  • This is a 1993 documentary exploring Irish Traditional Music in New York city. It focuses on people who left our shores on one way tickets to the big apple in the 1920's and 1930's and created a lonely departure back home, at a time when technology was not like it is now. Many of those people played Irish music or learned to play, as it was a connection with home. Irish traditional music is loved and appreciated the World over. Unfortunately that wasn't always the case, particularly back home where it was often ridiculed, scoffed at and frowned upon by people who had no music in their heads at all.
That has all changed for the better. Foreign visitors who come to Ireland now ask where they can here Irish trad music, and that's welcome.

A wonderful documentary full of legendary names from Irish Traditional Music from the golden years of the early 20th century up to the 1990's. It also features interviews with Michael Coleman's daughter and James 'Lad' O'Beirne's son.

Omgosh... the greatest music teacher ever.... Maureen Glynn. She was my accordion teacher in nyc when I was around 5-6 years old. I don't know why but for some reason she wasn't my teacher anymore. I think now how good I would've been if I was still going. Very sad to me now that I think of it. May she rest in peace. My father says Johnny Cronin was the best fiddle player ever.

The "American Wake" was very much part of Irish life. Prior to the 1950s parents and grandparents bade a final farewell to their children and grandchildren. Much of Irish tradition survived in America. This is a very interesting look-back on Ireland's reconnection with its Yankee branch. Thank you.

Thanks for posting...Wonderful documentary. My first intro. to Irish Trad.Music in America was from the great radio programs Ciarán Mac Mathùna recorded on his visits to the States in the late 50's/early 60's...The above documentary is a treasure.
