- This is a quick interview with Alan Wilder, done by Daniel Barassi (Depeche Mode webmaster), after the aftershow party at the O2 show of Depeche Mode.
The live footage on the left is Mr Wilder and Mr Gore performing Somebody at the Royal Albert Hall, a few days earlier.

I wonder if this dignified and humble gentleman is able to comprehend just what he means to the fans. You and your creative talent have been so dearly missed and you will always matter, Mr Alan Wilder.
Absolutely
My 80's and 90's soundtrack has a name: Alan Wilder
Alan is so loved. He was just as integral to Depeche Mode as Martin and Dave.
If I had 3 wishes 1) Heath 2) Financial Freedom and 3) Alan Wilder Back with DM to hear how they would sound now, gives me chills! Reunion Tour and then I could Die! It's not a crime to dream.
❤️💛❤️💛
Exactly 👍👍👍👍👍
Alan's voice still just makes me melt inside ;)
When Alan joined the band, their sound changed from bein' ultra-poppy to havin' a deeper, darker, edgier sound. All's I got ta say is, GOD BLESS YOU ALAN WILDER! Your musical contributions are underrated and will never be forgotten... at least not by this gal!
I agree. Alan WAS the sound of DM after he joined them. Since he quit after Violator their sound lost that 'edge' & went all 'electronic rock' which I never really liked. That's why I heard he quit.
He wanted DM to stay purely electronic but because of the success of Music For The Masses in the USA with its 'guest guitars' in some of the tracks, it was inevitable that the pull of the States would dictate the direction they went in AND have more or less stayed in.
If Alan came back, I pretty much think DM would go back to that electronic sound again (much to Martin's disapproval lol 🤣)
Once Clark left so did the pop
@@AngelArtists They were electronic-rock before in my opinion-when it was electronic music with a rock edge. What they became afterwards, I'm not really sure-some version of alternative rock. They had some good tracks afterwards but I'll be waiting for the day Wilder joins back. Wilder's music is missing something and Depeche Mode's music is missing something
I didn't like DM before Alan
The mind behind the best Depeche songs: Alan Wilder's touch and knowledge
Alan Wilder is the master of diplomacy. ;)
yes, always keeping the peace.
every DM fan wants Alan back cause as brilliant as Martin's songs are, Alan gave them a life a song and a depth. The depth of a Martin/Alan song was amazing. What struck me about Violator is the depth and fullness of the album. Alan is a genius and hsi musical ability is up there with any one you can name. His Recoil work is just brilliant and I wish more if it was produced thou.
Oh jeez, talk about goosebumps and tears. Just hearing him talk about the experience and watching Depeche Mode as a 'fan' sounded so ironically sad and bitter sweet. He seemed to be genuinely overwhelmed by he reception he got. It sure is a great feeling to feel loved and admire. Well Alan, you can have lots more of that feeling if you came back. Please please please Dave, Martin and Fletch, please extend a hand out to Alan and ask him back.
On "Spirit" acouncment conferention Dave when asked about reunion with Alan said" We have Gordeno now"...
@@ash23neuro mr giant head peter gordino
@@ash23neuro Gordeno isn't even really "part" of DM, Dave...
@ash23neuro OMG 😢 thats so sad to know that David said this… I have seen Depeche Mode a month ago on Memento Mori Tour 2024 and I couldnt express my feelings about this collaboration exactly: Peter and Christian are great and they do nothing wrong, but I hate them for taking Alans place. Now DM doesnt think they need Alan. Lets be honest: David and Martin dont need to make new music anymore, the DM is a label already (based on their earlier work with Vince, Andy and mostly Alan) which sells.
Love this man. Always speaks so eloquently. Lovely.
I love this man so much. His works are really missed :(
It makes me so emotional seeing how much older he’s gotten. I have the biggest crush on younger Alan Wilder. He’s so beautiful and talented.
he is human and a special one
He looks great here. He looks MUCH younger than 51. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@AnnetteBond He looks 51.
And now he's 63.
It was Dave that made the first contact with Alan. It always seems like Dave was the person in DM that was closest to Alan.
They never lost contact - at least via text/mail - met a couple of times and yeah. they were the closest. Alan cut ties with Martin and obviously Andy.
That seems exactly the way of it. I think the lingering issues that caused Alan to leave were really from Martin and Fletch-a packaged deal really, as they’ve been best friends since day 1. Martin is a great musician of course, but I think there was tension with him and Alan toward the end, often being unappreciative and flippant about Alan’s efforts. Fletch is barely a musician, so how could he really get it? If I were Alan, classically trained, doing the bulk of the scoring, I’d be beyond frustrated that the likes of Fletch was taking up equal space in my band.
@@katvtay fletch just seems like a massive uppity wanker if you read some of the comments and remarks he made about alan regarding his departure - saying stuff like he was never truly a member of the band, they only 'let' him contribute musically as a privilege, and basically taking his departure overall as some sort of personal attack against him. martin has probably never been the most open, communicative guy, but he at least had the self-awareness to recognise in later years that they never truly gave alan the recognition he deserved... but fletch, man, the guy can barely play, can't fucking dance (just watch those cringeworthy dad moves he does), and yet he was getting equal space and pay as alan?
They were always very close and if you watch devotional Alan almost never takes his eyes off David.
This is true. And, perhaps, Dave really regrets Alan leaving. Their voices are close in timbre. Thanks to Alan's backing vocals, Dave's voice sounded smoother and more flowing. Yes, and he could get an audience, and the text was sung in the same key. Over the years, Martin's voice has become lower, but he still lacks that smoothness.
God bless you Alan no matter where you stand.
Alan is a brilliant musician. Always love to see videos with him. He is a great person. Love him so much...
He is such a class act. I just love him so much!
a real - real gentleman. i love u, alan wilder.
Sadly they’ve never been the same without him. He should have forever been the fourth FULL member of DM. Letting him walk out the door was a HUGE mistake.
it’s not too late to ask him back… is it?
I've been a DM fan since 1986. This is back when hard rock/pop, etc. was the thing at my southern California high school and all the DM fans were looked down on, made fun of by fans of other musical genres. To this day, when I even think of Depeche Mode, I still always think of them as the foursome. Alan's signature is all over their brilliant classic songs, and especially Violator after which they just exploded like a supernova. Still love Alan, and I still love Depeche Mode, one of the few bands from my youth whose music has aged well. To hear Depeche Mode (Violator's singles) played on commercial radio here in LA for the first time (and not just on KROQ), was a surreal moment that I haven't forgotten.
Their music has touched so many hearts and minds XX
Alan Wilder has a beautiful true heart. It would be mindblowing all four back together. A friendship of a lifetime, talent working together as a system matching their abilities. Leave behind whatever reason that parted their ways. You can see it in his eyes. He never truly left. His heart has always been in DM. It melts my heart every time I see the hugs with Martin and Fletch. What a beautiful moment
I love him and he looks fantastic in this video - so handsome!! Come back Alan, come and make some more music 💘💥xxxx
He was the most handsome of Depeche Mode ❤️😔 A handsome talented boy-next-door. Though not so bright-looking as David and Martin. Love him forever ❤️
What a genuinely nice guy!!! Immensely talented. Can't help but like him!
I hope they reunite , Depeche Mode is not the same without him
It's strange because the very first Depeche song I heard that got me into the band was Barrel of a Gun, which Alan didn't help make... Yet like everybody else it seems, after having listened to their entire discography, I feel very ''nostalgic'' of Alan and feel that they don't sound or feel quite right without him..
You stil look good Alan!! Love You!
What a precious, talented, well spoken and sweet man! ✨ What a pity Alan is not working on music industry anymore (at the moment), but as long as he’s happy, mainly with good health and wellness, it’s okay for me. But anyway, I hope he, at least, makes another remix, or he starts a new world tour of Recoil (no matter if he plays the old tracks). 🥺❤
That performance with Martin and Alan had me crying when I saw it 3 years ago. I thought it would be the start of Alan finally coming back to DM at least for 1 more album. Alas it wasn't meant to be. I still hope Alan changes his mind. Dave would welcome him back with open arms and I'm sure Mart and Fletch would be totally fine with it. It hasn't been the same since 1995- Alan is the missing piece of DM, but I will always support the remaining 3 members.
Pure musicianship! he is the missing "ingredient" of DM today and DM wasnt the same band after he left.. i really missed Alan and hoping for his return to DM one day
its never going to happen though best to just accept it im my humble opinion x
+CM Just Wilder era was better, he added his magic touch but he will never come back
Good Job Alan, I miss your classic synth sounds on depeche Mode, thank you for give us your performance on the Concerts and your support for the Band, Good Luck, Alan on your personal jobs.... I just cry to see your hugs with the band after much time !!! and, the last thing, It´s incredibel performance on the concert " The World we live in and live in Hamburg !!!
Alan Wilder IS the reason of their success. His sound and compositions (based on Martin's melodies) were magical. I think most of the "copy bands" try to mimic their 80s sound. Alan Wilder wasn't the member that should have left (hint: Andy).
+nirsul Yeah, what does Andy do anyway? Count the money? Pay the electricity bill?
+Skye ID i heard he is just the coordinator his music abilities are very little.
+Light&Shadow Fletch gets all of that money (the same as Martin and Dave, minus the song publishing royalties) for doing almost nothing (showing up onstage and playing a few very simple parts), so why in the world would he ever leave? I know you said "should" in your opinion, and I agree, but I'm just saying it's not even a realistic consideration. Alan is an artist, so he had his reasons for leaving, but Fletch is more like a Lotto winner. :)
+depecheddurand Fletch hangs around the studio with Martin and gives his opinions, which may or may not carry any weight. He also plays a tiny bit--the simplest parts--onstage and claps a lot. The only reason he is in the band is that he brought Martin into it, which I suspect was the sole reason that Vince--the singular original founder--let him join despite the fact that he has no musical talent. Vince wanted Martin, who was in another band at the time (French Look), and Fletch was a good friend of Martin's--clever man, Vince. ;) Without Fletch, Depeche Mode as we know them would never have existed, so he has their eternal gratitude and gets to stay and share in the rewards.
.... and that's what made him to be the... MOST UNIMPORTANT MEMBER OF A (FAMOUS) POP BAND in the universe
Tears in my eyes. Every single time I watch this video. There is something so deep and emotional. Sadness as well. I will never ever get over the fact Alan
Alan, we miss a lot. Missing your art, lacking your technicality, you miss your beauty on stage. All this is now missing from the Depeche. Sin
You’re one in a million Alan 4 ever thanks 🙏 😀😃
If only Alan would do at least 1 album again with DM. He seemed to be the heart of DM. Genuine guy. Album would be #1 if they did one.
Alan, this is your band...you've always been part of DM...I'd love it if you re-joined but whatever makes you happy man. God bless you and best wishes from Mexico!!!
Qué pedazo de artistazo es mi Alan Wilder. No sólo es un gran músico sino que depuraba las canciones de DM hasta dejarlas perfectas. Ojalá volviera al grupo. Te queremos!!!
0:20-0:27 this was so bittersweet...
being completely honest, i can't unsee Alan as a vital part of DM. it's a *fact* that the most influential records of the band had *a lot* of his work present, it's almost palpable, as Martin's emotional songwriting and Dave's mindblowing voice and performance
the problem is that we, as fans, are unable to be blind or deaf of his hand in some of the most important records of our lives, and we all know it in here. and of course it's of no use for anyone asking him back, it's been so long and i can imagine being nearly impossible to replicate the magic... but it'sso unbelievably unfair and specially sad when _some_ pretend to do like *all of that* was nothing.
Best band ever and Alan Wilder is a great guy - they were at their best with Alan in the group but still an amazing band
Es una tristeza grande ver a un gran artista retirado como Alan Wilder, respetamos su decisión pero nos gustaría volver a verte pronto en el escenario 💓💓💓💓
I miss him so much. It's bad enough him not being in DM; the fact that that he's disappeared from the public eye makes me so sad.
I miss him too. Let’s just hope, that everything is okay with him and he’s happy. 🥺
PURE MAGIC... moment I'll really treasure. 🤩
Alot of people diss their albums since he left, but apart from Exciter being mediocre, they were really good. They sound much better than most people anticipated when Alan left. Despite this, I agree that they would be even more amazing with him in the group. Here's to a potential full reunion!
Come back Alan!
I just can't see this video without getting tears in my eyes. Absolutely fantastic.
DM never fully recovered from the exodus of Alan’s creative genius.
The way it should be coming back to share with his mate. Class act.
Depeche Mode would be Depeche Mode when Alan Wilder returns...Period
A gentleman
We want Alan Back, NOT TO REPLACE ANDY, BUT TO REPLACE ALAN Himself!!!
This makes me SMILE.
DM has produced some amazing albums post-Alan, but it was the late 80s and early 90s where they were simply the greatest. I'm pleased they have reconciled and I'd count myself very lucky to see Alan perform again.
Until then: Alan -- you are a genius and I wish you all the happiness in the world. In my books you'll always be a member of the greatest foursome music has ever seen; and I include those chaps from Liverpool on this list.
I love you Alan ♡
Alan is a class act. So much the gentleman!! Thanks Alan for making a special moment happen! Hopefully you will work with DM again! Man, I still get teary eye when I see those hugs and happy faces at the end =)
I love you, Mr. Alan Wilder ♡.
what i'm feeling is only fans recognize how important was alan in depeche mode not even the actual producers
We love you Alan!
Great interview. Always good to see Mr Wilder, especially in such buoyant form.
I still get goosebumps when I watch the video.... Absolutely incredible! I want more!!!!!!!!!
Hi Alan, I have seen you back in 1994 in Vienna when for a student’s job I was working as a driver for the hotel you guys were staying in, just when you arrived. Then the same evening i watched the show, which was the best I have ever seen and sadly the last tour you were part of the band. The next morning I arrived at 6 at the hotel again to start my working day. And then a colleague of mine told me that you had spent half of the night sitting in the bar and playing music on the piano. i was devastated cause I should have started at 4 in the morning but then swapped my duty with this colleague cause I wanted to enjoy your show the evening before. So I had missed the concert in the hotel bar. What a pity! All the best to you. We still miss you as the sound architect at DM!!
Best period in my life musically-when Alan was a member of Depeche Mode. Everything was just so revolutionary and innovative back then. Even if he came back for just one song it would mean so much to many of us.
Still gorgeous!
Alan, please come back!!
Come back! come back to us! We'll be waiting patiently!
Seriously! I still Love DM, even without AW, but... Come back, Alan! We miss you so much!
This brought tears in my eyes. Everything is in the past. Join DM again!
I want a reunion tour before I die PLEASE 🙏🏼😭❤️❤️
Alan, you are my synth mentor, and only you coming back to DM can bring tears in my eyes, Cheers from CHINA.
Because Alan's feels much better being his own boss, and if you look some interviews up, he says that although he enjoyed being on the road, he didn't like the fact of playing almost 2hours gigs again and again. Besides, DM is no pop band that would make such a reunion just for the fans or advertisement, unless they do it for themselves.
It is obvious their relationship is on a good level again, but I don't see them having any interest in getting back together, but who knows...
Alan W. is Depeche Mode and will always be. His work is the greatest, true artist. Thank you Depeche Mode for giving that special song with Alan again.
Now that Andy Fletcher has passed, I can't see DM continuing as a duo.
To be honest, the best thing Dave & Martin could do is ask Alan BACK. I think ALL the fans would want that, & I think Andy would be ok with it too 👍
Otherwise, just wrap DM up & enjoy the royalties & the memories.
Miss you Alan. Great to see you come together for a great cause!
My deepest respect to Alan! His contribution into DM sound might be the one thing that really made me a big DM fan. Many thanks for everything ...and please come back to DM...
The boss returned to the stage!!!
ALAN JOIN THEM AGAIN!
Alan will always be a part of Depeche Mode, hopefully they can get back together, for us, for them, for everyone really.
This was one of the single greatest happenings in Depeche history. Simply jawdropping and a fantastic experience. Even if I just saw it here on youtube. Thanks so much for doing this Alan. :)
Yeah I saw them in London. I wasn't planning to go again at the end of the year but it was so good I bought a ticket that night. I always thought Outdoors had a nice charm to it to be fair.
I think my initial post was OTT but then so is some of the constant pining for Alan. I just think there is an amazing band still going and still releasing quality albums. I've seen the Dave say how much credit Alan deserves - I just think the remaining members deserve more for carrying on so admirably.
Hey Depeche Mode!! I am a HUGE fan of yours and I was sooo happy when the Songs Of The Universe album came out! I'm soo glad you guys have made it this far as a band! I always listen to your songs at least once a day, especially the singles 86-98! I hope the familys are happy because I am! LONG LIVE DEPECHE MODE FOREVER!!!!!!
Come back Alan, we love you.
It was so great to see Alan WIlder perform with Martin...I wish I could have seen it live.
Alan, please come back only once before I die
Alan is so loved 😍😍
WHAT A LOVELY HUMAN
I was shocked to see alan at that concert! It was amazing & so great he was willing to lend a hand..he seems to be so diplomatic in interviews..alan is awesome.
Please do a reunion with Alan again when this global pandemic virus is over. You guys deserve to be reunited again 💙
Bring Alan back!
What if Alan AND Vince came back to the band for a reunion concert? I'd like to see that!!
+Skye ID Or they should form a new duo by themselves called ExDM. ;)
With the their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, perhaps you're going to get your wish!
please keep Vince home :)
Honestly, I got emotional when I saw this. I was beside myself. It was great to see Alan playing (even for one song and for one night) with Martin again and to see them (Martin and Fletch) embrace each other was great. Who knows what becomes of this if anything, but it's good to see them all reconnect. It would be even better to see them reconnect on a creative musical level. We can all hope. Cheers and forever Mode.
High class Mr. Wilder.
Best years.
2018 and still hoping they bring Alan back to work on new DM material...
Dear DEPECHE MODE❣️🌹🌹🌹
Very stunning and of course, thank YOU all very very much, You gave me my SOUNDTRACKS for my life❣️🌹🌹🌹
My best band ever❣️🌹🌹🌹
Very special thank You, Mister Alan Charles Wilder❣️🌹🌹🌹
Great musician.
What a joy see you on stage with DM after so long time. Welcome back Mr. Alan Wilder. Hope to see you soon with DM again and again!!! And don't forget to call Anton Corbijn for DM video direction/creation!!
It's not only "ingrained" in his arms, but also in his heart and soul ❤
Great to see they are still together. Superb band
Alan was always my favorite member of DM......had a massive crush on him back in the mid 80's....
Алан дорогой все ждут тебя.вернись мы все тебя просим.ты очень нужен ДМ и всем фанам.
This just feels right. Alan should re-join, that would be totally amazing and unexpected.
Wonderfull Alan Wilder 👍
As creative director for Electric Light Orchestra Pt. 2 I always secretly hoped Jeff Lynne and the boys would somehow find a way to reconnect (that dream has proven sadly impossible) so Alans reunion with Martin, Dave and Fletch was special for me beyond words . The chills I had at the Depeche show in Anaheim returned in spades as Alan took the stage with Martin and to think I was only watching it happen on UA-cam! What a treat if that magic could somehow continue. Best wishes to all. G
C'mon Mr.Wilder , Depeche Mode is not the same since you left the band, but we the fans were so glad to see you back for at least those moments
i was lucky enough (thanx to dave gahans brother peter whom i was sitting accross the isle from) to be in the vip suite after the show and meet the band inc alan & daniel miller, (unfortunately not dave) all nice approachable guys. one of the best nights of my life. thanx guys.
God Bless you Alan... thanks for making a dream come true...
