    it's ironic that people are remarking more on the fact that she is dumpster diving rather than the fact that so much fresh and edible food is thrown out, while so many people go hungry every day.

    • @kevinp665
      @kevinp665 6 років тому +14

      Kaya fresh and edible based on perception, sense of smell etc can be extremely misleading. The FDA doesn’t do an eye and sniff test when they grade food or allow it into the human consumption stream for a reason. She might get lucky most of the time but some things are thrown out due to Salmonella or contamination and one day she’ll regret the lifestyle with a ridiculous medical bill. This is why people in society frown upon dumpster diving, it really isn’t healthy for you believe it or not.

But the middle exist, have a part time job where you can build your experience and have free time to climb, plus if she is 18 it does not mean she will live forever like that! maybe a year, 2 or 3 and get bored or have enough of fun and look for a job.. my advice to do it after uni.

    I used to work at Starbucks. They threw away perfectly good packaged food every night on the closing shifts. We were told to throw the food away 3 days before the expiration date so some of us would take the food home ourselves instead of throwing it away. After all it tastes really good and it's healthy too. She's very resourceful to do that in my opinion.

  • @MarkusRock777

    When I lived in Japan teaching English, the laws on expiration dates were strict. 7eleven for example would throw away fresh food in the back, stacked perfect for the homeless. Even the beer bottles had a little beer left in them, put neatly in plastic crates for the homeless and they were given no hassles from the police or owners. The homeless in Japan might live in a box, but it is ALWAYS clean and well kept. Some people can't deal with others in the working world. Many wonderful people who are homeless in Japan.

      starbucks is destroying the world. I pick up trash in my spare time and non-biodegradable plastic starbucks cups and green straws are the majority of the garbage on the streets and in parks. A constant line of cars, with engines left running, at their drive-thru...it's an environmental disaster. This was even happening after the economy crashed in 2008. People were crying they were poor...yet, there they were, still lined up at the fucking drive-thru to pay 10+ bucks for a stupid coffee drink. Idiots.

    When I was a grad student in Austin, I would often study at Sbux until they closed at night (I needed to use their internet, and I only bought a single coffee because I was so poor). Every night, the employees would get rid of the food that they couldn't keep for the next day, and they would give it to whoever wanted it. I was often the only person in there at that late hour, and I very much appreciated their gifts. Austin people are cool like that. Good times.

      My brother was skinny, was eating crap from anywhere and was at the gym most of the time. Eventually he got sick and died simply because his body could not take longer of the exercising and extreme lifestyle. He was healthy until his body told him enough, and he was barely 40.
      One thing is to have a lifestyle for a while; but on the long run, you can't escape to the truth that the human body is made to be sustained in a certain way, with certain food and can be pushed only so far. Some may end up making it, but the majority won't.

      Yeah, is not that simple...this kind of live (with all the pros and cons) is only available in certain countrys (USA is one of a few) in wich the economic "wellness" of certain "zones" allow, the abundance you need to find "perfect" food in a dumpster, kinda living on Disney there...go more closer to the Mexican border and try to live like this...people are doing horrible jobs there just for survive!, they are not "greedy"...being greedy is for lucky people.
      So the point is: in order to live like this YOU NEED that most people work her fucking ass day to day, to generate abundance, is like...hitch-hiking: if there wasn't a guy working his ass off to keep his truck running...then you go nowhere.

    I love that you feature so many solo traveling women (and WOC!). Just a note on the dumpster driving as someone who's done it: be *very* careful. Yes, a LOT of businesses throw out perfectly good food regularly (Starbucks, Le Pain Quotidien, and other bakeries/cafés are notorious for this since they only sell foods prepared that morning). However, I've had friends who are pro dumpster divers fall extremely ill because they ate something they got dumpster diving that should have remained trash. I would stay away from dairy, meats, and eggs while diving. Stay safe!

    • @Ranaemoves
      @Ranaemoves 7 років тому +9

      Don't worry, I'm very safe when I choose to eat animal products or things that are no longer cold to the touch or otherwise have unknown/mystery thrown-out dates. It's a bummer your friends got sick, but it seems we're also getting more and more recalls of popular brands in stores or at restaurants/fast food chains for salmonella, e coli, etc. Just goes to show food isn't necessarily safe anywhere you get it. The nice thing about the dumpster diving is you know from the start that nobody is looking out for you, and your own health is completely in your hands. I make light of this in the video in order to encourage others to dive and demonstrate how accessible it can be, as well as showcase our exorbitant waste as a nation/world. But I totally agree: there are dangers, and you need to be aware and use common sense when diving.

      Hey, is there a time of day that is better? morning or end of day?

    • @Ranaemoves
      @Ranaemoves 7 років тому +6

      totally depends on the dumpster--some are more hidden, some stores throw out most stuff in the morning during restocking... If it's inconspicuous to dive during the day, or you don't care about getting caught (though consider not, since it might ruin how "diveable" it is in future), then go for it. But usually night/after close is easier, and there's generally more stuff to find.

      "I'm very safe" .... well, you think you are. I almost died due to food poisoning (listeriosis) and I am still recovering a full two years later. Food poisoning is an absolute real thing and can have very lasting consequences. It can also ravage the hell out of your body and kill you. I respect your lifestyle choices and I agree that there is a ton of needless waste in our society and you have found a way to take advantage of, but as someone who went through actual trauma due to contaminated food, your seeming invincible attitude comes off as naive at best and foolhardy at worst. There are times when it pays to be on the cautious side of things. Little bugs deserve our respect. You can not always sense or smell or taste bad food. Good luck and be well from a fellow lady climber/adventurer.

    On Dumpster diving, this is my opinion. I used to be in the food industry, I dropped out of Culinary school, most of the "food rules" we have are extremely conservative which makes sense for liability reasons. I've found over the past couple years that in my experience as long as my body doesn't reject the food it's most likely safe to eat. I assume it's the same thing as listening to my intuition and that in the beginning it's hard to tell what your reaction to the food is, but the more aware I've become of how I am, the more reliable my judgement is. Would love to hear your opinion
    Edit: I couldn't figure out how to fit it into the edit but Ranae lives on 70-100% Dumpster food depending on what city she is in. She never sacrifices health for free food. If she isn't finding Veggies she will purchase them.

Does a skinny girl like that REALLY need to dumpster dive? She could buy a bag of rice or some pasta and buy cheap produce and farmers markets or directly off farmers she passes by. A person can be classed as successful if they wake up everyday and truly do what they want, I know copious amounts of people that are money rich in a job they detest and time poor wishing for a tiny amount of freedom, all that will happen is they have the biggest headstone in the cemetery... If you can make a life like this work, then go for it.

    I noticed lots of comments about my diving. I've written a pretty extensive article about it here, if you want to check it out: www.femmefringe.com/dumpster-talk/
    For all of you who think I'm a nasty woman, let me clarify: hell YES I am!
    But just because I myself choose to eat and moan about "tampered with" (half-eaten) goods from various dumpsters (and bus-bins at restaurants), does not qualify dumpster-diving on the whole as "gross". If you think dumpster diving necessitates eating spoiled, touched, chewed on or in any way "bad" food, you are simply ignorant about how much perfectly good, edible, still-packaged food is wasted because of CAPITALISM. Before you get all pukey in your mouth, do a little research, eh?
    But I personally have very, very low standards. And I'm healthier and stronger than ever. hm... weird... what is it all mean? It means I'm going to keep doing it, haterz.

    I'm probably alot older then most on here. And I don't dumpster dive because I live way out in the country for now.
    But many who think it's yuck, or trashy or such, may someday find themselves very hungry in today's greedy world, and wasteful disposable society.
    Then, there are those, that WILL, survive and that do, care about our world.

Good food that is going to the people instead of into the garbage dump. Of course we still need cash donations to pay the few paid employees and for gas and truck and other equipment. It pleases me to be involved in a large organization that makes sure people are cared for and treated with respect. We all deserve that.

    Every food comes from dirt. Our consumeristic attitude has made us discard food suitable for human consumption as we find "flaws" in it. Something that is interesting is that all that food is packaged in plastic and in the dumpster, so if someone like Ranae were to not eat it it wouldn't even decompose properly because it's sealed in plastic. Even if the food that she takes doesn't get eaten it atleast gets put into the compost and the plastic recycled. To me it seems like only a positive thing, Free food, less garbage.

    Wow, I am shocked to read those comments from you americans! How can most of you find it disgusting to eat food which is perfectly fine (mostly thrown away because of an extremly short best before-law, so the food is ggod but stores HAVE to throw it away) which would otherwise be wasted? In Germany it's quite a big movement and a great way of making a statement against food-waste. This has nothing to to with not being ABLE to pay for food!

    • @mommahil4323
      @mommahil4323 7 років тому +9

      sickerOr I was shocked at the responses too - in the uk the problem is being addressed by major supermarkets allowing this stuff to be used in community kitchens and to teach people how to make the best out of what's available. Even more amazing is the fact that the aside of dumpster diving seems to have completely overtaken the main subject! Thanks for some good ideas and a beautifully presented video.

    • @NjniaVanDerWald
      @NjniaVanDerWald 7 років тому +1

      actually in germany it has become quite a problem that supermarkets started to "hide" the rotten garbadge between the edible stuff to save on garbadge fees. and the community kitchens aren't allowed to be picky about the donated stuff, so in the end they themself had to spend the garbadgefee, which at some places lead to them paying more for the stuff than they would if they bought it.
      Luckily at least in my vicinity they had adressed the problem and most supermarkets followed.

    I lived in my VW bug seasonally in Camp 4 in Yosemite in the 70’s, from about ‘72 to ‘80. I never resorted to dumpster diving but we used to scarf un-eaten food off people’s tables when they’d get up and leave. In 1980 I got a truck with a cabover camper and lived my vagabond life for a few more years before getting a real job and settling into a semi-normal life. Those were halcyon days.

    I personally have not gone the "dumpster diving" way because I have three lovely grand daughters to be concerned for. So first and foremost is their safety...But with that said, I worked for years at a homeless shelter for years and we got a lot of "donations" that would have ended up in a dumpster had I not intervened and asked for the "donations" before they were tossed...the guys in the shelter always ate good and healthy and those "donations" were absolutely priceless additions that supplemented the very small budget we were given to feed them. Kudo's to her for living her life on her own terms and not the way society dictates.

    I'm aware of the mindset behind dumpster diving, but I don't get why so many rock climbers are doing it. I am a rock climber myself, but I don't take my food out of dumpsters and I probably never will. Think about where your insanely expensive climbing equipment comes from. I know that for example Arc'teryx is manufacturing their equipment in Canada, but even they buy their materials from 3rd world countries, kinda supporting the troubles in such places. It get's even worse with companies such as Petzl and Black Diamond. Don't get me wrong, I own products of all of the named companies, but I am fully aware that rock climbing isn't as "green" as everyone thinks it is. Just growing long hair and living in a van doesn't make you eco-friendly. So dumpster diving for food is (in my opinion) just a thing because people feel guilty for owning such expensive and in most cases far from eco-friendly gear. I wouldn't be surprised if most of such dumpster-diver-climbers own a down jacket for example. (kind of a hypocrisy) We have a big dumpster-dive-movement in Switzerland, but what I really hate is that most of those "ecos" leave dumpsters and trashcans behind like a pack of dogs or foxes would. Trash everywhere, that's why most reataurants and companies over here need to lock their dumpsters. It's sad that we have to protect our trash better than our goods. (I work in the food industry as well) I'm not against it...but please at least clean up your mess. And don't shove it down my throat If you are a rock climber...You might do something good to the environment with your minimalistic lifestyle, but you make up for it with the next rope you buy...think about it.

    I found a condom in the dumpster. I was in good condition. I've used it several times.

    Hi Dylan. First I must to say you're very positive and inspirational human.
    Secondly I really appreciate it that you show someone like this woman, because she's full of amazing energy and healthy distance to herself. I would like to have lifestyle like she.

    Why waste it! If we could give all our good " throw away food" to homeless people before we binned it. People wouldnt be hungry. And we would look like heros helping those who needed it. But People with narrow minds think its disgusting. The reality is throw away better food than most countries get to ever see. Just cause its in a bag sealed doesnt mean its bad. Jesus wake up people and remember how lucky we are!

    There is a lot to digest in this clip. First, I love my Honda, and it definitely made me think about upgrading from my old CRV to an Element for travel purposes. I also appreciate her resourcefulness in "upcycling" tossed food. At first I thought it was to save money, but I see a lot of expensive equipment (carbon fiber roof box, for example). I guess eating for free = more money in her pocket for equipment! Ranae certainly inspires me to get out on road trips more often!

      You're describing the majority of America in one shape, way, form or other... We all know someone that is behind on rent, bills, etc but won't let that get in the way of their morning Starbucks, pack of cigarettes, Red Bull or an 1/8th of flower.... Because she chooses to prioritize differently means we look down on her? I think not.

      what's sad is that our food system has normalized and incentivized the "disposal" of over 50% of the food that is produced while there are millions of hungry people world wide.

    I worked at a produce and fresh goods market for awhile. You'll be surprised at what we threw away and how much we threw away. If the date said "best buy", "use by" we threw it away. I hated it on one level because it was such a waist, but on the other side I loved it because I always took whatever we threw away. I totally understand this girl. Its essentially the same thing only I got to it before the dumpster...Good for you, girl.
