one of the greatest debuts, this movie is a masterpiece. It's unique, coherent and real. They tried to make a good movie that satisfies themselves first, not others, i.e. no Fs given to average viewers' expectations and ticket sales. The result is it has a 6.9 rating on IMDB as of 2019.
I really liked this. there's a tendency for a lot of westerns to be very long, languid and atmospheric [which is good sometimes but can be incredibly dull] but this is short as hell yet packs so much in. So many great moments; the encounter with the Swedish couple and the subsequent reveal that Ben eluded to was effectively shocking. I just loved it from start to finish, clear, concise storytelling done with style & the real points about native Americans is weaved into the whole thing very well As well as the Coen Brothers, I also got a Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man vibe from some parts [Ben Mendelsohn's character, who's great, could've been played by Iggy Pop I thought] I've watched this on demand on my laptop but I know for a fact it's showing at my local cinema at the end of this month so I'll definitely go to see it on a big screen. :)
Reviewers need to do their research. Maclean wanted to shoot initially in Colorado but chose to shoot in New Zealand because Fassbender's schedule is so full he was only available for the shoot during the month of November. So Maclean chose New Zealand because during our hemisphere's winters it summer down there which he needed for the look of the film.
I saw it with way too high expectations. It was alright. Tonally, it was all over the place. Very picturesque though. If you like movies with a clash between really dark elements and lighthearted Wes Anderson-ish stuff, you'll like it. Could have been great, but it's fine for someone's first feature film. I'd give it a 6, maybe 7 on a good day.
Ronin Dave We shouldn't all be grouped in with those that wronged them, phrases like "what we did to them" offend me, not only did I personally do nothing but my neither did my ancestors were are too recently immigrated to have been apparent of such things. I resent being held accountable for the sins of people from hundreds of years ago just because we have the same colour skin.
Man, I must be the only one that didn't find this movie funny at all. Not a sigle part of it. I was suprised to saw in the comments and the review that oppinion. Great movie tho, very diferent and artistic for his kind. 8/10. (Pd: I know no one will read ore care for my comments. It's been 3 years... If you are reading.... hi :) )
I liked that we have a modern western where a main antihero makes a good decision and actually doesn't die in the end. Usually guys like Fastbender's man always get killed.
Tal Moore Well, beyond her looks, she actually reads the books & watches the movies. Then there is Ben. He sounds great when he speaks. But, he sees, probably, 1 in ten movies. He should stay with TYT where he seems to be more comfortable.
After seeing this review, I decided to stream this movie. It wasn't excellent, but indeed very good. However, one funny issue I found with it was with the kid that plays the character Jay. He resembles the comedy actor Jay Baruchel so much that the whole time I couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching the dude from Tropic Thunder and Knocked Up.
Seems like it has enough nuance to make an interesting view. Also, I'm obliged to say it whenever Fassbender comes up... but he should have replaced Craig as James Bond like 3 movies ago.
helloitonoff Cormac McCarthy, you mean the author of one of the greatest books of all time, and another book that was adapted to one of the greatest movies of all time? His name made you not want to see a movie?
helloitonoff The Counselor was a shitty adaptation by Ridley Scott. Not exactly MacCarthy's fault. No Country for Old Men is simply one of the best films of the 21st century and won best picture and best adapted screenplay, so I suppose that's just your loss.
Why is there this thought that all films that take place in beautiful places need to be filmed in New Zealand? I love New Zealand, but it is starting to get to be the point that people assume that there is no beauty left outside of there. Japan still has gorgeous scenery (Last Samurai), and for "Big Sky Country" (as in this film), you could, I don't know, actually go to "Big Sky Country" in Montana, which is definitely not some industrialized wasteland. Now if there are financial reasons, I get that, it is a business and you need to make the smart/profitable decision, but this idea that it couldn't be filmed in the American West today is just plain foolish.
+kingleech16 i agree there is a lot of beautiful places out there (though New Zealand does have the advantage they have a lot concentrated into a small area) but just wanted to correct you, much of Last Samurai was actually filmed in New Zealand lol
Glen B That was my point, Last Samurai could have been filmed in Japan and looked just as pretty (just watch the opening scene from Ran), but folks seem to think you need to go to the ends of the earth to find a pretty place to film.
Studios film where they feel they can get best value for money. This is why most movies are filmed in Canada. Tax benefits and close to home. New Zealand, Australia and other places also offer studios tax incentives. A lot of nations do not, or offer less value. That is why they are filmed there. That why movies about New York for example are rarely filmed in New York, but usually Toronto.
I liked this movie and this goes to show you that bitches will get you in trouble. Reminds me of the old western Fassbender is great in this....The Hound from GoT as the father is good too.
1:51 Spoilers: The Hound survived and moved from Westeros to the West
Why did you have to say that
Jean-Luc Narcisse Jk m9. He's in the trailer. Although that is partly a theory in the books
Spetsnaz Beaver And then soon dies.
Dude got shot by the girl who put him in the friendzone. 🤷🏿♂️
EA R facts wtf
👎🏿
She didn't knew it was him, I think Colas loved Jay more than her, if Jay stayed in the tree he wouldn't been shot. I cried like a baby when he died.
Then got literal and figurative salt in the wound like dang kid

Gotta love the Fassbender. He consistently kills it.

Well said
Fassbender doesn't make a bad movie. That's why i'm glad he's in charge of the Assassin's Creed movie.
***** it may not be his movie, but that Jonah Hex was some crap that he was in.
helloitonoff Fuck that movie, man. Fassbender, Malkovich, Michael Shannon and Josh Brolin, yet they managed to mess it up so bad.
ZeppelinBigFan uh, forgot about Megan Fox, ha ha! but you are right, they messed that movie up big time.
helloitonoff Don't remind me... I was just getting over her horrible accent.
Jeansie he made a bad movie. #AssassinsCreed
I didn't expect to like this movie, but it was really good.

This film's compositions and photography look utterly stunning and a western that is short in time, I'm in.
Ah, Ben's white guilt never fails.
Alexander Forbes so we shouldn't feel bad for what happened to native americans?
Ronin Dave We shouldn't all be grouped in with those that wronged them, phrases like "what we did to them" offend me, not only did I personally do nothing but my neither did my ancestors were are too recently immigrated to have been apparent of such things. I resent being held accountable for the sins of people from hundreds of years ago just because we have the same colour skin.
Alexander Forbes but you have benefited from their actions
Ronin Dave So have black people, Chinese people, East Indians, and yes, even Natives themselves.
Alexander Forbes and all of them were discriminated against and were not descended from those who killed and stole the land

How the fuck does Christy get better looking with time?
Tal Moore Well, beyond her looks, she actually reads the books & watches the movies. Then there is Ben. He sounds great when he speaks. But, he sees, probably, 1 in ten movies. He should stay with TYT where he seems to be more comfortable.
This movie is a real romance flick. Most woman you fall in love with and will do anything for. Will not do the same for you.
And ending up shacking with another man who was going to kill her for bounty $. Definitely a true to life flick.
I thought the ending was bullshit immediately fucking the dude like that
Yeah but it was never explicitly said that they were in love so

So true! Doppelganger!
If you want another colorful 'western', check out Jauja. One of the most gorgeous film I've ever seen
Reminds me of Rdr2
The boy actor was on the australian tv show Gallipoli
vanidar21 Kodi Smit-McPhee? He was also in The Road and Let Me In.
John Maclean, former keyboardist in The Beta Band. Brother of David Maclean, drummer for Django Django. And most definitely a Scot not a Kiwi.
The New Studio you guys are filming at, looks kinda cheap...
Seems like it has enough nuance to make an interesting view.
Also, I'm obliged to say it whenever Fassbender comes up... but he should have replaced Craig as James Bond like 3 movies ago.
Very impressed with this. Outstanding and boy the natural world was once so beautiful...
This movie has some incredible twists huh
I would recommend, it's a great movie
Never heard of this, but I am intrigued...
Is that so...
Yes it is...
shit, for some reason this went totally under my radar...
black coffee Me too and I'm a fassbender fan
nenabunena He's very good.
There is no analysis in this video. So, what the flick guys? Really, what are the thoughts in your videos?
True Grit revisited?
almost made me not want to go see this when I heard Cormac McCarthy, but it's showing where I live and it's Michael Fassbender, so I'll be there.
helloitonoff Cormac McCarthy, you mean the author of one of the greatest books of all time, and another book that was adapted to one of the greatest movies of all time? His name made you not want to see a movie?
***** yes
helloitonoff What's wrong with Cormac MacCarthy's name then?
***** didn't care for No Country for Old Men and, after watching The Counselor, I am not wasting my time on anything based on his novels or ideas.
helloitonoff The Counselor was a shitty adaptation by Ridley Scott. Not exactly MacCarthy's fault. No Country for Old Men is simply one of the best films of the 21st century and won best picture and best adapted screenplay, so I suppose that's just your loss.

I gotta go check this out
Why is Ben a movie critic?? he never likes anything he seems to purposely pick apart movies.
I liked this movie and this goes to show you that bitches will get you in trouble. Reminds me of the old western Fassbender is great in this....The Hound from GoT as the father is good too.
ben mendelsohn plays a great scumbag, which is why you should review Netflix's Bloodline
speaking of netflix, did u guys give up on house of cards?
Watching this video in 2018 and Matt has really lost a TON of weight.
mgeek1 he got aids
Movie is set in 1860 not the 19th century.
1860 is apart of the 19th century you know, since the 1900s are actually 20th century, since this century is the 21st century
Dũng Nguyễn Văn didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up my man.
I didn't really like this movie. I thought it was directed, shot, and acted very well. But I found it really boring and uninteresting.
