My feeding bucket looks the same too. They are starving this year. Last year late of July-August was bad but this year started earlier. They go through 20lb a day. I feed 1:1 right now. I started with the top feeders and i had robbing problems. Since I start feeding with the community bucket the robbing stopped. I never had any decease in the hives. I start feeding them this way last year and works great. I only place it about 50 feet away from the hives but there are no problems with robbing that way.
How are the bucket feeders made? Thank you
I'm confused. You said you made 5 gallons of sugar water and used a 12# sack of sugar for 1:1. To make 5 gallons of sugar water in a 1:1 mixture should have taken around 25# of sugar. You also said you thought it would be heavy on the sugar like a 1.5 or 2:1 ratio. I appear to me this was very watery with only 12# so did I miss something.
Water weighs 8 lbs per gallon. So 5 gallons should weigh 40 lbs. Therefore, half (1:1) would be 20lbs of sugar and the rest water.
@@michaelshelnutt3534 Yes but if you take 20# of water and mix in 20# of sugar you wont end up with 5 gallons of sugar water mix (try it). It will yield only 4 gallons of sugar water (albeit it will be a 1:1 mix). So to get 5 gallons of a 1:1 mix you need 25# of sugar and when you add the 25# of water you will yield a net 5 gallons of 1:1 sugar water mix.
It was actually a 25# bag. Sorry for the confusion.
@@davidhaught84 Well at least you know we are listening and paying attention and that we hang on your every word 😀
@@jhulin9018 That is exactly right. I always mix 25# sacks and it's 5 gallons of 1:1 syrup. I use a shop scale to weigh both, so I'm dead on every time.
So you feed them all winter and half the summer? It’s amazing that wild bees can make it. I enjoy your videos. Wasn’t expecting you to be a big weightlifter 😊
Great video, thank for sharing your experience !
Am interested in open feeding, it honestly seems more natural to me then feeding at the hive. But not sure I can afford to feed the "whole neighborhood." I know there is a bee yard with probably 30+ hive I'd figure with in about 1/2 a mile of me as the bee fly's. Would I be feeding my bees or just all theirs, thinking that could get costly? Wouldn't/does open feeding make it easier to put feed directly on the littlens with less chance of the strong hives robbing them out? Did you just drill holes in the side of the bucket or is it in the underside of the lip? I was looking at some of the new style chicken feeders and waterers they look like they make good bee feeders? Wait a flower petal is open feeding lol. Do those new style chicken water jugs work well for bee feeders? Nice pond, does it have fish? 🙂
Those Foreign bees would still come to your yard to feed on your Sugar Water .
Them smell the honey in your Hives and possibly plan a Heist from the weakest link in your yard .
Like he has been saying in this whole vid .
Unless you get an enclosed Center feed super .
Saw one of those last week .
THANK YOU. I open feed and everyone seems to hate it and says I’m going to have problems. I’ve never had an issue though.
Its because they have no idea what they are talking about.
My first year in NWF and I was open feeding Jul thru late Oct and it wasn't till I took honey (Late first year so no comb) mid Oct but when it was capped in abundance I took 2/3 of capped left all wet stuff and put 1 wet frame ( spun out) in 1 box. Next day it was robbed out and it was on. I pulled all feeders ( the feeders were from 1 to 50 ft of hives around the yard) when all said and done I lost 3 hives 2 robbed 1 was weather a few weeks later I didn't pull the excluders so hard lessons learned
i use a heavy duty tote to open feed. i turned it into a pollen feeder as well.
I am convinced that open feeding allowed me to get 4/4 colonies through winter.
That is what my feeding bucket looks like
I'm lucky in that near to me are two garden centres, you can tell when they have restocked as the bees come back with lots of pretty pollen 🤧
Thanks David. Always such knowledgeable information. I'll pass it along.
I have a bunch of 2 frame nuc’s, I put a water bucket next to the hives and those hives get the sugar. By the time it’s popular,it’s gone. Those bee’s leave fairly quick. I have a strong bee yard across the street. My bee’s are tough I guess lol
When you use verticle window screen tunnels, there is no robbing of even the weakedt colony, even with an entrance feeder. There's a video on my channel of it in action. Seeing is believing. 😃

Love you say it how it is. Mad respect. Everybody does what works for them for the same bottom line. Keeping your bees safe.
Beautiful feeding video Sir, ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much!
Hi David from NE WI.Were about 2wks behind to as what happens.I've noticed in the past that when the yellow jackets show up around the hive it's time to open feed.I feed 1:1 at the start then switch to 2:1.Thanks of the video.Stay cool
Your place looks beautiful Jeff
They're chowing down on my hummingbird feeder. Pissing the birds off. Lol
FIGHT!
The chicken dinner remark was great !
As usual, great info once again. Thanks.
Phew..I was going to use top feeders.I will try this.Thank you for some great info!
How do you make the bucket? I have several and would like to build one
It makes sense about the feeding Dave. Have you found it works closer to the hives. I wouldn't have that distance, open feeding if it was honey that had the AFB bacteria in it or UFB that's different. Good points Dave.
Close to the hives can cause robbing. Try to keep at least 300 feet away.
@@davidhaught84 if i can i sure will.
I am open feeding this year and my hives are rocking through this dearth so far! Lots of stores, larva of all stages, I think my queens believe there's still a flow
Are you open feeding pollen as well?
@@dijonwhitmore171 Not yet as they have plenty of pollen stored. But, I might start soon. I'm just keeping an eye on how much they have stored up
It would've been nice to know this 3 weeks ago!
Still time to do it. Either for Colony boosting Bee Build Up... or maybe your next Dearth. 👍
I need a bucket how does this work or can you buy one? I have a system but I like the bucket also.
I've been doing this David for right at 10 years after watching one of your videos. Like you said they have to Community Feed somewhere
What do you think about adding honey=B-healthy or their sister product amino-B booster to the sugar water mixture?
Love your videos 🙂👍
Do you have a ratio of buckets to colonies? Just curious I used your method last summer and fall, but with splitting and swarms I now have larger apiary
Love your videos and advice. Thanks Dennis from Sanford NC
Do you open feed when you have supers on? We are taking honey off the first of September.
Always I wanted to open feed but I'm not the only one with bees in my area. Besides, there is a shortage of sugar in my country.
Concerning the spread of disease by open feeding, I think weak and sick hives are most prone to get robbed and therefore healthy hives get infected. Open feed create a good distraction for strong healthy hive.
I agree.
The usage of feed in my area jumps 10 times when I open feed. I realize it's from feeding every feral colony within 2 mile radius.
how do you keep the bucket from leaking? the lids always leak on me.
I see you open feed pollen too. Do you feel they will take pollen substitute during the summer dearth since bees seem picky about pollen substitute in general?
Not really. They don't show much interest till winter.
Question...
Can I take a queen out from a strong Hive and put her in a weak Hive and allow the strong Hive to remake a queen..?
Yes... However, you need to do some prep before hand... !
See that the Weak Hive has available Comb Space for future Laying (empty Brood Comb not Stored Honey on Mass).
That you CAGE that moved Queen, (with maybe x6 Nurse (New) Bees from Her Own Colony.) Attend to her.
Keep her CAGED ! ....
In the New (Weak Hive...) for about x4 or x5 Days.
Then you can open the Tab : and Block it with some Soft Fondant !!!
Bees : Can slowly eat their way Out, or their way In : In Harmony. Thereby "all Queen Phremones are passed" from Bee to Bee (aka they won't want to Ball (Suffocate and Kill that 'Strange Queen !?!'.) 😖
Does this Make Sense ?
Raising your Own QUEEN
The Stronger Hive should HAVE Eggs, Larva, and plenty of Capped Brood, Nectar, and Honey.... as it takes x3 to x4 Weeks for a Queen to be raised (x16 Days to be Born.) Be a Virgin in the Hive that needs to find her Way : be nurtured, feed, go on a Maiden Mating Flight (Say another x5 Days) and to Return, get started in Laying Eggs, to a good degree, for these to hatch as Nurse Bees (that's x21 Days for Workers to be Born.)
The Weak Colony will be "losing Bees" each Day, through Die Off (old age, none return, maybe poor Weather : less food coming in etc...)
So you can see a Weak Colony could get much weaker, before that Queen starts churning out New Baby Bees ! 👀
I would maybe also suggest this :
Swap the position of the Weak Hive, to that of the where the Strong one was (!)
All the Foragers will return to the "Postion" of said Ex Strong Hive : Boostering the Weak one !!! Win, win.🏆
Let that Strong Hive raise their own NEW Queen : The Bees need to feel Hopelessly Queenless, for a few Days. HAVE Eggs, Larva, enough remaining Bees to Support the Colony. AND Drones Available !!!
Without Drones in your Area, you won't get that own Raised QUEEN Mated ! (No Drones means buying a Mated Queen in from a Breeder often they Bank them, and Sell them on in later weeks, when Drone availability drops off (!) *You don't say where you are based... Here in Scotland late August is when Queen Breeding Time finishes. We may have Drones as late as late September, but they are not good Breeder stock... Result in having a Queen who won't last the Winter, as she could fail Laying good quality Brood, become a Drone Laying Colony only !?! (Doomed come Spring! As the Population isn't made.) .... Just saying. 🤔
Hope this works for you. 😎

Sir they are roaming and Quenelle each another??
David, I assume you have taken off your honey before this feeding right?
How is this feeder made? Thanks
Hello Dave. I am a new bee keeper. I bought a nuke from you in June and July this year. They are really coming along very well. I have watched a great number of your videos and they are super informative and I love watching them. I have a question please. it is late August and I have been open feeding for a couple of weeks now. The feeders are 1000 feet away but when they run low my two hives are under attack from robbers. I am now keeping the feeders full but the problem continues. The robbing bees seem to show up at the end of each day. I bought beesmart screens and install them. it worked for awhile. My question is after time do the robbers figure out the screens? It seems like to me they might have. I made a couple of home made screens with the entrance in a different location and my colonies have figured them out. will the robbers do the same in time? I did a inspection a few days ago and all still looks good. I saw eggs and brood and lots of resources. Last question. I have two 10 frame hives with robbing screens installed. all 10 frames are full. Will that size colony be able to protect its self with the help I have provided?
Do you have anything on beehive entrance ?
Don't understand how he said that bucket is a 1.5:1 when he said he used a 12 lb sack?!? 5 gal bucket is 50lbs? So mixing 1:1 as said in video and comments is 25 lbs of sugar and the rest water correct?? Also, how do you make this bucket?
To make the bucket get a five gallon bucket with a lid and then you use a drill with a very small bit and drill a hole in every other pocket on the bucket There's a few videos on how to make them. Alsonif you make one be sure to put sticks or twigs innthe pockets so the bees can use them as ladders if they fall or get pushed in it keeps them from drowning that way and also be sure to set your bucket on level ground so it will equalize faster after you place it and you won't loose as much sugar syrup that way you always loose a little bit it seems.
It was a 25 pound sack. I had one of those brain fog moments lol
How do you make that feeder ?
Exactly what I want to know
Buy the Dish with Lid from a Bee Supply Business. Make an Eke (the Box that raises to Hive Roof off those Frames, allowing that Dish to be within the Hive.) Make your own, using x4 Sides of Cut Wood to be the same length and width as the Hive Walls, and fits inside that Roof.
(Use scrape Timber, some Nails or Screws and some Wood Glue...
And Paint if Need !)
Simples. 😎
@@ME_MeAndMyBees Is that even English? Absolutely no help whatsoever.
Obviously, start with a 5 gal bucket with lid. It is sitting on an old nuc. How and where are the holes drilled to keep all the sugar water from just running out?
All Bee Bucket Feeders hold Liquid (1:1 as example) by Gravity !
Fill the Bucket, with a Tight fitting Lid !!! (Even Jam Jars, with a few nail 'holes' made in the Lid.
In Nucs its the same principle (!)
At Hive side 'turn' Bucket etc, Upside Down.... Quickly !!! It will drip, then gravity pressure takes over... Bees will drink from the Holes/ Mesh Screen (if that type) Until Feeder it empty ! As plain as English ! 👍
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Happy Beekeeping 2022.
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Example: 👀
I had a Jar Feeder. A commercial Mesh Lid Type. (NOT a DIY nail Hole in Lid creation...)
Anyway, the darn thing would pour 2/3rds of its content out on 'inverting it !?! Then one Day, was in a Hurry... Filled that wretched commercial thing... within the Bucket of 1:1 and Turned it upside down UNDER the 1:1 Liquid (!) Bam !!! It WORKED and stayed In !
Try that too... Simples. 😎
Ps. My above Comment related to Hive Top Feeder : Buckets/Jars.
These you Invert !
Hive Feeder are Dish Bowls with Lids and an Inner Column with a Hole, the Bees come up thru. These you DO NOT invert ! Or your in a Sticky 1:1 mess. 🤣
Ps. Your Hive will Need an 4" Wooden Eck Rim, (Shallow Feeder) or a Spare Hive Box (Bucket Feeder etc) to be placed so said Feeder are placed above an Inner Crown Board (with central Hole, or pair of Parallel Holes.)
Even a Sheet of Plastic, or Canvas, with a Flap Hole Cut into it works.
So Bees come up to "Feed from Feeder Hole(s) only", but DONT have access to this empty Cavity covering the Feeder, and Roof above !?! NO Random Comb gets made ! ... 👀
So my 3 large colonesand 3 5frame nucs and 3 2 frame mating nuc and they go through 5 gal in 2 days. How often should I fill it up? I’ve been filling it up 1 a week or so should I do more or less?
Keep it full through the dearth if possible. But if hives start getting honey bound then slow up some.
It is advisable to feed bees frames from die outs at this time?
Yes, but at least 300 feet away.
I would recommend looking into the beefed up geoengineering going on. Far too much activity chem trailing in the skies, no good for organic life, that it includes 'us'. Barely mid summer has gone by, I am surprised but not shocked.
