At 17:35, the 13 yard penalty was because when you are within 30 yards of the end zone, a 15 yard penalty becomes a “half the distance to the goal line” penalty, and since they were at the 26 yard line, that would have been half the distance.
The CFL Rouge is basically the same as a touchback in the NFL, except in the CFL the kicking team gets a point: this is actually kinda interesting because it means teams have to choose between trying to return the ball out of the endzone (and getting potentially really cramped field position), or keeping it in the endzone, getting possession at the 20 yard line, but allowing a point. Anyway, the safety on a conversion attempt after a touchdown is worth 1 point because a touchdown is worth 2 on that play, and they want it to be worth less than a touchdown.
I have watched a fair bit of CFL, as I am Canadian. However, I have only heard of the "rouge" (as explained above) as being called a single. The CFL has 110 yards between end zones which are 25 yards deep, plus the field is also wider, so it's a much larger field. It encourages a more pass oriented strategy having only the 3 downs, but with more space to spread out the 12 players per side.

12:30 I have to stop you right there: the AFL's New York Titans did not move to Tennessee. They actually just changed their name to the Jets. The Tenneessee Titans are the former Houston Oilers. Also, the Chargers moved from LA to San Diego where they remain to this day. EDIT: I'm being informed the Chargers actually moved back to LA in 2017. shows how much I"ve paid attention
Also the Patriots didn't really move, they just rebranded. I guess their stadium has moved to outside the city (they used to play at Fenway Park), but only about 30-45 minutes and it's pretty common for a lot of teams to have their stadiums in outer suburbs.
In Canadian Football the end zones are 20 yards deep and the goal posts are on the goal line like in Rugby. If a kicked ball during a kickoff goes into the end zone and isn't returned, the kicking team gets one point. In the NFL it is simply classified a dead ball and comes out to the 20.
@@DNReacts anytime a scorigami happens it will also be posted on the nfl subreddit. It has become a big thing. As soon as a game ends up in a scoreagmi it is posted within seconds.
It was also because the Pats couldn't find a stadium to play in Boston because they were all under the NFL's 50,000 capacity requirement. And after getting shot down by the city in building a new stadium in downtown Boston, they opted to build one in a small town (Foxboro) that acted as the midway point between Boston and Providence, about 22 miles both ways. Hence becoming the New England Patriots, and to this day, the only team in the 4 Major Sports to be repped by an entire region instead of a city or state.

@@DNReacts 1 thing you should know or had it made abundantly clear in the Scorigami vid. It was made in 2016, so the chart should be more filled in by now & w/ the NFL season starting in 2 days it will fill up a little more. That chart is way outdated as a result.
in canadian football, a "rouge" is the rule that when you kick a ball out the back of the endzone (like a missed field goal, for instance) you score 1 point yet another of the strange minor differences in the canadian ruleset
The REAL crown jewel of scorigami is 10-1, a score so disgusting that it will never ever happen It requires not only an offensive safety on an extra point to get to 6-1, but then the team winning will have to get 2 safeties as well
Scorigami actually has its own twitter where a bot keeps track of each games score and it shows the percentage likelihood of a scorigami after each quarter
A 13 yard penalty would likely be a consequence of “half the distance to the goal” penalty which is usually reserved for unsportsmanlike conduct- such as taunting. This can be especially damaging as “half the distance” can literally be half the field.
Starting around 2020, the NFL Network (and possibly other TV networks such as ESPN or Fox) regularly reports when a scorigami happens. @12:40 Among the original AFL teams, the New York Titans became the Jets in 1963, the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee in the '90s and became the Titans, and the Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City in 1962 and became the Chiefs. The present day Houston Texans are an expansion team from 2002.
I once heard it described that a touchdown creates a little one-play mini-game, a game within a game, where a touchdown is worth 2 points (2-point conversion), a field goal 1 point (point after touchdown), and a safety 1 point (conversion safety), which I thought was a cute and approachable summary (re your question about why a conversion safety is 1 point). Enjoyed this! Jon Bois is the best
The Oakland Raiders became the Los Angeles Raiders, then became the Oakland Raiders again until just recently when they became the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chargers only spent 1 year in Los Angeles (1960) before moving to San Diego. It wasn't until 2017 that they moved back to Los Angeles.
I see the Raiders and Chargers were explained by someone, and the Patriots were explained by someone else... so, the New York Titans didn't move, they just changed their names to the Jets. The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and changed their name to the Titans. Houston was then given a new team in 2002, and they named them the Texans... the Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City in the 1960's and were renamed the Chiefs. So the only original AFL teams to not move or change names are the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills. I hope that clears it up! Lol
Priest Holmes please! I know he lost the last several polls on discord, but it has to happen! The greatest 3 year stretch any player has ever had, and it's not even close lol.
To answer the 13-yard penalty question: You are correct that most pentalties come in 5, 10, or 15 yard increments, but one odd rule is that a single penalty may not move the ball more than half of the distance to the offending team's goal line. When that happens, the ball is instead moved to the half-way point between the dead ball spot and the goal line. In the video example, the Browns player was flagged for a 15 yard penalty, but since the dead ball spot was the Browns' 26 yard line, the penalty was assessed as "half the distance to the goal," resulting in a 13 yard penalty.
I assume the reason for a safety on a PAT/2pt attempt being 1 point is, that returning the kick or interception for a TD on such a play is worth 2 points and they meant for the safety to be worth less than the return by the defense. So there is a scenario, where on a 2pt Conversion a Pick 6 happens, but that would naturally only be worth 2 points, because that's all the Offense could have scored had they converted.
@@marshalljones3341 That's not true. A block PAT can be returned for 2 points, not 1. "During a Try, the following shall apply: (a) If a kick results in a field goal by the offense, one point is awarded. (b) If a Try results in a touchdown by either team, two points are awarded. (c) If the Try results in what would ordinarily be a safety against either team, one point is awarded to the opponent."
@@DaGuys470 His correction was false. It's 2 point for the defense either way. I'm not sure it would be entirely possible for the officials to necessarily determine whether it was a PAT attempt or a 2 pt conversion attempt as teams can run fake PATs.

There's a Twitter account with 368k followers that you should follow. Also, why is it worth 1 for a safety on a conversion? Good question, but it just is. I think the logic is that a "touchdown" is only worth 2 instead of 6, and so it only makes sense that a safety would be worth less than normal too.
17:33 to answer your question, in certain situations, if the penalty yardage is more than half of the remaining yards to the goalline, the refs will make the penalty for "Half the distance to the goal". In this case, since the play ended at the 26-yard line, the penalty was for 13 yards or "Half the distance to the goal", instead of the usual 15 yards for a taunting penalty.
I was watching the Bengals-Patriots game last year, and I was yelling at the TV, not only because I'm a Bengals fan, but because we were on pace to get a scorigami for most of the game.
13 yard penalty happens when its either spotted at the point of the foul, or a "half the distance to the goal line" penalty. If it's half the distance, it makes sense that on the 25 yard line, half the distance would be either 12 or 13 yards
Just to point out a thing about team names (this is in regards to around 12:50); just because a team has the same name as an historical team, does not mean that they are the same franchise. Example 1: Tennessee Titans are actually the franchise of the Houston Oilers. They actually switched cities and then renamed because the old part of the name "oilers" did not fit Tennessee's culture (at least that's what I'm assuming). This occurred in 1997. Example 2: The New York Titans became the New York Jets - The name change happened with a change of ownership in 1963. Example 3: The Houston Texans are an expansion team that was formed in 1999 after the Houston Oilers had moved cities. I'm not sure if you guys did a reaction to the history of NFL teams or team names, but if you didn't, then it would be a good reaction to make. When I was searching to verify my own knowledge, or lack thereof, a question that was asked frequently enough so as to pop up on a google search about the team is: "when did the Oilers change their name to the Texans?" To me, that says that there are a lot of people that forget these little details, or just didn't know about them because it happened before they got into watching the sport. So, if you didn't do a reaction, doing one might be a good idea to improve your already good knowledge of the NFL. btw, I'm not trying to disparage you guys, many NFL fans forget these things as well. I enjoy your reactions, guys. I don't miss the NFL ones, and I even watch many of the other sports' reactions you do even though I don't really care for the other sports for various reasons. Keep up the good work!

Anyway all those teams are now in the NFL. The 13 yard penalty was half the distance to the goal, the graphic was a bit misleading and just rounded off to the nearest yard
The only time I care about this stuff is if I’m doing “football squares” which is a common gambling game during the Super Bowl. Essentially it’s a 10x10 grid of numbers 0-9 (rows for one team, and columns for the other)… you buy a square(s)… and then a random draw happens to set the number for each row and column. Depending on how the game ends, the person with the square the corresponds to the last digit of the score for each team wins.
@@DNReactsYeah, they were an upstart AFL team & had to compete with the firmly established Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. By 1962 they’d moved to Kansas City & became the Chiefs.

The 13-yard penalty sounds like it was a "half the distance to the goal" penalty because the standard 15-yard penalty would have moved them even closer than that.

The 13 yard penalty would've been the result of a "half the distance to the goal" qualifier. A lot of penalties, if you're close to the endzone, become half the distance instead of the normal yardage.
at this point, even some coaches know what scorigami is! (pete caroll of the seahawks, mentioned in the video as a "scorigami master," has joked in interviews that he does it intentionally [or IS he joking?? :P ])

To answer what is a 'rouge' in Canadia Football: "In the CFL, the kicking team is awarded a rouge if the team either misses a field goal or punts the football, and the receiving team does not get the ball out of their end zone. Or, a team can score a rouge if the ball goes through the end zone and out of bounds without being touched on a missed field goal or punt." Basically, their own unique safety (receiving team doesn't get out of their endzone), and there isn't an exact reason for it being called 'rouge', but the working theory is that a red signal was used when the receiving team didn't leave their endzone (because 'rouge' is French for red)
I knew a intercepted 2-point conversion returned to the opposite endzone was worth 2, but I had thought a blocked PAT returned gives the blocking/returning team 1 point. So 6-1 shouldn't be as hard as that video indicated, but I just looked it up, and sure enough any returned conversion (1- or 2-point attempt) is worth 2 for the defense. TIL
The 13-yard penalty is assessed due to the offense having the ball near the end zone. If you were on the 10 yard line and the other team commits a penalty worth 15-yards, the officials don't just move the ball into the end zone and declare a touchdown, they instead move the ball "half the distance to the goal." I assume the 13-yarder has given because the penalty took place at the 26 yard line.
I swear one of these days there's gonna be a Scorigami Lover that becomes Head Coach of an NFL team and they're gonna be shutting out their opponent and score a garbage time td near the end of the game and that head coach is gonna instruct one of his players to take the ball and run all the way back to the other end zone and out the back of it on the point after attempt just to give the other team 1 point to make a scorigami and that's gonna be a glorious day
The Houston Oilers moved toved Tennessee and became the Titans Dallas Texans moved to Kanas City and became the Chiefs the New York Titans became the Jets
Interestingly Scorigami became a broadcast term purely because of this video, NBC, ABC and ESPN talking heads now note Scorigami, particularly on the NFL network.
So I noticed you were analyzing the AFL founding teams to see if they were still where they started. Here's how it goes: The Houston Oilers were in Houston all the way until 1995. Then they moved to Tennessee and became the Titans a few years later. The New York Titans almost immediately became the New York Jets. The Boston Patriots are equivalent to the New England Patriots as they play in roughly the same area, though I'm sure you probably already knew that. The LA Chargers spent one year in LA before moving to San Diego, where they stayed all the way until 2016 before finally moving back to LA. The Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs. The Oakland Raiders moved to LA in the 80's, then back to Oakland in the mid-90's, and then to Vegas in 2020. Broncos and Bills have never moved.
13 yard penalty. Originally a15 yard penalty. But is automatically changed to half the distance to the goal line because they were on the 25 yard line. Whenever a penalty is enforced it cannot be more than half the distance to the goal either forward or backwards
The reason the conversation safety is only worth 1 is because let’s say the ball is intercepted during a 2pt conversion and the intercepter runs it to the other end zone, that’s only with 2 points because it was a conversion so the safety can’t be worth the same as the touchdown
The reasoning for 1 point is because the max a team can score on an extra point try is 2 points on a TD (either way). So they didn't want to value a safety as much as a TD in that case, but they didn't want to make it 0. Only 1 number left.
17:31 - If the penalty yardage would put you in the endzone, The rule is that you only get half the distance the to goal. I would personally put the ball on the 1 yard line.
A rouge in the CFL is when a receiving team from a missed field goal attempt or a punt get pinned in their own end zone. Thinking about it, I recall a wild finish to a tie game where both teams were kicking the ball at each other trying to avoid/attempt the rouge. Looked like Rugby. Maybe someone can recall the exact game.
We get new scorigami every year. Last year there were 3 new ones. Only reason i learned it was from NFL Redzone channel, which you should watch sometime if you have it available in your area and if it doesn't cost you extra. If you havent heard nfl redzone shows every touchdown while the games are going on. So theres around 6-9 games going on any sunday at 1pm EST and 3-5 at 4pm EST. They will flip from game to game showing you big plays and all touchdowns and no commercial breaks.
A rouge is a Canadian football rule where a team is awarded a point if they tackle the ball carrier in the endzone. In the NFL, it would just be a touchback.
It was a 13 yard penalty because they were on the 25 yard line. It is half the distance to the goal if a, normally, 15 yard penalty happens within the 30 yardline.
We’d never say never. We’re navigating so many new sports at the moment, but if we could ever go full time, and create content, I would love to learn all sports worldwide. Would be incredible.
The New York Titans are actually the Jets and the Houston Oilers are the Tennessee Titans and they will be wearing their Oilers throwback uniforms this year. Very vconfusing yet interesting lol
I believe the 1 pt rouge in Canadian football is if a kick misses the goalposts but goes out the back of the end zone? The kicking team gets one point.
Yeah this definitely classes as part of it! There’s been so many comments to clear this up too. About if the team defending collects but doesn’t leave the end zone too
17:39 penalties can only move the ball up to half the distance to the goal. So if the ball was on the 25, a fifteenth yard penalty is too long so they go half which is about 12.
No, The New York Titans became trhe New York Jest. The Houston Oilers move to Tennennesse and renamed themselves the Titans. The Chargers moved to San Deigo and now reside back in Los Angeles. The Dallas Texan are the kansas City Chiefs.
12:16 - Not quite. The Oilers moved to Tennessee to become the Tennessee Titans. The New York Titans moved from the Polo Grounds in Manhattan to Shea Stadium in Queens under the air traffic pattern of nearby LaGuardia Airport and changed their name to the Jets. The Patriots moved from downtown Boston to not-so-nearby-but-still-in-Massachusetts Foxboro and changed their name to the New England Patriots. The LA Chargers moved to San Diego and then recently back to LA. The Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City and changed their name to the Chiefs (the Cowboys were an NFL expansion team that formed at the same time as the AFL and the Texans; the Houston Texans were a 2002 expansion team). The Raiders moved from Oakland to LA, BACK to Oakland, and recently to Las Vegas. The Broncos and the Bills are the only 2 of those original AFL clubs to be more-or-less where they started (the Bills moved out of Buffalo proper to a suburb but one MUCH closer than the Patriots did and obviously didn't change names).

Scoragami has become pretty mainstream amongst NFL media since this video came out. There are twitter accounts dedicated to it
I’ll have to check them out! Thanks for the heads up!

The Boston Patriots are still in the same general area, but they changed their name to New England to represent the larger area which includes Boston.
Thanks for the info!
@@b1galbos89 You could make an argument for the Golden State Warriors to rep California or at least NorCal.
@@JoeVideoed Golden State is the nickname for California. That's not a region. Also, the Warriors play in San Francisco, which is in the middle of California's west coast.
@@b1galbos89 What about the Carolina Panthers? That's two states, so technically it doesn't represent A state. Also, to get nitpicky, Tampa Bay is not the name of the major city (Tampa), but represents all of the communities in the Tampa Bay area. So you could put the Bucs and the rays in there too.
Wow, the effort that goes in to making a video like this is unfathomable. The research, the editing, graphics, mathematical computations etc.. must have taken a herculean effort. My congratulations to Jon Bois for this outstanding video. Thanks guys, I think you underestimate how much we all enjoy experiencing these videos with you. in canadian football, a "rouge" is the rule that when you kick a ball out the back of the endzone (like a missed field goal, for instance) you score 1 point
yet another of the strange minor differences in the canadian ruleset

Disgusting
Also, the end zone in Canadian football is 20 yrs deep as opposed to 10 in American football.
I always thought the kicking team on an after-touchdown kickoff got a point if they kicked it thru the goalpost uprights. Or did they change it?
As a browns fan that game that rudd threw his helmet to lose, it still BOILS MY BLOOD WHY DO THAT! FOOL!

In just week 1 of this season, we've already had a scorigami (25-9)
2 scorigamis this week:
Dolphins 70 Broncos 20
Eagles 25 Bucs 11
the the dolphins 70 to broncos 20 was a new scorigami yesterday
The REAL crown jewel of scorigami is 10-1, a score so disgusting that it will never ever happen
It requires not only an offensive safety on an extra point to get to 6-1, but then the team winning will have to get 2 safeties as well
Scorigami actually has its own twitter where a bot keeps track of each games score and it shows the percentage likelihood of a scorigami after each quarter
A 13 yard penalty would likely be a consequence of “half the distance to the goal” penalty which is usually reserved for unsportsmanlike conduct- such as taunting. This can be especially damaging as “half the distance” can literally be half the field.
quick note, boys. Boston is in New England. they just moved to a stadium outside the city, but their fanbase hasn't changed.
Thank you for letting us know, appreciate it
Starting around 2020, the NFL Network (and possibly other TV networks such as ESPN or Fox) regularly reports when a scorigami happens.
Love the info, thank you for providing this 🙏
I see the Raiders and Chargers were explained by someone, and the Patriots were explained by someone else... so, the New York Titans didn't move, they just changed their names to the Jets.

This is perfect, appreciate the breakdown, thank you 🙏
I assume the reason for a safety on a PAT/2pt attempt being 1 point is, that returning the kick or interception for a TD on such a play is worth 2 points and they meant for the safety to be worth less than the return by the defense.
So there is a scenario, where on a 2pt Conversion a Pick 6 happens, but that would naturally only be worth 2 points, because that's all the Offense could have scored had they converted.
Oh wow, okay!! Was not aware of this, thank you for this context 🙏
If a PAT is blocked and caught in the air it can be returned for 1 point.
@@marshalljones3341 Thanks for the correction, so 1 point for PAT, 2 for 2pt conversion, just as the offense.

Appreciate the confirmation, thank you for letting us know. Makes complete sense 🙏
Y’all gotta react to the 222-0 game
I think we do!!
Thank you for letting us know, makes perfect sense, appreciate it 🙏
Just to point out a thing about team names (this is in regards to around 12:50); just because a team has the same name as an historical team, does not mean that they are the same franchise.

About those AFL teams: the New York Titans are now the New York Jets, the Houston Oilers are now the Tennessee Titans, and the Dallas Texans are now the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 13 yard penalty would've been the result of a "half the distance to the goal" qualifier. A lot of penalties, if you're close to the endzone, become half the distance instead of the normal yardage.
This does make sense, thank you for letting us know 🙏
at this point, even some coaches know what scorigami is!

Or, a team can score a rouge if the ball goes through the end zone and out of bounds without being touched on a missed field goal or punt."
Basically, their own unique safety (receiving team doesn't get out of their endzone), and there isn't an exact reason for it being called 'rouge', but the working theory is that a red signal was used when the receiving team didn't leave their endzone (because 'rouge' is French for red)
Ah okay, didn’t envisage this, thank you for the information, appreciate it, interesting read 🙏
TIL
There is a twitter account that covers it very well.
Thank you for this, gonna drop it a follow 👍
Yall should check out that 222-0 game video... Its a masterpiece and will have deep college football history
Appreciate the suggestion, thank you 🙏 Had quite a few for this one
It was a 'half the distance to the goal' penalty, which can be a very odd number of yards.
Jon Bois the greatest sportswriter of our generation

I swear one of these days there's gonna be a Scorigami Lover that becomes Head Coach of an NFL team and they're gonna be shutting out their opponent and score a garbage time td near the end of the game and that head coach is gonna instruct one of his players to take the ball and run all the way back to the other end zone and out the back of it on the point after attempt just to give the other team 1 point to make a scorigami and that's gonna be a glorious day

Many many people keep baseball score cards for games, when you log every itch.
Interestingly Scorigami became a broadcast term purely because of this video, NBC, ABC and ESPN talking heads now note Scorigami, particularly on the NFL network.
So I noticed you were analyzing the AFL founding teams to see if they were still where they started. Here's how it goes:
The Houston Oilers were in Houston all the way until 1995.
Hell yes, more Jon Bois!
You know the vibes 🙏🏼
More chart party in general would be amazing
The reasoning for 1 point is because the max a team can score on an extra point try is 2 points on a TD (either way). So they didn't want to value a safety as much as a TD in that case, but they didn't want to make it 0. Only 1 number left.
17:31 - If the penalty yardage would put you in the endzone, The rule is that you only get half the distance the to goal. I would personally put the ball on the 1 yard line.
Gotcha, thank you for this, really appreciate it! 🙏
Appreciate the confirmation, thank you 🙏
Alot of times announcers even notice it, they call out a scoreogami mid game

We get new scorigami every year. Last year there were 3 new ones. Only reason i learned it was from NFL Redzone channel, which you should watch sometime if you have it available in your area and if it doesn't cost you extra.
If you havent heard nfl redzone shows every touchdown while the games are going on. So theres around 6-9 games going on any sunday at 1pm EST and 3-5 at 4pm EST. They will flip from game to game showing you big plays and all touchdowns and no commercial breaks.
I’ve watched redzone before! It’s a great show and will definitely be seeing more of it this season!
@@DNReacts oh ya RedZone is my way I watch games
A rouge is a Canadian football rule where a team is awarded a point if they tackle the ball carrier in the endzone. In the NFL, it would just be a touchback.
Thank you for the info and confirmation Dave, this is great!
Lol, we were an act of sportsmanship away from another 73 point game.
I’m pretty sure the 13 yard penalty was because it was half the distance to the goal penalty. Something to do with yards from the goal
It was a 13 yard penalty because they were on the 25 yard line. It is half the distance to the goal if a, normally, 15 yard penalty happens within the 30 yardline.
Thank you for letting us know, we really appreciate it 🙏
The Dallas Texans are now the Kansas City Chiefs, actually. The Houston Texans were a 2002 expansion team that replaced the Oilers.
I think the reason a team wins 2-0 if the other team forfeits, it is considered a safety.
You guys should seriously get into CFL! This season has been super eventful so far as well so it’s the best time to get into it!

The New York Titans are actually the Jets and the Houston Oilers are the Tennessee Titans and they will be wearing their Oilers throwback uniforms this year. Very vconfusing yet interesting lol
The Rouge was basically a special teams safety. So punt or kick if you didn’t get it out of the end zone
It's the lowest possible score one can have in a win.
Damo can't say Darren McCarty so he SURE ain't gettin' scorigami. 🤣🤣🤣
