Good review! I appreciate the work and effort you put into covering this. I remember Electronic Gaming Monthly covering this game in a preview. Must have been 2001 or so. Keep up the good work and I'll be sure to keep an eye on your channel as you grow :)
Haven’t played this game, but it definitely looks interesting. Too bad that the story doesn’t make much sense within the lore, some features are clearly unfinished, and is jank at times. I’m sure I’d have fun if I look past the fact that bullets shouldn’t be able to kill the smaller things. I’d be perfectly fine with human enemies since they’d add variety into the game. It’s so weird how we haven’t had any other games set in The Thing’s setting. There’s a lot of really cool things they could do with a monster whose tactics revolve around concealment, infection, and transforming into all manner of twisted abominations when threatened. The themes of paranoia with humans who can freak out and turn on you has a lot of potential. I’d want to see a game where the Thing has a modular design, human’s don’t trust you or each other, and having a large degree of procedural generation in the base’s layout. That would be cool. Apparently, there was a cancelled sequel, but that sadly fell through. Great video. I’ll probably check your other stuff out.
Thanks a lot, mate! Yeah, it's certainly not a perfect game, but it's nice to see some actual effort was put in, even if the results were mixed.. I'd say John Carpenter would want a other game, but who knows how much it would cost, and who would approve it!
The Thing is honestly one of the best licensed games out there. I CAN understand why some might not like it, but it pulls off the tension and paranoia the original film mastered whilst doing its own thing for gameplay purposes, plus it controls really well and has creature designs on par with the film. It does get ball-bustingly hard, however, particularly during the sections with auto turrets and tripmines. Horror gamers have never lived until they've taken an ally's blood test and discovered that The Thing is learning to bypass it through one of the surprise scripted transformations.
Yeah, it's atmosphere is one of its strongest aspects, and the turret sequences can get a little frustrating if you've spent all your health packs! The creature designs show that the developers actually cared about what they were making, and the controls are actually pretty comfortable once you find what works!
I bought and beat this exact version for the first time maybe 6 months ago so its fairly fresh in my memory. This game is flat out cheap in random parts and just oddly paced all around. I want to say i overall liked the overall game but i definitely walked away feeling like the whole of it entirely missed the film as well as any tension. By yhe airplane hangar section youre basically knowing to just cheap enemies out by getting them stuck and locking on and gunning them down, assuming everyone will transform, shooting first. Hell the flamethrowerr is practixally useless until you realize "oh. He shoots at the ground first and not steaight forward unless your in the fps perspectives" Overall though i like it if only for a single playthrough once in a blue moon.
Yeah, it's definitely lacking in a lot of areas, and getting used to how the flame thrower works was a little frustrating at first. This was my first time playing the game, and I'd probably give it another go at some stage!
I played this religiously on ps2 and loved it for its unique mechanics and atmosphere at the time especially the trust mechanic, yet years later i realized my only gripe after seeing reviews is how the transformations are all scripted so you know who it is. I found myself purposely taking weapons back from certain people beforehand. Nowadays if they want they could be able to have it random to make replayability unique and if a mechanic you needed turned out to be a Thing, it would mean taking an alternate route to progress.
Yeah, it's a really undercooked mechanic that could have been brilliant! There's so much here that could be refined, and tightened up for modern audiences!
@@THHDReviews I forgot that's usually the case nowadays since I remember a while back that companies never seem to port over old games that have licenses tied to movies or other IP.
I am truly in awe at how your MK1 Xbox 360 STILL works. I went through 4 of those back in the 2000s. Thats amazing man! Great review!
She red ringed on me once over 10 years ago, then never again since!
I've had more issues with PS2s..
Cheers! Haha
@@THHDReviewsI had 3 of those as well. Same reason lol

Cheers mate,
This game deserves some attention for its effort, and I'd love to see another game on the series!

It's certainly luck of the draw if anyone will watch the videos! Haha
Warp to now and Nightdive Studios are remastering this. That will be cool to see.
Yeah, I saw, and am very surprised!
I thought this would forever be in licenced game hell.. haha
Great vid man! Cant wait to see more old school video game reviews!
Cheers, mate!
Next game we're going to Mars! Haha
Just found this channel. Amazing videos

Cheers mate, it's fun covering these old games and share the experience!
I never was able to beat the game
There's definitely a few tough sections throughout, and it's super easy to die.. if not from the monsters, it'll be the bloody flame thrower! Haha

@@THHDReviews surprised no one has even tried a fan remake or sequel of sorts since this hasn't been ported to new consoles since.
@@Animeman1993 yeah, I imagine porting it over has all sorts of legal issues!

They are making a remaster of this game if I’m not mistaken .
@@Thebroshow13 yeah, I was quite surprised they announced it, I thought it would be stuck in licenced game limbo! Haha
This was as good as playing it myself right?
Depends how well you adapt to crusty old game design! Haha
The game is worth a look though..
pls more content about OG XBOX or another retro games!
I've definitely got more OG XBOX games planned!
@@THHDReviews cool. I hope so. greets from germany.
