and then spray some zinc spray over them probs won’t last for ever but just prolong how quick it rusts back

    • @matthewmuller9418
      @matthewmuller9418 6 місяців тому +1

      Would also spray some cavity wax in all the door cavities and all the others you can get into just to help stop moisture sitting in all the internals
