One little detail that I love is in the Neversoft intro for the game you’ll see a skater get dragged into a manhole by this creature and it turns out that skater IS Eric. What’s funny is that at first glance you’re like, “Poor guy” but once you play the game and see it again you’re like, “Good riddance”
I always considered THUG2 canon, I just figured that he lost all respect amongst the Pro Scene after the Hawaii footage came to light exposing him as a snake, and alot of his skill deteriorated because he had no need to keep up with his skill or improve, he had the the money and the fame and thats all he cared about. Great video though, Eric has lived rent free in my head for years.
That's a good point. I was coming at it as he must have had a good part to go pro and the Hawaii part getting back to MC wouldn't affect him too much. But after thinking about it, he definitely would be boned by the MC releasing that Hawaii part since Eric's scumminess would be brought to light. And there's not way that's no a death kneel in the skating community. Especially if he wasn't doing any interesting skating wise. I'm with you on that lol. Too caught up on the villain portrayal lol. Eric is also in Proving Ground,I felt the same way. I recently played THUG2 and Eric is laughable. Especially since it's supposed to be a direct sequel. I can't stand the wasted potential of Eric as a reoccurring villan.
Damn man, this was way more of a deeper of an analysis on Eric Sparrow's hating ass than I was expecting. Even spotlighting how Eric actually had the potential as a skater to make it out of New Jersey himself but he choose to be an absolute leech to the MC and just wanted the fame but didn't put in the work to accomplish this and even pointing out just how much of a doormat MC kinda is to even be putting up with Eric's shit until they both get to the Tampa AM. I can actually believe Eric was an actual good friend/person at some point in time when he and MC were younger but as they say 'time changes people'. Also, glad I'm not the only one who thinks a lot more time progresses within the story between chapters especially when the MC getting stuck in Russia after the tank incident and finally doing enough favors to have safe passage to return to New Jersey. This was great video on Eric's hating ass.
Im so glad that i wasnt the only one who found Eric Sparrow to be such a memorable villain. He is for real a top 10 villain in fiction for me, just because of how viscerally you as a player grow to hate him and his slimey ways. I think that his role is bolstered by the medium his story finds itself within. Being a video game, every time he screws the protagonist over, it feels like he is screwing YOU over, because you are the one who put in the work to get the MC where he deserves to be, they are YOUR accomplishments just as much as the MC.
I'm probably in the minority of American Wasteland and Probect 8 were my favorites lol also that "weird skateshop owner" was Stacy Peralta, one of the most important people in skate history

Another reason Eric is cocky is that he bet the real tape that he stole from MC and when you think about it, MC would show everyone the real tape and Eric would be exposed as a fraud! Therefore he would lose all his fame and fortune all because he wanted to prove to MC that he was better than him without thinking of the consequences.

I like how we can all look back and say this was an amazing game bc none of us actually played it back in the day, we’d just get on and free skate for two hours and avoid missions, was it a good game? I have no idea, but I’ll take your word for it. Kind of like gta vice city, literally one of the best games made, I’ll never know, I just unlocked “All Weapons” and a corvette and had fun for a few hours, that game could’ve been terrible for all I know
Eric is a PG villain at best. He was never meant to be a real threat. Everything he put you through makes you a better skater and you wind up making connections with famous skaters. He filmed the pink hotel helicopter gap and it's not entirely his fault you get left in Russia, the agent lets you down also. He even gives you the tape after you beat him in the end. There were a lot of bitchass kids like Eric Sparrow in the 2000s and they weren't villains lmao It's a good story because Eric does too many positive things to be a complete villain so you're left to make your own opinion. Im not defending him but he's not the most hated villain in video games when there are protagonists in other games that are infinitely worse.
He may not be as evil as traditional video game villains, but it’s the fact that he is supposed to be your best friend. Yet he betrays you not once, not twice, but three times throughout the story. It also helps that the game story mode is mostly grounded in reality, and while Eric isn’t the most evil in video games, he is definitely one of the most believable and that makes him hit close to home when he betrays the player.

A lot of what happens in this story is based on true stories from real pro skaters like Tony Hawk. Because of this, I connected more with the events of the game. Let me tell you, I felt more anger at Eric for stealing the Hawaii footage than I did for villains in any of the above.
In Russia Eric steals a tank and starts it up. You jump in and try to stop it but it crashes into a building, with a rock falling on the tank trapping you inside. Eric then runs off leaving you to deal with the consequences, and when you go to jail Eric lies and says you were the one who stole the tank and that he tried to stop you. This gets you kicked off the team and abandoned in Russia. Eric absolutely is the reason you got left there.
