I hear many instructors and practitioners talk about “grips” being one of the most important parts of grappling. It is my belief that we are hindering our grappling by looking at it with this perspective. Furthermore, we get caught up in this idea and end up wasting energy, create various stalling scenarios and over-complicate things for ourselves.
Don’t think about the grip itself, think about gripping it terms of what you are trying to accomplish, what you’re trying to control, why you’re trying to control it and how you’re going to go about doing it. This gives you more freedom to think your way through the various hurdles you may encounter and allows for better control over your opponent for both gi, no-gi and MMA grappling.
Remember, BODY POSITION takes precedence over GRIPS or anything else for that matter. Be aware that it is your body position that makes a grip work or not.

This was a shockingly helpful video. After having spent many years focused on MMA and no-gi grappling, the gi grips of BJJ are an endless source of frustration for me. Thanks for posting this. I’d love to see more videos on this topic.
Great to hear Ramsey, thanks for the feedback.
Hey Kenny, congratulations on signing with the PFL as color commentator! I’m looking forward to hearing you during a broadcast again.
Man, I really wish you had a million subs. This content is underrated for sure.
The emphasis and reliance on "Gripping" has become absurd these days. Good to see a quality lesson and video presentation addressing it- nice job.
Congrats on landing the PFL gig Kenny, all the best.
I'm truly enjoying your conceptual approach to teaching, rather than teaching the techniques themselves!
Thanks for the summary at 4:24
Yes!!! Training no-gi should be mandatory for beginners, can't count how many times I've seen colored belts look like a fish out of water if they suddenly don't have a gi jacket to grab, grabbing cloth has become a habit and it's not even clear to them what they are trying to achieve with it.
Those are good pointers! Thank you!
These videos have some of the best explanations of concepts I have seen in any videos… Great job!
🙏
100% totally agree.
Thank you for the shared knowledge.
Osss
As a always Kenny breaks it down with effortless grace and skill. Really just a pleasure to watch and learn. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼💪🏽
As a larger grappler who often is perplexed by how crumby my passing is, this is a huge help. No secret dim mak uber grip, just proper physics. Thanks a ton for these videos!
It's amazing how good, you explain everything with all the details thank you.
Wow, who knew you were an amazing instructor as well as an accomplished fighter!
These breakdowns are phenomenal
💙 your details, Prof. Kenny. :)
I am going to ask now while the channel subscriber count is small and still growing - When is a BJJ for MMA instructional coming out?
Thanks Kenny, this is an eye opening concept for me. Something that makes so much sense when you think about it really. Saved this video for when the world opens up again.
Hope you can get back to training soon man, thanks for watching.
Another gem of a video. Wonderful stuff.
🙏👊
Thanks Josh!
And Kenny I guess...
Miss you being a commentator ken flo!!! If you can please explain why you stopped.. If not its okay and either way you're still a great analyst!!
Love it
So good
Appreciate it Greg! 👊
please make one more fight ken flo
Teaching principles over techniques. That's the best kind of teacher 👍
the most skilled fighter without a belt
KF: This is not the grip that you want.
Me: This is NOT the grip that I want. Move along.
