that Shin Godzilla poster with just "God help us" written on a plain red background might actually be simultaneously the rawest and most chilling poster I've ever seen what
I never realized how much movie posters overlap with thumbnails. It makes sense though since they basically have the same goal of "watch this thing I made."
UA-cam thumbnails pretty much have the following things: Fire in the background, text covering eyes, BANNED, CANCELLED, and the Rotten Tomatoes or whatever socre. That all I can think of.
The worst movie posters are the ones that give away the plot! Remember that Planet of the Apes VHS cover that showed Lady Liberty in ruins, which wasn't revealed until THE END OF THE FILM and ruins the mystique that we as the audience were supposed to unravel!!
1:29 Nah, Diamondbolt. None of us clicked on Schaffrillas's Megamind video because of the thumbnail. We clicked on it to witness the true power of the dEhYdRaTiOn GuN!!!!!
1:20 THANK YOU. Every single video essay with a greyed out screenshot of the character with text covering their eyes with some buzzword like "guilt" or "pacifist" or "liar" can f right off. They're bloody everywhere!
I seriously freaking hate those types of thumbnails. Why do they need to block the eyes? What is wrong with the eyes? Put the text seperated from the eyes!
I can't get over the shaggy dog poster , why tf did they decide to put human eyes on the dog. Those are the kind of stuff you see in your sleep paralysis.
"Be careful what you wish for" was the poster tagline for Wish, a movie that had nothing to do with being careful what you wish for. And I was one of the few who liked Wish.
Can't believe a major company got godzilla and a bunch of dinosaurs in a boarding room and had them sign contracts. That meeting must have been a bloody mess
All that because he made a bad video on Godzilla, while pretty much missing the whole point of what makes Godzilla iconic. Honestly, if he never likes the franchise, why bother to make a rant and tell his audience to do the research? He had it coming.
I've always had a strange fondness for the "stacking" movie posters. There's just smth neat about seeing all the celebrity action heroes doing the cool poses and being highlighted. Idk, it's a weird thing to be fond of lol
My favorite is the Pacific Rim poster with Gypsy Danger, the title at the bottom, and "to fight monsters we made monsters of our own" front and center.
The first shin Godzilla poster is probably one of the best poster I have ever seen still to this day. And the one missed call poster gives me nightmares.

3:36 Funny you bring up Spider-Man: Homecoming because the “main” poster for that one that I always see is the one where Spider-Man is just chilling in his academic decathon jacket. It’s SUCH a great poster, as it perfectly represents the vibes of this iteration of Peter Parker and how even when he’s Spider-Man, he’s just a kid who likes to relax.
I have a book containing all the James Bond movie posters. It is so interesting to see the evolution of the 60's and 70's paintings and the amount of work and detail that went into them. Look at the main poster for Moonraker as a prime example. Then, once the 80s closed they started to just compile shots from the movie onto the Poster. Such as with Goldeneye but they were still very creative, one poster for Die Another Day was a smoking barrel of a gun laying on a CG block of ice slowly melting and the amount of detail that went into that is awesome. The best modern day Bond poster has got to be the SPECTRE Bullet Shatter against the black back round. I love them so much I bought a Dr No poster and Octopussy one sheet to hang in my bedroom.
I always wondered why the Alvin and the Chipmunks posters look wildly different from the movie. And I don't mean the clothes, I mean their literal designs, their faces and body proportions look way off from how they do in the film. And after some digging, I found out that these models that were used in the posters were actually used in the original trailers for the first movie, I can tell by the shapes of their heads and hair patterns that they're the same as in the posters. But I guess somewhere in the middle of production they were changed a bit to look like how they do now. And for years it always bugged me why their poster models look so different, I don't even care about the clothes that they never wear in the movie, I just want to know why they changed their designs?
I am excited for Fall Guy from the poster. I love the poster of the lady in the car with Ryan Gosling on a camera crane swinging around reaching his hand out for her and an explosion behind him. The visual alone makes me wanna see it
Hi there! Thank your you sponsoring the game ( I watched your videos from the past on transformers and stuff I kinda miss those but here I am watching this video and others. I’m so glad for you )
The only poster of a modern movie I have in my room rn is Spider Man Into and Across the spider verse (though for what it’s worth I love the EEAAO poster) The rest are all from movies before 2010
Thank you for pointing out there were always terrible movie posters. People always wonder where the best literature went and don't stop and realize a lot of the stuff we remember is .001% of all novels from that time and over half of it was only popular decades after the author died.
8:40 Anytime I see this poster I can’t help but think about that one story of that guy who ripped one of his molars out in order to stop watching this film.
honestly i still can't get over how the poster for the slenderman movie is literally so cool and disturbing while being tied to such a bad and hilarious movie
8:55 idk why but I always thought in the Halloween poster, that the pumpkin was apart of the knife and the whole thing was just a giant glove claw thing like Freddie’s
I know the weirdest Movie Posters always want to make Marketing... But, some of them uses the same Elements from other movies to make it look "Badass" or "action" Like with Star Wars posters with it's Famous "Blue on the Left, Red on the Right" Poster for it's Good vs Evil Or Main character in the Middle to be Good or Evil. Or Avengers with the Main characters in the Middle, Villain on the Top, Characters on the Bottom and Title above the Bottom. Also with the Wimpy kid where It has the Cast and behind them is a Shadow of their Book self. Or Doom 2005's Early Poster where The Main character's Hand or weapon at the Bottom showing that they are in First Person. Or, Just the 80's Poster where the Logo is just there like Jurassic Park or Ghostbusters with the Logo on the Middle and Characters on the Bottom. They call Movie posters "Original" But some are just using the Same elements from other Posters just for Marketing and Money. But, They needed a Poster for their Movie.

I feel the Spiderman Homecoming floating heads poster only worked when it was that one version where they were separated via a spider web. It doesn't exactly look amazing either, but it gave a better visual of each character being in their own scenario, cut off by the web line like a comic panel if that makes sense.
8:08 This poster actually makes a lot more sense when you realize it's supposed to be about 60 feet. One of my local theaters had it on display, and he still looked small.
One of my favorite posters is the Killers of the Flower Moon poster that was made by Addie Roanhorse, it's a real shame it's so hard to even find! They hardly marketed with it at all, but it's beautiful
One of my favourite horror movie posters (even if the quality of the movie is questionable) is the teaser poster for alien covenant. Where it’s completely black, with the face of the xenomorph looming out of the darkness, the only text being “run.”
I think the original Star Wars from the late 70’s started this whole get everyone’s face on the poster thing. But you do get poster trends. If you’re a big Horror fan you will absolutely remember the Late 90’s and Early 00’s Scream knockoff movies and posters with the cast on the posters in a line.
In my opinion, a good way to make a movie poster is to make it look like a scene from the movie. Like instead of floating heads, it’s people posing standing or sitting together. An example is the Avengers 1 poster where it’s a destroyed city and the avengers are posing, it looks like a scene from the movie.
deafinately agree, there have always been bad movie posters throughout the years of cinema, its just people's nostalgia taking over and also the internet allowing us to see these bad posters so often
I think the best movie posters are those that tell you what it's about and nothing else. Actors can be on them, but let the design for itself. I love the Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween posters especially. The movies vary in quality, of course, but they have great posters.
Floating head posters can work if they convey character, relationships, tone and style. The large cast is to show that, well, there is a large cast, that it's a big movie with a lot of characters.
It’s unfortunate he didn’t actually give individual examples of weird movie posters, because there’s an hour long video to be made about polish and ghanian movie posters
